I can't understand Italian so objectively I have no idea how well you are speaking, but reading through the comments people seem pretty impressed, and you certainly look and sounds like you are speaking pretty well. The fact that you did this only through listening is a very valuable lesson for anyone wanting to learn a language!

Olly I'm really impressed with your first 5 days. I'm SO jealous, however, I appreciate your BRAVERY and consistency. Unreal. You've given me the courage to go forward. I guess the only way for me is to get into the 'deep end'. All the text books, grammar and comprehension can only do so much....bravo!

Way to go, Olly! It was fascinating watching you from Monday through to Friday, starting off so shy and nervous, searching for words, watching your confidence grow each day and finally relaxing enough to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing this process , full of very unique insights for all of us.

I have no words Olly. I, and my Italian husband, are so impressed with the excellent pronunciation, inflection and your ability to find the appropriate words to express sometimes quite complex ideas. I really admire your dedication, hard work and I think probably a natural predisposition to learning languages. You've encouraged me in my French studies and I'm looking forward to putting myself through this quite scary oral test, either with a French speaker or in France next time we go I need a dose of your courage Olly. Well done.

That was wonderful I could understand everything you sent and Italian. Good job! You should make another video after you finish the next two months speaking it I want to see what that’s going to be like. That’s awesome. Now everybody knows that they can listen to material and learn a language without even opening their mouth for picking up a textbook. That’s wonderful I am so proud of you!

Very impressive Olly! I’m kind of learning the opposite way around to yourself, I began learning Italian almost 20 years ago and use it whenever I can. My level is a b2 so I understood everything you said and if this is after a month that’s incredible. It took me over a year to get to that level. I’m learning Spanish at the moment so I could understand when you were trying to translate through Spanish with the word”nunca” I’m reading your short stories in Spanish book and the progress I’ve made with it is unbelievable! Resources are way better these days than when I learned Italian! Complimenti Ben fatto!

Olly, congratulations on your hard work. My mother tongue is Hungarian, but I also learnt some Italian at the secondary grammar school; however, I'm not so proud of myself as I don't really remember anything if I have to recall my Italian studies... As far as the video is concerned, I can only understand the English part and some of the Italian words. You must have put a real effort into Italian, and your new way of learning (I mean acquiring new pieces of information with the help of comprehensible input) is pretty effective and meaningful as it teaches the learner to think in the target language. In the video, you seem to be confident, fluent, well-balanced and "organised" (if I can use this word here). Thanks for sharing this wonderful expreience with us, I do really think that it will inspire many of us to follow your footsteps concerning language learning. I wish you good luck with your further studies and life. :)

I loved the video Ollie and you did great. From one language learner to another, however, when you don't know how to say something try describing what you want to say in your target language so you don't revert back to the languages you already know. Even if you don't use "correct" grammar when describing it's okay because you're training your brain to be accustomed to speaking your target language. Keep up the good work!

I have been studying Italian on and off for more years than I wish to admit (EDIT: this sounded like a brag. I meant to say how frustratingly close I get to speaking well but then give up because my verbal comprehension is terrible. More podcasts and less books for me). The single thing you show here is what I am trying to teach my son, just speak and try to express yourself. Mistakes are shortcuts to learning. I am blown away that you got to this stage in 5 weeks.

For a native English speaker Olly, after just 5 weeks you speak way better than other Romance language speakers that have lived here in Italy for years. That completely debunks the myth that people learn better when they are in the country. Bravo man! Complimenti! dai continua con l'italiano tanto se già parli spagnolo dovrebbe essere facile!

Wow!!! You speak Italian so good! I have been studying it for maybe a year, not so intense as you do but with input method only as well. Italian was my second learnt language after English. For now I don't learn it I don,t even know for what reason.. I guess that's intermediate plateau or maybe that long term process got me weary.. I am very motivated by your results, thanks a lot for this video!!! I want to go on learning this beautuful language) Maybe you can talk more widely about getting over that damn plateau? Would be really very interesting and useful! Thanks again for your great example)

In answer to your question Olly, regarding my French , what I'd like to do is read more. As you advise, choosing well what the student is interested in. I've just received L'étranger as we did it for A level ( yonks ago). I think I should be able to follow it and if I don't I'll dumb down. Also, listening. I avoid it because I get discouraged but as you say, short and sweet is the answer. I'll look for French podcasts, news, stories, etc. Any links you have are welcome. I don't have he chance to speak French but have long conversations with myself in my head. Hilarious but true . Thanks for the encouragement your example has given me Olly. Barbara

I know this is an old video and youve made many like this, but I'd love it if we could actually understand what you're saying. Im sorry if this request is insensitive to speakers of other languages, i assure you, i mean well. Maybe its just the novice language learner in me feeling frustrated that my pace is a lot slower after a month or so. But based on this video alone, you sound confident with some hiccups at times but its amazing what youre doing. Definitely an inspiration. Maybe thats the point of the video, its supposed to motivate me enough so that i try my best to ramp up my level of fluency. Anyway, i have to say, this is great, olly, and ill keep on grinding 👍

Most important was your attitude - you accepted that you were making mistakes, that mistakes were a part of the process. You took the time to think things out. You stopped to take notes. At one point you took the initiative. In your other material you make many good suggestions but it was very enabling for me to see you "struggle". Many times on KZfaq I see videos of language learners that blow me away with their fluency. I struggle with speaking and it was refreshing to watch you in this video. It was a good model for me. Thanks for posting.

Fantastico Olly, seems like you're doing a great job, the input-based method can really become a "revolution" :) Anyway, I'll write my comment about your conversations in italian: Personalmente, da madrelingua italiano, sono rimasto molto colpito dalla tua accuratezza nella pronuncia e dalla ricchezza del vocabolario, specie per quanto riguardo l'uso dei connettivi. Per quanto riguarda l'accento, sentendoti parlare sembra che tu sia un madrelingua spagnolo, piuttosto che inglese! :D

I speak Spanish and some French, no Italian, and I thought you did a great job. Of course you're going to fall back on Spanish when you don't know a word in Italian, because you'll have a good chance that the Italian speaker will understand what you're trying to say. Being understood and understanding is what's most importance, not perfection.
