I would also add that to my knowledge the overwhelming example we are taught is to reach out to people and to love them. See Lehi, Alma the Elder and others as examples. But yeah, shunning a person is a human thing. It’s natural. And something we should learn to not do.

Absolutely correct! I am a convert in the NorthEast, so I understand I have a blind spot to the experiences of past generations or those in other regions that might have a more robust church population, but from the examples I have seen in my ward and stake (my wife’s family included), I have not seen any our the members disown or cut off their friends and family who have left the church, but I have seen some examples of the opposite. I have seen children who have left the church forbid their parents from seeing their grandchildren. Some of the loveliest and humblest people I have met, unable to visit with their grandchildren, solely on the basis of their faith. Even though they accept that their child has walked a different path and respect their child’s decision to raise their children the way they want. I have seen wonderful people ridiculed or abandoned by friends and family who have walked away. Again, not saying members of the church dont or wouldnt do this, but I’m echoing that it is not a behavior taught in the gospel, and it’s rather opposed to what we are taught all together.

@jakeconnell6417 that makes sense about it also being regional. I'm a convert in Arkansas, which is the Bible belt. I lived in Utah briefly, I liked it. However, one thing I will say is that the difference between Utah and other high lds places and the Bible belt is only if they read the BoM or not. You see, my experience in both places is that they are both full of good people strong in their faiths but both peoples are afraid to mingle with one another because of unearthly consequences. The truth is that Jesus gave 2 commandments and neither can be achieved if we do not first accept when someone finds faith their own way. Whether they're right or wrong, we shouldn't choose to be wrong by no longer loving our neighbor because they found faith another way.

@neodigremo strangely enough, the lady first claims that her beef with the church is the teaching that the natural man is an enemy of God. The second beef that she has is that natural man is an enemy of God by natural man using feelings to make decisions to push others away simply over disagreements or personal faith crisis.

When I left the church in my mid teens I had similar feelings to this, but it was just simply not true. My family stood by me through all my mistakes, my destructive behaviour and addictions. Never pressuring me to return, but there whenever I needed and the only thing offered from my Dad was a blessing when I was really struggling. Which for some reason I always took him up on. If it wasn't for them following Christ's example I wouldn't be alive today. And now after almost 3 decades not active, I am back at church with all my children and my husband all baptised and have never had more joy in my life. I love the Temple and have never felt more peace in my life from attending. It breaks my heart to some people's experiences, but shunning is not the Saviour's way.

He started knocking down the church, people I love. He was so upset I wouldn't go his way that he cut off all relationships. I still text him about one a month, letting him know anything new or interesting in the family. I send a birthday gift each year on his birthday On Christmas. I send a box w.ith presents for him and his best friend. His friend is not close to his family and doesn't hear from them at Christmas or anytime. I make the Christmas treats we made when the kids were little and growing up. I never get any acknowledgment, thank you, or comment back on my text. I will keep it up so he knows we love him. .

The cutting off someone who leaves your belief system is super common and not just something that ExMos have to deal with. My wife’s father was very mad when she joined the church, thankfully he came around, but it took time. I’ve lost close friends and family by simply becoming Christian, not even specifically that I became LDS. I am glad that you mentioned it because many ExMos don’t just leave the church, they leave and then they start bashing it. That will definitely cause a rift.

I guess I had good examples growing up because my extended family accepted everyone regardless of their church membership and attendance. My grandma led the way and was such a good example. What really frustrates me is when those same people who have left the church, that we continued to love and accept, proceed to trash on those who have stayed. Who speak rude and hateful things to your face, when you would never do anything like that back to them. And they continue to do it repeatedly so it really makes you not want to hang out as much, even though you actually still really want to be around them just without the hate, and you just want to continue to be family. And that's what Jesus wants is for us to love others. Sometimes they make it hard but we keep on trying.

This is a quote from Neil A Maxwell's April 1999 talk - quoting Joseph Smith: In one degree or another we all struggle with selfishness. Since it is so common, why worry about selfishness anyway? Because selfishness is really self-destruction in slow motion. No wonder the Prophet Joseph Smith urged, “Let every selfish feeling be not only buried, but annihilated” Everyone should read this talk - this quote keeps going.. it's awesome!!

