CD/DVD liner note from James - One Man Band (2007):
“It’s a strange reality of the modern popular song that the first time it’s played is when it’s recorded. Sometimes a song will be finished for deadline in the studio the day the thing is cast in stone forever. I know that songs and arrangements evolve and develop over time; that somewhere around the twentieth time it’s played for a live audience, a song finally completes itself. That, among other things, is what makes a good live recording unique. I’ve often thought that live performance means being well prepared and then waiting for the inevitable, unexpected thing to happen. We come onstage, well rehearsed and in good shape, and repeat what we have done before as best we can. But the real goal is to be in the present moment and on the surface of ourselves; open and trusting. Nobody wants to be perfect: that’s frozen, dead…It’s “be here now”, I guess…
Of course, ‪@larrygoldings‬ does more than just accompany me. His growing presence in the world of jazz is well acknowledged, both for his own recordings and live performances and as a member of a good number of team efforts. I tend to form musical (and personal) relationships with other players and then stick with them for years. @Arnold McCuller and David Lasley have worked with me since the mid-‘70s and others nearly as long (Jimmy Johnson, Steve Gadd, Mike Landau, Kate Markowitz, Valerie Carter…)
After my great friend, producer and pianist Don Grolnick died in ’96, I performed with a number of excellent keyboard players. It was during the recording of my October Road album in ’02 that I worked with Larry. Russ Titelman had booked him to play on “Mean Old Man” along with Steve Gadd on drums, Jimmy Johnson on bass, Clifford Carter on synth, and the fine seven-string jazz guitarist, @John Pizzarelli . This was an incredible band, and after hearing Larry Goldings’ solo on that song, first time through, he pinned it. That was our introduction and he’s been my first call ever since.
Then there’s the bus factor. You see, someone’s playing may be great, but what’s it going to be like spending 10 hours a day riding to the next gig with them for a couple of months? Larry’s Bus Factor is not a factor for he is a bus riding fool, for a fact.
Part of his talent is his ability to “split his hands.” Though not as painful as it sounds, it does require great focus and skill to play a melody/accompaniment with his right hand and, with his left hand, (often on another keyboard) play a distinct bass pattern. This Larry can do with effortless grace, and he has made this One Man Band show possible. He is a committed father, brother, and son, and I am in his debt. Larry Goldings is my One Man Band.” - James Taylor

LYRICS
Sweet Baby James by James Taylor
There is a young cowboy lives on the range
His horse and his cattle they’re his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Just waiting for summer his pastures to change
Yes, and as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Just thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the dogies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but it’s clear
Just as if maybe someone could hear
He says good night all you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues for the colors I choose
Won’t you let me go down in my dreams
Oh, and rockabye sweet baby James
Now the first of December it was covered with snow
Yes, and so was the Turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Oh, the Berkshires seemed dreamlike
On account of that frosting
With 10 miles behind me and 10,000 more to go, you know
There’s a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to sleep
Just that singing seemed to work fine for me
So, good night all you moonlight ladies
Rockabye my sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues for the colors I choose
Won’t you let me go down in my dreams
Oh, and rockabye my sweet baby James "

My mom and dad separated in '69. I was 8 years old. My mom packed up an old '52 Dodge and drove from Illinois to Florida while I stay with grandparents. Almost s month into 1970, a man knocked on our door and my mom said there's a package for you. I ripped it open to find a stereo 8-track tape deck that my dad had sent for Christmas. And in the box, one single stereo tape. It was Sweet Baby James. I've been in love with this album and JT himself ever since. Grateful.

Shit happens. Get used to it and hope that nothing worse than that happens to you. Believe me I know that it can get much worse. I was happy when my parents divorced because all they did was beat the shit out of each other, and I had to watch it for most of my childhood. My teenage years weren't much better and I really don't like being here anymore.

I got introduced to it in the late 60's older brother bought an album , not sure which one, but I was hooked. Loved my rock and roll but loved it and the cat Steven's after that , still love the rock and roll but also the jt, cs. And so many great musicians of the day@now days I just shake my head at most new music? Or so they like to call it! Sad! Glad I lived thru the 60&70's I was born in the mid 50's youngest of a big family, a sister born in the early 40's , I was her live doll@ listen to all old music@ so glad , most now days , suck!

