Omg yes these guys are so picky. They're not the only species I've had that issue with though. P. spurca has very similar behavior when it comes to eating, they just sit in one spot and wait for food to come to them. I've had success feeding species like that the grubs of dermestid beetles while they're young since you can handle them a lot easier than fruit flies plus they're free and multiply like crazy if you're already keeping crickets or roaches. It does suck how short mantid lifespan is, they're still my favorite animals to keep though.

I just got my first female regal. Shes instar 7, so tiny still. Im so worried about keeping it humid because like you said, my area isnt one of the humid ones and I've no idea how to make it humid besides the misting.
@juicesarthropods16 күн бұрын
Itll be okay! 1. Add sphagnum moss to the enclosure, and soak that. Once shes big enough to see "hairs" though, a fine fine mist will work as long as the water droplets arent as big as her or bigger! You can buy a fine mister at most dollar stores. Youll need to mist either way for water but the sphagnum moss trick will increase humidity for sure (living moss works better but whatever is readily available to you)

@juicesarthropods26 күн бұрын
Its quite unfortunate that humans are doing a LOT of the heavy lifting in the belief in mantid intelligence, because theyre VERY dumb. 😄🤣. Humans trust human-like faces, and these guys evolved such similar faces, necks and eyes (sort of) to us that it hijacks our brains into believing theyre smart. Front facing eyes, gets us every time. 🤣

This is a great video, keep it up! I happen to have this exact yellow, purple clawed vampire crabs! I have 9 of them in a big paludarium and one lonely red devil crab waiting for his new home terrarium. I have them since a month and they are awesome. They love chilling in the waterfall and eat eat, eat! The females hide more than males but i see them from time to time. I give them isopod and gecko foods since i have both and they love the variety of meals. They jump at "crab cuisine" though, and it's fun to watch them munch on it. These animals are very easy to care for so far, they are funny, cute, and curious about their environment. Really fun creatures!

They cant really get depressed (biologically they dont have a limbic system) however the argument could be made that too much space makes them more afraid from predators. I feel anything larger than say a 12x12x12 enclosure is utterly wasted on them

This was actually a really good video, set up very well, explained in a very well to understand casual way and helped me a lot. I am considering getting one of these millipedes. I’ve raised 5 different species of giant millipede before in short periods of time, two years or so being the longest. But my current financial and living situation, this would be my best pet. Always having gravitated towards and understanding invertebrates, I keep coming back to insects. Thank you!
@juicesarthropods2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! These are some of my favorite millipedes, just in terms of how easy it is to care for them, how chill and how often theyre on the surface, and general demeanor. Highly recommend!
@calloffreedom20502 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info, greetings from Belgium! Dind know about the cocopeat could cause problems, but perhaps that's why my milipedes die withouwd me knowing what the cause is. Transferred in cocopeat free setup. There is actually a lot of misinformation surrounding use of cocpeat with milipedes, one says it okay the other not. But why not reptisoil? Last time I looked, reptisoil was made from peat moss, soil, sand and carbon, so you can tell why reptisoil is not good and which ingredient of the mix is bad. I don't use reptisoil but I do use a variation of it, jungle bedding from lucky reptile, which would only have soil and sand in the mix. And what is safe as soil then, is peat good for them ?
@juicesarthropods2 ай бұрын
The reason reptisoil isnt great is because its literally 90% peat moss, some carbon, and sand. And like $20 or sometimes more. Itd be cheaper to just BUY a brick of peat moss. But peat moss by itself has no caloric value to the millipede, so you could use reptisoil but youll need to add rotting woods and leaves to it (sanitized of course).

I went too, both days. I'm in Reno, and we stayed at my sister in law's house, who lives in Arden Arcade. So I was only 5 to 6 mins away. On Saturday poor Emily from snake discovery stayed until 8 pm to meet all the people in line, which was halfway through the parking lot most of the day, and the expo closed at 5. Then she was there at 930 the next day too for fans. I was looking for you, wondering if you'd have a booth, since its such a big show.

She stayed late Saturday too - was so cool to see how cool she was with the fans (but that line was too insane to stand in for me haha). I was not at that show BUT I am HOPING to do it next year. Sacramento is about 2 hours away from me, so its kind of a logistical nightmare where its not close enough to just take multiple trips without it being 4 hours there and back, and the tables are VERY expensive so it was a question of "worth the cost?' decided to double down on my secret project and then show up next year with a TON of stuff!

Do you know how to house a blue Philippine millioede?? Is it the same?
@juicesarthropods2 ай бұрын
So unfortunately I dont have a ton of experience with the Acladocricus genus, however most millipedes will do okay if you have one dry side and one wet side, and of course ensure their substrate is chalk full of woods, leaves and items that can break down while offering them veggies.
@ariframli13432 ай бұрын
Hong long will the food in the substrate last? Do we need to change it ?
@juicesarthropods2 ай бұрын
You wont need to change the substrate, just add occasional foods like butternut squash (organic) and add in occasionally rotting wood or broken down pellets again and you'll be fine. Make sure also to add springtails to whatever youre adding to lower mold in the enclosure - it fruiting is good but it can get in the way and consume some of the food,, so best to keep it down
