With Mt Suribachi now secured, men, supply and materiel can come ashore in relative safety. But the hard fighting of the Battle of Iwo Jima is just beginning. The US Marines must now fight over the tactically difficult terrain to destroy Lt General Kuribayashi's main defensive line. Most of the now famous flag raisers will not survive.

It still amazes me to think of the landscape of so many of these battles. Sulphur literally coming through the ground when you're on an island in the Pacific with 10s of thousands of people fighting. The jungles and volcanoes in New Guinea. The bitter cold and slog of the eastern front. The high speed and hot mechanized movement through North Africa. The winter war in endless snow. Hedgerows and farms of France. Truly was a world war and that's not even including the endless Naval and air engagements

Yellowstone is waking up. Underground North Korean nuclear tests doubled the amount of earthquakes above magnitude 6 in Mexico and Alaska. Yellowstone is in the middle and showing all the bad signs. Under normal circumstances I would think it would be a small eruption like St Helens, and the big one would happen in 40K years. But nuclear blasts are about the right amount of energy to break a structure and make it go loose. If that happens, youhave a 40 km crater exploding. I would imagine it like Rogue One demise of Jeddah but with thermal radiation and a supersonic/hypersonic shockwave. If you want a volcano, there is one. I used to joke it would go off in 2023. But now I do not joke anymore, as an eruption does not look decades or years away, but months. And it is going to be terrible. And I say it with sadness, because there are very good people there.

Yes that's crazy, looks like something out of WW1. Going by the animation it looks like the 5 that survived uninjured were relatively close together, must have been some cover there or just an area not targeted for some reason. As the besiegers I don't know why the marines are being used this way, surely they could starve out the Japanese for a time and only attack specific areas with alot of armour support, i'm no general obviously but it just seems mad to me.

Thank you for humanizing the Japanese and making this video. I’ve been following you for a year and hoping one day you would cover Iwo Jima. Grandfather fought here with the 3rd Marines, 21st regiment. He carried the B.A.R. and lasted 17 days according to the documents. That means he landed February 21 and was wounded March 10th. This video helps me to understand what those 17 days were like for him as they captured the second airfield, then participated in the taking of hill 331, then finally hill 362c. He was wounded by grenade and evacuated off the island. He was temporarily blind and deaf. He would met my grandmother, a nurse, as he recovered in the hospital in St. Louis, MO and they would go on to have nine children. He never stopped having headaches from his injury and they became worse over the years, sometimes debilitating him and preventing him from being able to work. He passed away in 1964 from a brain aneurysm leaving his wife and children behind. He’s buried at Jefferson Barracks.

I think it should be mentioned that 2,251 B-29s landed on Iwo Jima as a total from March 1945 to the end of the war, and that not all of them were emergency landings. AAF ground crews reported that of the 2,251 landings, about 80% were for refueling purposes (to extend flight ranges) or for minor mechanical repairs. With that being said, 20% of 2,251 is still 450 B-29s landing due to emergencies, and consequently about 5,000 airmen who were saved from potentially crashing at sea.

now add that up against 27,071 total casualties, 1 escort carrier sunk, 1 fleet carrier heavily damaged, 137 tanks destroyed and 153 airplanes shot down. Not saying if it was worth it or not, just stating the numbers
@r.c.1881
@r.c.1881 Жыл бұрын
@@thesayxx yeah, this was definitely a phyrric victory. Perhaps had the US continued with the proposed invasion of Japan then a sufficent number of US personnel would have been rescued so to amortize the losses, but then again, this would have happened at the cost of further US operations and ensuing losses. I believe that Iwo, Tarawa and Peleliu could well be described as the biggest american blunders in the Pacific, and good examples of what happens when faulty intel meets poor strategic planning.
@graceneilitz7661
@graceneilitz7661 11 ай бұрын
@@r.c.1881Or perhaps it is hindsight. Perhaps the Americans made the best decision under the information that they had. After all , they still thought that an invasion of Japan would have to happen. And if it did happen, than Iwo Jima would have likely been a valuable refueling/front base.

I don't know why I never noticed this before in the wide shots, but @4:40 and 9:00 is extremely sobering to me. As the view zoomed out, I noticed lots of colored dots on the battlefield, wondering what it was. I only now realize that you kept the US and Japanese flag markers representing the dead from all the previous engagements. Ever single one of those tiny dots represents a dead Japanese or American, really puts things into perspective.

The in depth coverage of this battle is so good that it makes the reality of it even more depressing. The certain death these soldiers faced is just on another level. Somehow when other battles are covered you sort of feel that there was a chance of survivability. But here all odds are stacked against the participants... on both sides that is.

@@supersarge24 That's a bit of a misrepresentation of WW1. Yes, the battles that everyone knows are usually famous for the horrendous death tolls, but in truth a lot of the later battles demonstrate that the high commands on both sides were learning the lessons of the Somme, Passchendaele and Gallipoli. By 1918, the Entente forces are essentially using WW2-style combined-arms tactics. Walking barrages followed by massed armour assaults, with an emphasis on better communication and improved initiative at the company and platoon level is a far cry from the first years of the Great War.

You guys do an amazing job on these videos!! You should do one on D-Day. I couldn't imagine how long that would take...you really help us understand how massive these operations truly were. God bless.

Former doc here, thinking of the pilots thanking the marines for giving them a safe airfield choked me up a bit. I know the Marines would have felt good in that moment.

if I had a nickel for every time the Marines decided to just not shell the enemy before an attack and just instantly won a battle through the element of surprise, I'd have like 3 nickels. which isn't a lot, but it's hilarious that it happened 3 times.

Many of these positions the Marines had to take relied heavily on pre-sighted fire. The loss of 5 sherman tanks on the airfield shows that use of smoke would have denied observers the ability to know when a target crossed their fields of fire.

Would have allowed them to evacuate those 195 men instead of leaving them exposed all day.
