Here's a snippet taken from the "Pedal Approach: Calf Muscles Or Shin Muscles?" lesson on my website in which I analyze the two approaches and explain which is my favorite approach and why.

Just to make it clear, to create this movement, it is necessary to engage both the calf muscle and the shin muscles. The shin muscles are responsible for flexion (raising the foot) and the calf muscles are responsible for extension (lowering the foot) you can't do an up and down, pushing and pulling motion without engaging both muscle groups. In order to get full potential out of the motion, it is best to train both muscle groups to work together. This will increase range of motion in the movement, thus increasing power of the stroke.

This is what Ive been thinking aswell, it has to be a combination right?? Its so tricky because it feels like the information on internet is so much x vs x..
@YigitAcik
@YigitAcik Жыл бұрын
I think what they meant is the ratio between muscle groups I am not an expert on this topic but it feels like this, when you lift your leg up and your ankles are floating in natural position (idle, lets call it 0 position) if you lift your toes up (position +1) you use mostly your shins like %70 shins and %30 calves (numbers are arbitrary) and if your toes go down (to -1 position) from natural 0 / idle position then your calves are like %70 and shins %30 but you always use both this is how i think of it, in order not to get your shins burnout quickly you need to learn to utilize and syncronize to spring (james always highlights this) I personaly find its easier to use mostly calves under 185 bpm , and bigger percentage of shins above 185

@@YigitAcik Yeah, beautifully put, I think ive come to the same conclusion doing some experementing, i love the part about being synchronized with the pedal, that approach is game changer for me atleast already. I just got a little confused when this topic becomes x vs x, and in reality its alil of both but as you say, the percantage of what needs to happen changes depending on the situation

Thank you so much, James! My personal feeling is that compared to the technique that only use the calf muscle, using the shin muscle gives me more energy and control over the pedal. The sound is solid enough even without a trigger.

Very cool video, that helps me pursue the “heel down”, wide motion exercises I’m currently doing. I’ve slowed down in BPM whilst doing it (compared to heel up, calf muscle), and it burns, but I can feel something good happening in the feet and legs.And thank you James, another reminder to relax! damn, it’s hard to relax sometimes. :-)

I've been playing drums for about 20 years, but never ventured much into the extreme metal scene (just because I was mostly a casual basement drummer) - but I recently joined a black metal project, and after watching your videos, my double bass BPM (consistent play for an entire song) is up to 180bpm, and I can also now blast beat at 200bpm (two feet) nonstop and completely cleanly. Something about the way you explained controlling our muscles through practice in this video made it click for me, and I was able to feel the motion needed to achieve these things rather than focus so hard on every single stroke. It's like I move my entire body as one with the beat, rather than focusing on every single individual limb and stroke. Idk, something about this video helped me a lot and thank you. What is the best way to support you?

Thank you for the nice video! I used to do 180 using shin muscle technique only 25 years ago . I recently wanted to start playing again after all this years but realized I totally lost my ability to do it. I can do 130 bpm for 10 min no problem but trying for a month spending an hour to practice every day still no improvement. Do you have any suggestions how to recover and go back to 180 without struggling.

Developing the movement of the ankle motion, my calf muscles do not hurt, as I have already read a thousand times in the comments, apparently I somehow unconsciously choose to play like you, James, with the muscles of the lower leg

Hi James! I've recently started to deal with the ankle technique after watching your vids. Thanks a lot, they are all very helpful. Now I'm able to play with ankle technique with controll at max 130 bpm, I'm relaxed and my motion is synchronized with the pedal. So I think I understand the substance of the technique. My problem is that I'm still much slower with this technique than with full leg motion. Do you think that I'm doing something wrong, or I should be patient, keep practicing and speed will come with time? Thanks a lot! Adam

Yes, that's a great step to work on the ankle motion, it forces you to work with the pedal and the rebound instead of against it.

Hey man. Loving your videos. I've really been trying to work on playing without a spring (using tama dyna-sync) but I'm still finding it almost impossible. The pedal just gets stuck at the bottom (I'm good at not burying the beater, but all the moment dies at the bottom of the stroke before I get any more notes happening. I'm amazed you can control it so well.

Thanks James. I have a question about the heel up ankle technique. You have mentioned that you need to free the ankles to perform this motion, in order to do this does the thigh have to be parallel to the hip or slightly lower?
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Domenic! It's ok to have it parallel or slightly lower. just make sure you don't have it over the hip or that is too low compared to the hip. You can check my video on balance in which I explain this more in detail :)

Is it just a matter of time and repeated practice before your shin muscles stop burning or is the fact that I can’t play this way for very long more of a bad technique thing?
@JamesPayneDrums
@JamesPayneDrums 3 жыл бұрын
Usually it's because you have tension in your feet or toes, try to relax them as much as possible while doing this motion. Your body will surely have to also get used to it, but that's like 30% of the issue, if you feel burning after 10/15 seconds, you have tensions that you have to relax, if it starts after 60 seconds is a matter of training the muscle :)
@metapod666
@metapod666 3 жыл бұрын
James Payne Thanks for the response! I was also wondering something else about playing heel up like this: is your hip flexor supposed to be engaged and lifting your leg up a little so your foot is suspended or is the hip flexor supposed to be totally relaxed and disengaged?

I think I play with shin muscles and never noticed. I’m just curious, are you saying with this technique you must use swivel when reaching tempos like 230 or not necessarily?
@Lu-ql
@Lu-ql Жыл бұрын
Yes, because of how small the shin muscles are, they're going to basically need some "help" from other muscles (like the calf muscles), or you'll need to do some sort relaxation technique, like the swivel. But from my own experience, you can easily play 200bpm with just your shin muscles for quite a long time before you start feeling fatigue. It's only when you get to 220-230 for longer periods of time, that you'll get fatigue faster.
@ronytomano
@ronytomano Жыл бұрын
@@Lu-ql thanks for the insight dude! Yeah I think I’m using a combination of muscles or switching techniques when I need to. I’m always playing heel up though and I used to do some swivel but now just started keeping it heel up and ankle motion (I think). I’m learning that the more you pay attention to HOW you’re doing things the more efficient you can do them

You're Marthyn jovanovic's dark alter ego. You even look a bit like him but promote the opposite technique. Honestly what I would like to know is how do you gain enough stamina with the shin muscle because for me control is good but the muscle dies on me in a few seconds. It just burns too much. Is it possible for everyone to reach a point where you can last a long time using it?

I used this shin ankle motion about 10 years ago. I saw huge improvements when I spent my practicing on a Roland TD-something bass drum pad, which has fairly low rebound with just rubber surface, at home and then switched to a high tension 20 inch bass drum in rehearsals. I was flying super fast, talking 250, 260, extremely loud and with good endurance. Without any mics or triggers, my bass drum was almost louder than the guitars in the practice room. And I was not using any intentional swivel. Just maximum power shin strokes. But it needs constant practice to keep at this level. Guessing the swivel will allow you to practice less for same results, but my right knee really does not like swiveling.

I'm just having better luck with Marthyns calf technique. It seems like I almost have it working except that my right leg is not fully under control yet. With the shin muscle technique I can do it but very slow.

"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham
