James Altucher Found Himself by Losing Everything (and You Can Too!)

James Altucher has rebounded from personal catastrophe so many times in his 49 years, it's hard to imagine a more qualified evangelist for personal reinvention. During the dot-com boom of the 1990s, Altucher made millions designing corporate websites, only to squander it all on gambling and a string of disastrous investment decisions. "I was probably losing about a million [dollars] a week for an entire summer," he tells Reason's Nick Gillespie. "I just made every stupid decision in the book."

Reason is the planet's leading source of news, politics, and culture from a libertarian perspective. Go to reason.com for a point of view you won't get from legacy media and old left-right opinion magazines.
____
With $143 left in his bank account, Altucher contemplated suicide. "I equated my self-worth with my net worth," he says, "and I just figured there's no way I'm going to dig myself out of this hole."
Instead of self-destruction, Altucher created himself anew. He dedicated himself to learning about finance, reading over a hundred books about investing. He built a new career as a hedge fund manager, earning writing gigs at TheStreet.com and The Financial Times.
The real estate crisis of 2008 wiped the slate clean. Finding himself with nothing to lose yet again, Altucher began blogging about his riches-to-rags-to-riches-again life story, eventually writing books-18 of them so far-for an audience that had felt the sting of the recession.
Crawling out of the abyss a few times has made Altucher wary of the American Dream. A Cornell and Carnegie Mellon graduate, he scorns higher education as an overpriced luxury. Home ownership is great for the banks, but a lousy deal for home owners. Hedge funds are a scam. He's never had credit card debt because he's never had a credit card.
In keeping with his philosophy of radical self-creation, Altucher's latest identity is a 21st century urban ascetic. He has pared down his possessions, discarding every item he doesn't need. He is determined that nothing get in the way of his chosen life, his best self. Today, he lives in AirBnB rentals and owns fifteen things that he carries in a small canvas bag.
Altucher's self-published book about the art of self-creation, Choose Yourself! Be Happy, Make Millions, Live the Dream, charts his life story, detailing how he bounced back, time and again, from disasters personal and financial. Equal parts self-help manual, cautionary tale, and tell-all autobiography, Choose Yourself! challenges us to create the best version of ourselves through a constant process of optimism, authenticity, and hard work.

Thank you for doing this interview with James Altucher. I am just learning about him, and I find him fascinating - an independent thinker, creative, intuitive, intelligent and humble. He's not afraid to question the "status quo", which in doing so can open our minds to greater innovation and positive change.

Great piece! around 11:45 - Stocks are such a BS Industry. The Key is ownership! (See Hanaurer an Liu on employee-owned businesses) 16:00 why would you go to college? MOOC (not mentioned by name, but clearly mentioned) 18:20 Cornell Comp Sic undergrad and C-Mellon PhD and at his first job was smoked by the coders that and had to be sent to a remedial course in programming (sounds like Bell Labs). Wow. 23:50 maybe the best advice a parent can give a child regarding high school senior-year and college planning 30:30 - warning to ideologues 33:55 - the solutions are outpacing the problems ..... Hmm... Maybe if you are are a millionaire. Then again, if here is a lesson pr moral to draw from this interview is "you are your solution" or at least the beginning and a big part of it. 34: 30 create a blueprint, weed our corruption, NJ an NY are just fill of corruption.

Great job, Nick! I've followed Altucher for several years now & find his podcasts the most inspirational and insightful available. James steps on his clients sometimes, because he gets so excited - but his interview talent has improved plenty since I first started hearing his podcasts (he might have had the last one with Wayne Dyer - and his Peter Thiel one is especially helpful to anybody focused on the new economy). Altucher wanted to interview Gary Johnson ("big supporter!" James told me) when I was volunteering on the campaign - but somehow the media team there kept dropping the ball & we never lined it up. Still, I have let the Kibbes & Nick Sarwark know that once Gary decides to re-emerge (which he'll have to do at some point) that Altucher would be the perfect media outlet for him (and James, if you are listening here, please contact me about the 2018 convention in New Orleans - I'm involved in the organization & you'd be an ideal participant!)... After a week of thought, this interview strikes me as an elaborate argument for being a deadbeat dad. Families provide stability. The most important responsibility of a parent is to be there for their children. Moving every month is not conducive to a stable environment. Nick, out of fairness, you should interview this guys ex-wife. I'll bet she doesn't find him so amusing.

I agree with him on college. I went to a private college to avoid paying for the liberal arts and mandatory crap that standard institutions force on you, but even that was useless. I think a community college is ok, if it took revenue from other sources than property tax, or go to standard trade or business schools. Colleges are good for hard sciences, but the humanities create a lazy social class of self righteous narcissists. The best artists and composers are autodidacts or people who could have done just as well without college.
@nicholasruff8354

"Colleges are good for hard sciences, but the humanities create a lazy social class of self righteous narcissists." I love sweeping generalizations as much as the next guy, but would you care to explain how the humanities are at fault for this? Laziness, self-righteousness, and narcissism can and do occur with or without education. Just look at Donald Trump. As an instructor in the humanities with a deep appreciation for all branches of knowledge, I'm inclined to believe that the humanities are just as important as the sciences, and believe the humanities have a tendency to reduce the ego rather than inflate it
@thomtaylor5495
@thomtaylor5495 7 жыл бұрын
Humanities are DEFINITELY important. I think James simply argues that the same/similar education in this area can be better accomplished without college, at a fraction of the cost. This would actually HELP the advances of human understanding, rather then saddle graduates with debt that they will never recover from - which creates a cynicism about the humanities that is actually destructive.

+thom taylor, I agree that college tuition is a crime. It's really a shame that people are foregoing a liberal education because of money, but that's unfortunately what the world runs on. I'm one of the debt-saddled former students you speak of, so I definitely sympathize. I just think the cynicism should be directed at the system, not at the disciplines.

Life isn't meant to be a happy experience. Living arrangements are always precarious, whether we like to think they are or not. If you rent, you never know if you may be kicked out for some reason or the company will go out of business. If you "own," you are utterly dependent on the stability of your employment. Employment is almost never that stable. "Here today, gone tomorrow," as they say.

@It's Matt, Question: Have you ever had as much money or even half of what James had made and blew?!? Do you have, or ever had, a family that depends on you to support them, finacially? Many people during the depression and recessions became depressed, then, committed suicide when they lost their life's savings and their homes. It may be easy to make a statement such as yours if you didn't have much to lose in the first place. 🙌🙌🙌😺

This man keeps contradicting himself! He attended college and then took a job in the field. AND then made millions from work he did within the field. Now he's preaching no college. I agree that some degrees are useless but I am strongly pro-college, especially if you can attend for free! And he's against homes but that is due to his own bad choices. He had $50M in cash but couldn't pay for a home in cash so that he wouldn't lose it when times got tough? People listening to this message should critically examine it before taking it as gospel!

@billiebillie, For one thing, it would be great to read comments based on what people 'actually' said__James is not "against" college altogether, he's against racking up a 30+ year DEBT for an education you can get without the debt! Where, btw, can you attend college "for free", not counting scholorships which are not available to everyone?! As regards his stance on buying a home__what he is actually referring to is, many people have been "conditioned" to believe buying a home is an "investment", which it, most certainly, is not! All he's trying to do is give people the numbers, based on his own mistakes, so they can better calculate what they want for themselves, hence, his book, "Choose Yourself", what's so horrible about that?! 🙌🙌🙌😺
