I love my fx3. Compared to my previous road bikes, the big tires give plenty of cushion. My roads are mostly flat, so I thought the lighter carbon versions would be overkill for what I need. If I was doing more climbs and longer rides, I would totally go for the carbon models. Trek gives a lot for the money.

I like that brands are building these higher spec'd hybrid bikes. As a bigger guy I like that there is room for bigger tires as well. The extra cushion is nice. I have the specialized sirrus x 4.0 with the future shock and it been great rolling 38 or 42mm tires!

Yes indeed, I used to have the 2021 specialized sirrus 4.0 and the 6.0 all carbon and they were bomb proof..lol..It was quick, could handle bigger tires, nimble, and was an all around bike..the 6.0 with a swapped out crank(shimano 105/ultegra)& carbon rovals wheels could easily stay with a roadbike..trek should of made these FX bikes with a thru axle..

I test rode the FX Sport 4 yesterday.. and it is so light, rigid and responsive. I think it's the perfect bike for someone that likes a road bike but wants some comfort... but it's a road bike... reminds me a little of the Cannondale Quick Speed or 1. The head angle makes it turn in very quickly. It's so stiff that every input is applied. Pushing on the pedal converts to straight line acceleration.. and then ride quality is somehow magically smooth and compliant.. it's all the good stuff about carbon. But it wasn't for me because I like more of a mountain bike 'feel'.. I need a slacker head tube angle... and I wasn't nuts about feeling the shifting, which sounded/felt odd... kind of crunchy on the bike I rode. It used the Deore 10sp setup... which I have on another bike, where it shifts a little better.. might've needed adjustment. Overall, I thought there was nothing even close value-wise for $1700. Great bike... just not for me.

James, a great and thorough review. As you pointed out, the bikes are coming out with Promax brakes despite advertising the much better Shimano mt 201 on their website. The Promax are inferior I think. They also eliminated the iso speed decoupler to save money, added three pounds and priced it almost $200 higher than a similar spec’d and more road oriented 2021 4x. My guess is the Specialized Sirrus x series is the target.

The x1 drivetrain is a huge disadvantage. Jamesthebikeguy says "Trek has revamped its FX sports series...." unfortunately this revamp hasn't worked. I've had countless hours of power riding on the previous FX 5 sports model; what a super bike that was, but sadly a car smashed my front fork. By comparison the 2022 model is a sloth. It must mainly be down to the drivetrain. I'm now seeing if I can put my old x2 drivetrain on this 2022 model: if not I'm selling.

Seems to be a lot of hate on this in the comments, I’m someone who bought a FX Sport 5 and really enjoy riding it. I prefer to ride my MTBs but I ride 4 to 5 times a week and my after work training tends to be on the bike paths accessible from my house. Many of my riding friends only ride road and I wanted a bike to ride with them on the 40 mile group rides, we also have some local and not so local gravel roads that I show up on….so this Trek looked like a do all I want bike with flat more comfortable position. I have neck issues from my career and drop bars are painful. I didn’t buy this bike to impress or depress anyone I bought it because it checks the boxes for me, however every person who has inspected this fx5 has thought it is a very cool looking ride. The bike manufacturers are exploiting the consumer demand, shipping out way to much abroad, and using non-spec parts to put a bike on the market but that’s our current world. I have bought 3 new bikes in the last year and only because my local dealer is trustworthy and loyal to their customers.

It’s a gorgeous bike, for sure, but I still feel like they should have kept the road version of the fx sport. You can see it even in the fx 3 and 4 with the deore drivetrains that trek is slowly diving into the gravel craze, and I’m not such a big fan of it, as I’m sure some other people also won’t be. I think it's an interesting bike but I don't see the need to have carbon models. If you're in the market for a carbon bike you're typically looking to reduce weight. For the same price you can get an X caliber 9 that's slightly heavier (swapping to a rigid front fork should offset that difference and if you wanted faster gears just change to a larger front ring) but far more capable and comfortable or an aluminum checkpoint that will be able to do everything the FX sport does and is 2-3 pounds lighter.