@@AbbyNormal777 You strike me as a child who yearned for attention- not one who desperately tried to be invisible. Whatever the case I hope other people’s pain won’t always look like a challenge for you to top with some story forever and you’ll grow up and be normal one day. Good luck with everything but I’ll definitely advise you stop trying to out-pain everyone else. That won’t win you any fans.

It seems that I have been listening to this song all of my life, and now it suddenly occurs to me that that is true. I am amazed at how many of your songs have formed a backdrop to my life. It's as if my life wouldn't have been the same without your music. It's been a great ride so far, and as you say "it ain't over ...yet!". Thanks James for being such a musical presence for my life.

The second verse of this song captures why I made Massachusetts my home in 1974. I've been making that drive on the Turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston for nearly 50 years, and that phrase "the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting" still brings tears to my eyes. They do indeed seem dreamlike in the winter. "Ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go" -- as I approach 70, I realize just how profound that line truly is. Thank you, Mr. Taylor.

I used to sing this to my first born, we also named him James (not because of Taylor- it was a family name and we had two wonderful friends named this as well). Every time I hear this I can seen in my mind and feel in my arms the miracle that was that baby. Although I had 5 other babies the impact that small human made on my life changed me from a young naive somewhat self absorb woman(as we all are when we're young) into a fierce, but grateful mama bear. I didn't understand then, but I understand now 44 years later it was the most pivotal experience of my life. I have never been the same (thank you, Lord).

Growing up my Dad would sing this song and when I was in my senior year of high school I finally had the opportunity to sit down and appreciate this song. Fast forward to my last months of college, this song is so nostalgic, it reminds me of the years before my Mom began her battle with Lyme Disease. Life looks a little different now when the family gets together because there are still things that my Mom can no longer do. This song makes me miss the days my Mom didn't have pain with everything she did.

James Taylor whereas other musicians may change and evolve to different styles, ups and downs during their respective careers for better or worse, I've always said that it's you that has remained at a constant of brilliance from your earliest beginnings to the present. You are the same bright shining light that I could immediately see when I first heard you as you are now. Never wavering and staying true to your craft, your gift to us. I can't speak for anyone else but I take a lot of comfort in that. Just knowing that I can always expect you to be as wonderful now as I've ever known you to be gives me such a peaceful feeling. Thanks James. Thanks for sharing your beautiful gift of music with us all. Thanks for never compromising your talent by trying to change your style of music to something that was never meant to be like so many others who took that chance and ending up falling by the wayside.

Inspiring me to play and sing, which I di for both my boys, the younger one who now plays guitar and is still in love with the "good old classic folk music". He also won't cut his hair. Thanks for your contribution to what I believe God put in all of us, music to lift the soul.

I was born in 1968. 😊 I sang this song to my kids at bedtime in the 90’s and am still singing it to my grandkids in the ‘20’s. Amazing the life one song can have and the memories it can give and bring. Thanks JT. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world. I, for one, am really glad you did.

To me there are only two types of music. Timely( Meaning for the moment a hit song that will fade away after it drops off the charts) and TIMELESS- a song that lives on. Most of JT's catologue qualifies for the latter- timeless and lives in our hearts and minds forever. Certainly this is just one of the many songs TJ has written- another timeless classic!

I like to think I was one of the first ones to hear this song I was a freshman in college in 1969/70 and James Taylor performed at the club on the college. He did songs from his first album and some from his soon to be released 2nd album " Sweet Baby James "!

Reminds me of my little brother James. He was born at a time in my life where I was all about myself, and he is the last child so he wasn't given as much attention as me blah blah blah that whole thing. Great song!

I don't know why... but this song always brings tears to my eyes. Sometimes when I can't sleep I listen to this song in hopes it'll make me sleepy. Instead, my husband finds me in the living room an hour later crying and dancing in the dark. I can listen to this on repeat for hours. We don't have kids yet, but I told I'm if we have one... boy or girl... that child will be named James so I can play this for them. It is my all time favorite song. And when I go in the ground... I want this song playing

I crooned my girlfriend in the early 90s who became my wife singing James Taylor songs by the fireplace because I could sing along with the CD playing. I could stay in sync because the lyrics were stored in my head. I'm thinking it was the lyrics and not my voice that made the difference. 😁 Thank you James Taylor.