So short story about me… my mother was a convert to the church. I got baptized into it when I was very young and didn’t fully understand the commitment so I was making so of course. Eventually I began screwing up and making mistakes. It did not help that my father despised the church with a passion. by the time I was a young man and was totally giving into the natural man, I made some serious mistakes and ended up losing my place in the church. The worst part was, I was madly in love with a woman who I really wanted to marry. Because we made some poor choices, and did not do what we should have done and wait until we were married, I ended up losing her. She left the church, and I ended up being disciplined and got the boot. It was a very painful chapter in my life. I spent the next 25 years drifting. Did a tour in the military. Traveled around. Tried it all kinds of different spiritual practices and beliefs and churches, but never truly found anything that felt deep enough to immerse my heart. Eventually, after a lot of prayers from my wonderful mother and my sister, who was joined to her eternal companion in the temple… I guess the prayers paid off, and I made my way back to the church. I never felt the anger and bitterness against the church as some of the people I see on the Internet. It’s incredible. I’ve never seen a group of people, so dedicated to attacking and tearing something down as I do the people who are post LDS. As if they have nothing else better to do in their lives. To me that is just sour grapes. People are angry because they have been hurt somehow and they want to hurt someone back. I totally get it. One of the reasons why I stayed away from the church was because of some of the people who were members that were very self-righteous, or they would hang out in social groups or clicks. It just didn’t seem very Christlike to me, and I couldn’t find myself believing in a church where the people conducted themselves in that way. Thankfully, changes have been made over the years as to how the members do things and conduct themselves. Some will still do whatever they want to do but that is on them. They were also big changes made in my own heart and mind, and I am wiser now than I was 30 years ago. I’m slowly, but surely walking away from the thorny path back onto the covenant path little by little. With help from people around me who care. There are so many hidden treasures within the gospel of Jesus Christ that he has opened my eyes and my heart to, that I don’t think I could ever go back to being a totally natural man again. I still have my struggles daily and weekly believe me. Being a recovered addict means that you are never truly recovered. It’s always a fight. So, my message to all the people who are throwing away the gospel, and all of its beauty, with both hands is this… until you have stood in the darkness as long as I have, you can never truly appreciate the light that you had. I suppose whatever will be will be. Parable of the tin versions says only half the members of the church will be ready. That means at least half. The people in the church aren’t truly dedicated to the gospel. They bear the name of the church, but they don’t bear the name of Christ on their heart. Just my opinion.

Elder Maxwell: "individuals who lecture the rest of us about Church doctrines in which they no longer believe. They criticize the use of Church resources to which they no longer contribute. They condescendingly seek to counsel the Brethren whom they no longer sustain. Confrontive, except of themselves, of course, they leave the Church, but they cannot leave the Church alone"

I agree completely that we as members of the LDS church should love and respect others no matter their beliefs, especially family member. It is a two-way street where, as you say, we need to set boundaries that neither side will cross. It can be hard sometimes, especially during holidays such as Christmas, when they may not want to participate in certain religious traditions anymore. But you can make it work if you are willing to compromise and respect each other. So many people are not willing to compromise at all.

All these folks who claim that “shunning“ happens in the LDS church and is one of our teachings are absolutely full of it. Just because someone expresses disappointment because their loved one has turned their back on everything that they’ve been taught, Doesn’t mean that they’re being kicked out of the family. The story quoted here was merely this girls fear/claim. nothing had even happened to her. It is very naïve and quite frankly selfish to think that you’re gonna shake things up and everyone else is supposed to just smile about it. There’s naturally got to be some time for grieving and adaptation. But yes, the relationship will change in some significant ways. That’s not your parents doing. You did that. it doesn’t mean anyone is less loved. So tired of cry bullies.

Alma 24:30 And thus we can plainly discern, that after a people have been once enlightened by the Spirit of God, and have had great knowledge of things pertaining to righteousness, and then have fallen away into sin and transgression, they become more hardened, and thus their state becomes worse than though they had never known these things. Alma 47:36 Now these dissenters, having the same instruction and the same information of the Nephites, yea, having been instructed in the same knowledge of the Lord, nevertheless, it is strange to relate, not long after their dissensions they became more hardened and impenitent, and more wild, wicked and ferocious than the Lamanites--drinking in with the traditions of the Lamanites; giving way to indolence, and all manner of lasciviousness; yea, entirely forgetting the Lord their God.

Guess Paul was a Mormon: 14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. 15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. 16 If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. 19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 21 I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. 22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: Romans 7

