Having come ashore and secured the southern airfield on Iwo Jima, focus turns to the extinct volcano on the south west of the island. Japanese guns on Mt Suribachi continue to fire on the landing beach, disrupting men, equipment and supplies coming ashore. With the Japanese dug in in trenches, bunkers and tunnels, the raising of the US flag atop Mt Suribachi will be hard fought.

@@abomariah403 Don't confuse inflicting casualties with a 'strategic' victory. The USN was there to secure an island with two airstrips in close proximity to the Japanese mainland with the eventual idea being facilitation of bombing / the invasion of Japan itself. You're delusional if you think this was somehow a defeat for the USN given all of their objectives were accomplished.

My neighbor was a flame thrower operator on Iwo Jima. I’d have to ask my father who talked to him about 10 years ago about further details but when he landed but he went through about 4-6 other marines who carried the tank while he had the flamethrower. He refused to get to know any of the replacements knowing they would just die. After weeks of fighting it was only him and a captain of his unit who were the only original landing men and the replacement officers assumed he hadn’t been there long so his wounds from the flamethrower and days of continual combat were overlooked. To the captain’s amazement he was still alive (both assumed each other dead) but he was almost completely blind by that point from the heat, wounds, and infection of his face. His captain forced him to leave on a medical ship and said to him “Gene you’re done”. He was sent with a soldier who could no longer walk so he carried the man on his back while the other guy directed him. He learned years later that the captain died the next day after he was sent for the hospital ship. Mr. Gene is still alive but he can no longer remember anything or anyone.

What I always appreciate, as a veteran of war myself, is how these videos tastefully and accurately reflect just how brutal these battles really were in a way that most history documentaries either gloss over, or fail to convey in a meaningful and tangible way. It also treats both sides with the due respect of fighting men rather than inserting biases and opinions. Better content than anything you'll find on TV or streaming services, and we get it for free. Thanks for what you do, I'm sure a LOT of school teachers especially appreciate your work.

@@abomariah403 Your opinion in other threads seems very inconsistent. Seems like your statement isn't really that logical. If the Japanese kept the island that would be a strategic victory for Japan. If they didn't lose the whole garrison and could continue naval operations in the Pacific from another island that would be a Pyricc victory. But Japan lost the whole island and from it bombers could target all of Japan unhindered by anything but their homeland defences. For the U.S this is a complete victory and even though the cost was higher than normal everything that was lost despite any tragedy could easily be replaced. The U.S was military production god and you could see it from every shipyard and factory converted for war production. Japan losing anything was a bigger blow than anything that could be inflicted on the U.S.

@@abomariah403 it did strike a morale blow against the Japanese, because they considered the island to be part of mainland Japan, so their own soil had been taken. it also provided the US with runways from which to attack the main islands of Japan. @carltonace1606
@carltonace1606 Жыл бұрын
Not only because it was believed to be most defended. The biggest reason to have Surabachi fall quickly is because it has a commanding view of the landing beach. As long as the Japanese hold it, they can fire down on everything that comes on the island. So the mountain has extreme tactical significance. There is no way to know that the defenders on the mountain would soon be unable to continue harassing the landing zone due to ammo depletion.
@values26
@values26 Жыл бұрын
@@carltonace1606 You are also correct. You should check out the book "tomb called iwo jima". It talks about the japanese survivors and kurayabashi perspective. In one interesting report, alot of the japanese soliders who survived surabchi said they had no idea if their bullets even connected during the first day due to the debri of their artillery shells...Plus the hills in the north and the quarry in the east was where most of the artillery and mortars came from. Alot of Surbachi's artillery units were destroyed during pre naval bombardment. Another transcript from kurayabashi, was that he actually shot a flare and the iwo jima generals blue horns to signal collective firing due to many defenses' communication lines were destroyed from the pre naval bombardment. Which meant not all of the defenses fire power was released within the first hrs and in some cases days...which reduced the american casulry rate...and explained why surbachi shocking fell 5 days prior tp expectation from the japanese persepective...yes they were running low on ammunition but their a many defenses not firing due to the lack of communication..which could really give surabachi another day......Their was a story in book which reports a japanese unit on the opposite base slope of surabachi had no clue the battle started until noon of the first day when they saw the American units reached the opposite shore of the landing zones. They assumed the explosions and firing were prenaval bombardment....interesting

It always amazes me that these battles are so well documented that you can reasonably put the locations of individual soldiers on the map. There's sure to be some guesswork still - some bits the guy writing down the main report didn't see directly, other accounts differing slightly and whatnot, but it's still most impressive. It's also kinda a nice touch that when it zooms out far enough, the Japanese and American flag markers where people died become kinda hard to distinguish from one another - it becomes just marbled red and white dot indicating the position where someone died horribly (or was horribly maimed). Completely accidental, I'm sure - if I were watching it on a big 4k panel I'd probably be able to tell the difference, but it seems almost poetic that things get blurred like that when the map zooms out.

There they battled up Iwo Jima hill Two hundred and fifty men But only twenty-seven lived To walk back down again And when the fight was over And Old Glory raised Among the men who held it high Was the Indian, Ira Hayes Call him drunken Ira Hayes He won't answer anymore Not the whiskey drinking Indian Or the marine that went to war

The work. that you put into these is epic and I can not wait for each instalment and new video. Part of me can not help but respect the lives lost in the conflict especially when you make it so personel.

I can’t imagine what hand to hand combat must have been. I’m sure every man who charged up that mountain must have been terrified. Just the thought of slicing and stabbing another human being just to survive is overwhelming.

This is incredibly well produced. You and the entire team did a phenomenal job. I hope that history teachers use your content as a way to visualize certain lessons taught in those classes pertaining to whatever battles they cover. These are so well done with no bias, and full focus on the events and tying them all together cohesively. Thank you guys so much for this content. I can't wait for the rest of these, and the Bulge series too. As well as whatever is to come afterwards!

It was a rather surprising detail. I imagined he was going to say he engaged the Japanese with his trenching tool, not that it's much longer. Going in with a knife is insane. Of course, it's an aspect of leading from the front. No wonder the Japanese thought our marines must have come from the asylums and conscripted from the most dangerous prisoners! Incredibly brave men.

This is something I wanted to say in part 1, but I had no idea shermans had phones directly on the tank so infantry could talk to the crew without the commander needing to expose himself. That is a brilliant and I wonder if Abrams still do that in the event that comms are down, or if supporting infantry would find it faster to just use the phone instead of switching to the proper radio channel.

My great grandmother (also my step-mom's grandmother) was dating this guy for a while and he had a brother who served on the Saratoga at Iwo Jima when it was struck by one of the plane during the kamikaze attack. His brother was a radio operator and went to get breakfast just as the plane struck moments after which he survived.

The banzai charge which General Kuribayashi forbid was done without his knowledge. If the officers holding Mount Suribachi tried to hold out, they would have lasted for a few more days. The General also allowed his men to retreat and reposition themselves.
