Thanks for this! I got a couple yesterday. I had researched beforehand ofc but this helped a lot, especially with their diet. Im an aquarist so I have plenty of magnolia. And Im from Florida! Same here with us, I barely need heaters. However, being from Florida causes issues with TOO MUCH humidity. Ive also heard of crushing up eggshells for calcium. Is that a good idea? Also, with morning wood, is there a difference in the morning wood with a pleco on it compared to the one with isopods on it? CuzI have a shit ton of morning wood for my plecos but idk if its the same.
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 7 ай бұрын
So the pleco one has about 42% more crude fiber, and 3% more ash and ash isnt great. So while you can use it temporarily, I'd switch eventually but truth be told treat it like a supplement, not a end all be all. You CAN crush up egg shells, or cuttle bone just leave it in the cage and theyll munch on it! And you are quite welcome!

Hi thanks for the informative video! I’m looking in to buying ivory millipedes and wanted to ensure I was adequately prepared. I have a few questions though, one is what is the name of the soil you used specifically? I couldn’t quite catch it in the video when it was mentioned. And also, is it okay to use a 10 gallon glass tank to keep them in? I have an old fish tank and wanted their set up to look nice (im not using it for breeding) but wasn’t sure how this would effect ventilation. I have a cover for the top with a bunch of holes in it but I was going to block off some of the holes with duck tape so that it would help keep the humidity nice. I am from Florida so I shouldn’t have too many issues with humidity but I wanted to ask your opinion on it anyways. Thanks!

So the biggest issue youll honestly have with a ten gallon glass tank, is youll need to mist it constantly because while the humidity will be solid, you might run into issues with it not having water for them to drink. You can supplement with veggies like zucchini and cucumbers though, but I will be honest I typically like a bit more cross ventilation but give it a try and if its drying out too bad? Switch to a see through plastic bin.

I have 2 males and 4 females living together, at least 1 male and 1 female mated recently. Anyone knows what ivory millipede eggs look like so know their eggs if I find any later on? I tried looking it up but couldn't find any pictures of them.
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 6 ай бұрын
So I've had numerous generations of them and I STILL to this day have never seen the eggs themselves. They seem to bury them pretty deep.

My house is typically 72 is that too cold for them and is a heat pad needed ?
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 4 ай бұрын
Nah 72 is fine - especially if captive bred. Could more heat help? Sure but its honestly not worth the hassle. They spend a LOT of time in the wild beneath the soil.

Do you know how to house a blue Philippine millioede?? Is it the same?
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 4 ай бұрын
So unfortunately I dont have a ton of experience with the Acladocricus genus, however most millipedes will do okay if you have one dry side and one wet side, and of course ensure their substrate is chalk full of woods, leaves and items that can break down while offering them veggies.

Is it normal to not see them for days? I have 1, she loves the surface. I then bought 2 more, but I never see the 2 new ones...
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods Жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. So they will often go down for long periods of time (often times to molt, or self regulate in some capacity) then come back up. The other issue is OFTEN times these are wild caught since they are everywhere in Florida, so you could also have females going down deep to lay eggs. Give them time, especially after shipping and they will inevitably come back up and sleep some more on the surface 🤣

Can you also link the materials that you use?
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 4 ай бұрын
I could link them, but the issue with that is it highly depends on regionality (IE: Europe, Asia, etc) on if available for delivery with those links. What state/country are you from, I can send you links for specificity - or can send Amazon links but itll be VERY pricey.

Could you keep these millipedes in the same tank as isopods? :0 i wanna know ur thoughts abt it!
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods Жыл бұрын
I LOVE this question and just remember you ASKED me my opinions on this 🤣. My answer is this: Don't do it. IF you want both species to survive, most importantly the millipedes. First, Millipedes need to molt and are VERY VERY weak and susceptible to stress during molting, and in that weakened state isopods are opportunistic omnivores. Want to see the most morbid shit of your life? Put a frozen thawed pinkie mouse thats gone bad for your snake in with more than 20 isopods and they will be eaten in a day or two MAX. Which means your millipede is a potential snack and EVEN if the isopod would die snacking on them, being poisonous does you zero good if you still got eaten a LITTLE bit before the thing dies. Secondly, millipedes are prone to stress dying. Theyre a very simple creature and if conditions arent perfect? They'll just die. Third and final: they are both detritivores, which means they will forever be in consistent battle and competition for food. So IN CONCLUSION: can you do it? Yes. But we were all so preoccupied asking if we could, that we never thought to ask if we should. I hope this helps!
@taranchies1505
@taranchies1505 Жыл бұрын
@@juicesarthropods Thanks for this answer, the pinkie mouse example is interesting. I have my isopods with my headlight roaches. They both seem to breed well alongside each other but when an old male headlight died the isopods consumed the body quick! Which is creepy but also quite handy they took care of the body so I didn't have to.
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods Жыл бұрын
@@taranchies1505 Yeah they can eat living creatures quickly but roaches while alive are pretty strong so theyll just wait for them to die, then devour them. In an ideal world, you wont have issues but a recently molted roach or millipede, you can run into issues

Is it possible that my milipede can have babies without a mate in their tank. I haven't sexed mine yet, I got them the other night. They where in a group with other milipedes when I bought them. So I'm unsure if I should prepare to be a father.
@juicesarthropods
@juicesarthropods 4 ай бұрын
If the previous tank had a mate among them, then yes - they get down to business very quickly and she can hold her eggs for a minute. So if there were say 3 or more millipedes, chances are either 33% female or 66% female for egg laying depending