Hi Jackson, great to see you again. Where have you been, bro? Anyway, so many "ex-mormon" videos are chocking my KZfaq feed. There is an Allison Grenfell (?), who is an ex-member, that is revealing everything that is SACRED, not secret, in our temple worship, including the wording of the ordinances, the clothing, and the requirements of the temple (that excluded some of her family from attending her wedding) and not being able to wear the wedding dress of her choice. Not to mention all the ex-church haters that support her and who are of a likeminded attitude. Just so you know, I had no such trouble wearing the wedding dress of my choosing, for my sealing, that I bought from a well known, non-church, bridal boutique, and wore for my wedding the year before I joined the church. It was of the same standard as a temple dress, without the train. Makes me wonder what kind of dress it was that it did not meet temple standards. I think it was a question of sleeve length. I have seen faux arm sleeves made for such dresses for the temple ceremony that could be removed outside the temple to reveal the short sleeves. No problem. I think the other problem was that her sister of Young Womens age, a member, was not allowed to attend the temple ceremony, not to mention the non-member family and friends that could not attended the temple ceremony. NewNameNoah, is a wolf is sheep's clothing that takes videos of all temple ordinances that he participates in, in various temples, even in the Celestial rooms, and uploads these videos to his channel. So many ex-members with gripes about the church that seem to stem from their own understanding, or misunderstandings, about Christ's Gospel. These people are resentful and hateful. It makes me upset that they can throw it all away because they lack knowledge and understanding, coupled with the ignorance and pride of their natural being. We ALL have to stand accountable for our words, thoughts and deeds, our sins, but I would seriously hate to be in their shoes come judgement day. 😔❤️🙏🇦🇺

Newer to this channel. I just wanted to say that it is refreshing to see a Christlike reaction to an "anti" video. finding common ground but also clarifying or correcting ideas and statements that aren't true to doctrine. I think it's important to acknowledge the unique struggles individuals might have experienced in the church which lead them to want to leave (I do believe those experiences and emotions are real in most cases). I can think back to many things my parents have said or taught that wasn't quite aligned with the true doctrine of Christ (well intentioned as it was) that I am still in some ways unlearning or re-learning. In a world full of very imperfect, but mostly well-meaning people, I feel like it is so so so important to personally develop a deep understanding of and relationship with God and Jesus Christ. My once LDS wife made a mistake in high school resulting in an out of wedlock child. She was shunned by her LDS friends and treated like scum. Only her non LDS friends stayed by her side. She left the LDS faith after that and never looked back. That was 40 years ago. I’ve never been LDS but was horrified by that level of severe toxic judgement based on a single act.

My daughter made decisions at 12 years old I didn't want for her. She had friends who told her we would hate, shun , and kick her out of the house. These individuals claimed they were telling her this because they cared for her, but they removed the only source of support she'd ever known. She rejected us and put us at arms length for the next two years while he struggled with ideas of suicide and immersed herself in other ideas. Through all of this we continually repeated that we didn't need to agree on things to love one another. It was only after a suicide attempt and calling police where I came to meet her that she finally realized we love her. Its been another two years, and she hasn't returned to the gospel, but our relationship has been much better. She still struggles with things but she knows we are here for her. These type of claims cause more hurt and serious consequences than the reality. We don't have to unconditionally accept and agree on all ideas to perpetuate our love within our families. There can be a lot of fear on both sides of these issues, but we can find our way to the other side. No one can demand perfection from either perspective, but only working things out while maintaining love.

My experience working with and responding to anti-Saints is that they'll fine ANYTHING they can to gripe about Christ's teachings, and the church. I call out their religious bigotry, when they attack the church, its leaders and/or members, as we're all free to disagree with other's beliefs, but shouldn't attack them or lie about them, which creates hatred, vilification and demonization of people, which leads to excommunication orders and Holocausts. We should ALWAYS call out and report illegal acts and practices. I hear this a lot too. Having spent most of my life in Utah I believe that this does happen from time to time (members are people and are certainly not perfect), but the majority of what I have witnessed is that people who make mistakes are not shunned, not pushed away, not rejected. They are still loved and treated as children of God who have made mistakes just like the rest of us. Unfortunately, those few cases of negative reactions echo louder than the positive ones. And it is certainly a favorite tactic among enemies of the church to claim that this is common practice, even something that is taught or encouraged. More often what I have seen is that the person has adopted a lifestyle that is in direct conflict with the Gospel and they are mad at the church for not allowing them to be in good standing, hold a temple recommend, callings, etc. They will then claim they have been shunned and go on social media against the church.

In my youth and as a young adult I can directly relate to those feelings of having to pretend to be someone I wasn't. But I came to find out that I wasn't ready to become the person that my family wanted me to be because the world was far more enticing and I wanted a "normal" life. I had a "home" me and a "school" me and when I became an adult I fully rebelled to the point where I hopped on a Greyhound bus and moved 2000 miles to live with my online fiance. I did everything I wanted to do that was against the "rules". Did any of it truly make me happy? Sometimes, but I was a child in the world of adults and I realized that the person I was didn't come from what I enjoyed or covered up with a false sense of fun. I couldn't understand why I was only friends with the guys at church and why the guys I had no interest in or I could see going nowhere because of their own decisions wanted to date me. It only came much later in my life when I finally listened to what my mother had told me years ago, you marry the person you are, you marry those who are on your level. Whether it's education, lifestyle, or knowledge, you marry the person who meets you at your current level. I married a bum the first time around because I was a bum. The next time, I had gotten my life, spirit, and journey back on course and I married someone who complimented me and provided that level of spiritual and intellectual bonding. I strongly suggest everyone read " And They Were Not Ashamed". This book addressed the sexual issue that most everyone gets stuck on. Procreation and bonding physically with our spouses is not bad, but Satan has decided to corrupt all things and if he can corrupt our physical bodies to where we deaden ourselves to the true purpose of it then it becomes a sin. You are spot on that we can do anything, but we need to learn to control ourselves. The one lesson the Lord has taught me over my whole life is to be patient. Patience sucks but I try to find things to do to keep me from dwelling on the waiting. Thanks for reading my book of a comment if you did. Have a lovely day!

