My wife used to be on my case about every mental misstep and mistake. I felt like trash. Was talking to a friend that had just finished his therapist degree and he recommended I get tested for the ADHD. I’m like “doesn’t everyone every now and then throw their car keys away and keep the receipt when they get gas then wonder why they can’t get in the car and need to rummage through the garbage can?” He was like “no” … so had a psychologist administer the tests and I was off the charts. … went on Adderall and became Superman. Had so much mental focus and clarity I could accomplish anything. … wife no longer had anything to complain about. Housework chores etc immaculate and done before she even got home. Wife was still pissed at me but couldn’t articulate why. Marriage counseling and basically she just didn’t like me anymore and oh yeah there was somebody else I didn’t know about on the side. Now I’m divorced and she got all of my crap. But at least the ADHD diagnosis allowed me to find out the truth. After 3 years of Adderall my blood pressure got up really high though so I had to stop. I wish I could go on it again without side-effects.

My Dr. Told me the reason why I got good grades is because I adapted to the system. Basically, American schools make you memorize the test, you spit it all back out on the test, then you never need it again. I learned how to do that so my adhd wasn't as noticeable until I got to college where that no longer works. Sounds like Nux essentially did the same. Memorize what you need and then promptly move on.

That's exactly why you should get tested. Getting a new diagnosis and finding out how your mind thinks helps so much with learning how to live your life in a healthy way. For myself I got diagnosed with OCD about 3 years ago and it completely changed how I went through my treatments with anxiety attacks. It was a huge relief finding it out. Espescially because with the diagnosis it helped with my treatment plan for anxiety attacks. Apparently the type of CBT needed for normal anxiety and OCD are exactly the opposite of each other and the way I was doing it before the diagnosis very likely could have been making things worse....

"If you can't make your own neurotransmitters from scratch, store-bought is just fine, too." Best advice I ever came across regarding medication and these sorts of disorders. Trying to say you don't want to take medication that will "change the way your brain works" because "you won't feel normal" is fundamentally flawed reasoning: if you have a neurotransmitter dysfunction, then you've *never* felt normal. You've literally never even _experienced_ what normal is *supposed* to feel like. It'd be like a person blind from birth being offered a way to see for the first time and saying, "Nope, I don't want it to be brighter than normal." It doesn't change you onto someone _different;_ it changes you *back* into the person you were supposed to have been from the start, but were never able to be.

This hits. I wasn't diagnosed with ADHD until i was in my thirties. I did very, very well in school (honors and AP classes) until i made it to college. The first two years of college were a struggle. I didn't learn how to regulate my time and focus until i was nearly failing classes. I only got diagnosed after it started to negatively affect me at work and suddenly my whole life made sense. I wish i was diagnosed way earlier but as I understand it, women often aren't diagnosed in childhood. I wouldn't wish ADHD on anyone. Sometimes it just makes life suck.

It's so facts on the mental state prep stuff Nux. Every time I have a task that's relatively simple to complete, I have random have another task that takes precedence. for example, I have an essay due the next day, what do I do? start cleaning my room, organize my stuff, etc. Then when I have nothing else to procrastinate with I'm forced to lock in to finish the essay.

Pretty insightful and nice to see her talk about the effects in such an effective way. It makes sense though completing a lesser task helps to focus on a greater one. Finishing another task puts it out of your mind and puts you in a positive 'that wasn't so bad, this next one might feel even more rewarding!'. Humans as a whole like to have things 'finished' though that definition is quite broad. And being true to yourself is great. Just as we are reminded of that every nux vid. : )

Diagnosed adhd as a young kid, self diagnosed autistic a couple years ago.... But it's only really been recently that i really looked into what that meant....i knew, but was still in this self depricating denial of how much it genuinely effects me on a day to day basis. Still a constant battle, but at least i feel like I'm finally figuring myself out..... Only took 30 fugking years....

The thing about adhd, is it USUALLY presents differently between the genders, usually guys exhibit more hyperactive tendencies for adhd, while gals usually exhibit the attention deficit part, I say usually be there are a smaller segment of both that exhibit the opposite, me included. I've got adhd (inattentive type) and almost everything Jaden has expressed as of 11:35 have been my experience as well.

Bro, once I figured out that school work was more like a chore instead of something I had to somehow wrap my head around. That change in perspective made it easy. I would complete my work and then sleep, sometimes waking me up thinking I still had work to do as I tell them I'm done with what could've been my homework. I would watch KZfaq videos of Sonic Mania and Sonic Jam on the Saturn and or just sleep. I had everything under my control, exempted MOST OF MY TESTS for my final year, and even got sugar cubes from my teacher. How's that for someone who used to take special ed in elementary. Oh wait, I must've had early ADHD and grew out of it.

I'm studying to become a psychologist/psychiatrist and honestly from what I learned is what keeps people from getting diagnoses or help is "stigma". Stigma has been a huge problem in mental health for well...ever...as it literally means "a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person". It took a long time for mental health to get to the point it is now where Cognitive Behavior Therapy is taking root and where Stigma is being removed from modern takes on therapy. A lot of books teach us about stigma in a means to avoid it as much as possible with patients. Unfortunately stigma is hard to remove from a culture and there is still a lot of stigma against those of mental health despite it being incredibly common, but professionals are doing their best to remove it in hopes the populace will follow someday.

So like I did great in school without studying but the INSTANT it hit the review portion towards the end of the year for the standardized tests, my grades would PLUMMET. Reviewing stuff I already knew was TORTURE because it was boring and uninteresting and not a challenge. Trying to focus and do the schoolwork was AWFUL during review time. Like my grades dropped so intensely one year that my folks thought I was dealing with substance use until they realized I was so unable to focus on my schoolwork that I just...didn't. On top of that I was so disorganized no matter what I did or how hard I tried to BECOME organized. BUT I was a quiet kid and often fell into hyperfocusing on things so from the outside it looked like I was a quiet kid who had no trouble occupying myself sitting still, partially because anxiety meant an utter TERROR of drawing attention to myself. Was finally diagnosed with ADHD in my late twenties. My psych dr told me that the facts that coffee chills me out along with self describing my brain as an old frozen windows computer with multiple tabs open and WHERE IS ALL THE DIFFERENT MUSIC COMING FROM and I can't calm anything down and it's all on FIRE should probably have been my first clues that yeah, I might have ADHD. I'm medicated now and it makes things SO much easier because I can actually THINK and accomplish things without having to internally scream at myself to just DO THE TASK.

As someone with combined type ADHD, yes it definitely exists. I got diagnosed in 2nd grade.... it was very easy to tell.... I also have GAD which i self diagnosed when i was in college studying Abnormal Psychology and recognizing the symptoms in myself about a year later. The third diagnosis I have is OCD which i only got diagnosed last year. Neither me or my psychologist were aware that OCD can exist completely in ones own head and have absolutely nothing to do with obsessing over cleanliness or getting sick. Apparently it's also possible to have something called cognitive OCD which causes me to have circular thinking and repeated thoughts about specific things that give me anxiety. In the process of trying to not think about those things I end up thinking about them more as a result which increases my anxiety just for me to try and not think about those things and thus keep thinking about it and getting more anxiety again.....
