I don't agree that getting fans involved is great tactic. At least not the way James did it. He made it look like he had no ideas of his own, he wanted fans to do creative work for free. Also product design is usually done months in advance, you need to predict the trends, fans are usually about what is trendy now. If you don't have vision for your brand then why launch it, the market is already over saturated.

Instead of someone like James, I wish Robert Welsh would release a makeup line. He’s pretty much the only makeup influencer I follow. He actually made me feel more interested in makeup during the pandemic. I’d sit in my room and follow his tutorials just to relax and unwind. He gave me that spark for makeup that no other influencer has. If anyone is deserving of their own line, it’s Robert Welsh.

his time has passed. he didn't know how to reinvent himself and the scandals he's involved in are too serious and too horrible to ignore, i think. also, influencers brands are so outdated. their makeup style have always been ugly and not practical for the avarage consumer/makeup user imo. the current trends are about natural, soft matte makeup, that's possibly the only good thing to come out from this pandemic. natural looking people, makeup that looks good in real life and not just pictures with heavy editing.

I know people have been on the skincare lately since Covid and makeup trends are much more natural but I do see makeup coming back and being as much of a trend. People love buying things and I think it’ll sway back

I do really think the beauty community and makeup in general is going to have a very hard time coming back completely. In my state tons of stores, hospitals and schools still require masks. Because of that I basically gave up on makeup besides mascara. It's just too much of an annoyance trying to keep it looking perfect and taking a mask on and off constantly. I think the main problem with KZfaq is short form video is the new craze and it seems many KZfaq communities struggle with making something with content but also short without burning out. A gaming KZfaqr I used to watch was complaining about that recently that he's so sick of having to make multiple short form videos a day to keep up with tik tock. I personally prefer longer more meaningful videos I hope that style doesn't fizzle out completely.

Thinking about it, it's not too surprising that the beauty industry is sparking up again. Yes the pandemic killed make-up sells for obvious reasons and people have started to heavily back down on over spending on make-up. But it's 2023 now - a lot of the make-up people have left now is probably loosing quality (if not completely expired) and/or scraping the bottom of the pan. Plus, people are probably more likely to go with a couple expensive make-up items if it means that it will last them a long time, so they don't have to consistently buy drugstore makeup that is yes more affordable, but might not give them the results that they want or might have less quantity that another product that's $20 more.

Inflation is high and disposable income is a luxury many simply don't have.

Meredith Roxbury is really stunning. But I don't follow any of these influencers anymore. I like James Welsh for skincare vids, John Maclean (bc his style of makeup artistry is top notch), Hindash (another professional makeup artist), Lisa Elridge, and personally, I love Skelotim, he does reviews on makeup & skincare, and hauls & anti-hauls, he has a great sense of humor & I love his honesty. There's a much smaller influencer named Supra that I enjoy also. I also follow Trixie Mattel, Violet Chachki and Juno Birch. All are drag queen performers whose styles I have always appreciated. All of them have a unique look. But that is a handful of people in the influencer sphere. Everyone else generally gives me sell out, cash grab to the max, vibes.

I think a lot of people are saying he missed the boat not because he actually has but because it feels like he shouldn’t have the chance to be successful after his criminal behaviour. Unfortunately it seems to be that a large enough portion of his fans have forgiven him AND if he manages to get a deal with a bricks and mortar store to sell his products, he may very well pick up revenue from people who see the brand but don’t know his history. Also, people are getting back into make up again and if a new brand launches that has a good price point and interesting products, then there’s a solid chance that brand could find some success over the next 2-5 years.
