I bought this album for my husband’s 21 birthday in 1977. 2 months later he died in a car accident . Jackson Browne’s music was a lifeline for me. His first 4 albums still make their way into my playlists.

The day I got the album, I took it to my family's basement rec room and closed the door, plugged in my headphones and listened to the whole thing. It was intense, and immensely satisfying. The next night I persuaded my mother, a classical pianist and skeptic of popular music, to listen to the title track. She was deeply moved and became a Jackson Browne convert. That's a beautiful and cherished memory for me.

So many memories. I was 16 and in love. My husband worked grave yard so I would stay up all night and draw and do artwork at the kitchen table. I always listened to Jackson Browne while I did my drawings, he or James Taylor. I found I did my best stuff listening to Browne. I stayed up all night waiting for my husband to come so we could then sleep together and be on the same routine/pattern. He died 3 years ago, we were together 41 years. He took me to my first concert, and it was Jackson Browne at Freeborn Hall at UC Davis. Thanks Jackson Browne for being there at the best time in my life.

I'm going to find myself a girl who'll show me what laughter means, and we'll fill in the missing colors in each other's paint by number dreams...when I heard that lyric the first time I cried because I've never heard love expressed so beautifully. Thanks, Jackson, for helping me know such love exists.
@roberthatcher216310 жыл бұрын
I always saw this line pointing out the huge gulf or contrast between the possible truly deep connections between 2 people and our simplistic/superficial cultural structures of our relationships - 'paint by number'. Posing for art--- but actually just fill in the correct color between the lines like children -- carefully following the outside structures or definitions. Pretending they are deep. The next lines - hide behind dark glasses while making love -- then get up and keep our robotic time table we call living. The point of the song is that we are living what we pretend and accept as life. The Pretender. rober.
@SuperSandyguy10 жыл бұрын
I hear this song as a man who is looking for a normal life, tired of being a 'star' and just wanting to live in a town where everyone is doing what you expect them to. I think The Pretender is the star who wants to settle down and fall in love and stay away from the highway. And he thinks this is his last chance. I think it was a fantasy of Jackson's, who of course has been making music for almost his whole life. And the lyrics that I commented on, fill in the missing colors in each other's paint by number dreams; well, that sounds like a perfect blend of two people who need each other to complete themselves. I love it!

Yes, I agree with you. He's in the R&R Hall of Fame, but I wish more people knew how great he really is. At least some of my friends do. In 1974 I was fortunate enough to be driving home from my job in Los Angeles, late one afternoon, to the SF Valley, when I was about to get on to the freeway. Though I normally didn't pick up hitch hikers, I had already made eye contact and something about this young man's urging demeanor, along with his smile, made me feel it would be okay.. It ended up becoming MY lucky day as he had a passel of record albums with him. He worked for the recording industry and he GAVE me Jackson's album "Saturate Before Using"! Along with the Beatles, Jackson Brown is my favorite musician. I became a devoted fan attending his shows and buying all his recordings. I became a musician myself and can't thank him enough for his positive influence in my life and on our culture. I once heard Glenn Frey say, "Jackson Browne wrote the songs we (the Eagles) WISH we had."

I wasn't alive when this was written or produced, but even nearly 50 years later the music of this time period is passed on. It was and still is so pure. I'm so thankful for these artists who passed their gifts on down, and their voices won't ever die.

I'm addicted to this song. Whoever did this arrangement and came up with the background vocals had a stroke of musical genus. It adds a dimension of strength that wasn't in the studio version and makes it outrageously great.

Possibly Scott Thurston who Jackson collaborated with ,frequently,at that time.?

Graham Nash and David Crosby probably played a hand since they sang backup on the original recording. They were all living in close proximity and frequently had jam sessions at each other's homes.
@davidedwards69 Жыл бұрын
Yep certainly the harmonies on the album track are Crosby/Nash influenced

What a stroke of genius this song is! I come back to it time after time, and find myself humming and singing it at work and at home. Songs of this calibre just aren't written anymore. If this track doesn't move you in any way, or has no emotional impact on you, you either haven't listened eagerly, or you have no soul! That is all
