The entire album was recorded on tour, in dressing rooms, backstage, onstage and in hotel rooms so the whole theme of life on the road and travel permeates the album. The song itself “ Running On Empty” was written by Jackson Brown with the idea and song coming together on his drive to the nearby recording studio.

Jackson Brown is so AWESOME!!! My senior year in High School our Civics teacher Mr. Holmes played Jackson Brown everyday!!! When he was teaching, we had to pay attention to him. As long as we were paying attention and not passing notes back and forth (that was 1973-1974 way before pagers or cell phones!!) So the last 30 min we could listen to Jackson Brown while we were doing our assignment, quizzes or tests, until class was dismissed. What great memories!!!😎

@@douglasstudeman5137 Alrighty then!! What did y'all do when you had to SPIT!!! LOL 😆 MY dad chewed and he kept a small paper cup by his chair (and carried it around the house, if he wss chewing) and a cup in his truck. He folded 1/2 of a paper towel for the very bottom (I assume to absorb liquid), I never asked cuz it grossed me out. Then he folded one and layed it on top, so he would lift that out when he spit and covered it back up! I'm thinking he did that at my mom's request!! LOL Now that was a weird topic to talk about!! He quit several years before he passed away. Where do you live? I'm in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lost a CH-46 helicopter three of the four crew paid the ultimate sacrifice. Three aircraft carrier battlegroups waiting to see what would happen with the Iranian hostages. Just did our job no thanks needed.

Was born in 64 in the UK but so much part of my life in the UK. Maybe strange but music crosses continents particularly where I grew up, in Glasgow.

This song stands out in memories of my teens, though I can't recall what was the exact events surrounding the era of this song coming out, it just stands out. Oh yeah,it was when my parents divorced and we moved to a new city, and all the drama that entailed. Probably felt like I was running on empty at that time myself,in a brand new car, that just had the tires, and battery jacked. 🤔😌😔🚶👣 Divorce usually sucks for the kids,I think. Still, I love this jam!💓

Saw him in concert several times. Great performer and seriously underrated. "Before the Deluge" is a classic song.

I was at the Occidental College graduation (with my father, a prof Emeritus) in 2004 when Browne received his Honorary Doctorate for his work on social justice. He clapped for ever graduate who crossed the stage that day. It wasn't about him.

This was also the year Prince was inducted and I recall hearing that he was watching and digging this performance. Very cool I thought since he dominated the show that night.