It is ironic that the sex shame they are rebelling against is actually a function of the natural man. The adversary entices shame into our minds for sexual desires. The Spirit entices us to see the beauty and gift of waiting for the proper time. So their very response is demonstrative of a natural man response. People do feel a sense of release when they let go of the shame around sex, but that isn't because indulgence at all levels is acceptable. It is because shame around sex is a destructive natural man response

I have 6 children and 18 grandchildren. Of those 6, only 2 are active and in the Church. Have my husband and I disowned the other 4? NO! We love our kids, and they love us. They know our views and faith and respect that, just as we respect them. Last Christmas, we spent with our daughter and her family where we went to Mass, worshipped with them, and had a wonderful time. Our grandsons were in the Nativity, and our granddaughter was in the choir. If we had refused to go, we would have missed an awesome program. I would rather be with my family than stand on some false moral high ground. They know I love Jesus and believe that I do because I am trying to be like Him. Do I wish all my children embraced the Gospel? Yes. Do they know that? Yes. But withholding my love from them seems counterproductive. I have faith that one day all things will be set right and my family will be in tact when that happens. It will be a great day. Until then, I'll support my kids and grandkids in their righteous endeavors even if they're not what I wished.

Regarding the video about leaving the Church, I agree as well. It shouldn't be shunning or ridicule. If they're apostates, if they feel they don't belong, if they're faking it, it's right that everyone should know and they should leave. However family should still love them and try to bring them back (with love and good example). Anf if for it all, they refuse, still love them. The biggest gift the Lord blessed us with was choice, it's their choice. I will say however, for me, anybody that left or moved away from the belief, the relationship was broken. I was good to them, kind, etc. But I feel they have denied that which is best and most important to me and I cannot have a strong relationship with anyone who does not love the Lord more than they love me. And I take that in any and every relationship I have or will ever have. I can be good and kind, I will love them, but it will never be the same.

1. External locus of control - notice the passive voice she and many women adopt. They think of themselves as things being acted upon. It’s never “I learned…” it’s “we are taught…” This creates spiritual blindness because we are in fact commanded to act, not be acted upon. It’s refusing responsibility and accountability to oneself. 2. Avoiding shame points to therapy culture which denies the usefulness of pain in stirring one to repentance and a closer relationship with God. The psychoanalysts of the past better understood that suffering avoided is merely suffering prolonged and multiplied. Lean into it and be healed by Christ. 3. Divine potential vs. divine nature - women tend to struggle with establishing an individual identity, opting for their identity to be solely in relation to others. When it all becomes too much and the work of figuring out who you really are begins, women tend to focus on their nature more than their potential. Focusing on “Who am I?” More than “Who can I become?” tends to perpetuate poor mental health because we aren’t here to only figure out who we are. We’re here to become ourselves.

The Book of Proverbs is where I got to know God the Father and what He says. The world is familiar with Jesus, but not God the Father. Many practice overcoming the natural man every day. Our Milotary, First Responders, Extreme Sportsman do it, etc. If we can jump out of airplanes, run into fires, stand in front of bullets, etc., we can overcome sexual urges that are not 6 of the natural reproduction process. Something I learned about the natural man or natural human being versus a spiritually enlightened one. The natural man or woman behaves like an animal. Animals inherently are not clean. Think about it. To rise above that base state to the level of enlightenment is to overcome the world, and by extension, overcome the animalistic tendencies of the natural man. It means that you have full control of your body and your mind and your heart. You are in control. All aspects of your soul are united as one. You cannot blame a decision you make on something or someone else or an impulse. This is one of the reasons we are here on this earth. To learn about how to control ourselves and control physical matter in a physical, three-dimensional world in a mortal body. We cannot learn this any other way, except by experiencing it physically. That being said, we are spiritual beings, living in a physical world, having a physical and spiritual experience at the same time. The trick is, learning how to reconcile both worlds with each other and making the conscientious choice to rise above the physical and back up to the spiritual plane. It has taken me many years to learn this.