Bullshit! Some of the very worst riding bikes are CF bikes. There is nothing about CF that makes it ride better or smoother than a properly designed alloy bike. Nothing. You’re just reciting CF manufacturer marketing bullshit! And CF’s an incredibly non-eco friendly material to make things with. It takes almost 15 times the raw energy to produce the same amount of raw CF as it does to produce most alloys. Producing CF is one of the very worst materials as far as its greenhouse gas impact, and it is a material that is very costly to recycle and therefore almost none of it gets recycled. It just goes to landfills and sits there for a very long time before breaking down.

I could also go tubeless and maybe take the tire pressure down or go to the carbon wheelset. Althought i might as well get the 6 if I'm going to do that. Thoughts? Thanks for the review!

You failed to mention that this year's FX Sport 5 is essentially last year's FX4 Sport [same gear set, color, derailleur] but for one big omission - for this year they dropped the Rear Iso-Speed seat suspension which flattens out the bumps and is something standard on the high end Domanes. In essence, they put on wider tires but de-conted the bike. That's a shame.

The weight did seem quite high for a carbon and especially with it being in a 1x set up. The other option you'd have with gearing on the 1x would be to swap the front ring for something like 38 tooth only real time you'd spin out on it would be descending (26ish mph at 90RPM) and it gets you down to a 0.9 gear ratio.

@@scottrivkin3307 funny, I'm in the same position as you were. I half seriously went into trek store right outside my neighborhood not intending on buying anything since I already had a mountain bike from Costco in mind. Checked out and rode a couple of their bikes. After the test ride I was like there's no way I'm spending $700 or $1000 on a bike. After that night I started looking into these bikes along with the competition... And now I'm like is $2000 enough for what I think I want? 🤣 Anyways, the components you have are probably pretty good except for the lack of the Shimano branding on some stuff. I'd love to have 2023 frame with 2021 FX4 components. But I guess that would be the 2023 FX Sport 5 in a way. Lol. I really like the 2023 frame, it's beefy! Enjoy your ride.

I got the FX3 Disc and I am in 30 day period. But what i find dificult is when i go to a slight bit of gravel i find difficult to balance. I am wondering if Sport can mitigate it. Also, how does the fat tires impact the speed. Will that be balanced out due to ligher frame? This is my first bike though.
@link-world
@link-world 2 жыл бұрын
What is the tire width of your FX3? You may want to decrease the amount of pressure in your tires to handle loose gravel better. If that doesn't work, you may want to upgrade your tires to a larger width. If still within your 30 day return period, you might want to trade up to an FX with larger tires, if larger than your current setup. Larger width tires will always impact speed. It's a trade off that you have to consider. Do you want to be faster with narrow tires or more confident on different terrain with wider tires?

Get some advice. I was riding very loose gravel on 35 mm tyres. I was slipping around on loose gravel. I converted to tubeless tyres at 40 mm. Tubeless means you can run at much lower pressures. Should get more traction

I’m not worried about the weight, it’s the ride that’s amazing! If you have ever used aluminum hiking poles and then tried carbon, the reduction in vibration is incredible. If you got promax on the fx sport 5 you should be refunded money. They basically gave those when they had a shortage on parts. You’re paying for shamano parts not cheaper promax parts that came with the 4. You really should’ve mentioned that. They are not equal by any sense and as a review the bike should get a hit to the score for Trek doing that.

I always liked Trek because their bikes fit me like a glove with very little adjustment, but some of their design choices boggle my mind. Swapping out the normal 12mm front and rear thru-axles for the "thru-skew" and removing the Iso-speed (from the previous model) were nothing more than cost-cutting measures. They updated the geometry and tire clearance, but regressed in compliance and overall upgradability. This is the same company that came up with the bogus 141 QR boost standard that is still almost impossible to find a solid upgraded rear wheel for (outside of having one built). I love Trek, but they're always being weirdos to save a few pennies. Only thing positive (I guess) about it is that they do it on bikes that don't have an enthusiast crowd, so the backlash is minimal.

I agree. i was able to compare a 2021 and a 2022 FX 4 Sport carbon model side by side. Frame on the 2022 is much beefier and with the wider tires ( and wheels ? ) the weight for a 2022 model is over 2 pounds heavier. IMHO if you want a fitness bike to ride strictly on pavement you are much better off buying a 2021 model. It has more of a road bike feel but with a flat bar. If you want to go off the beaten path a bit, then the 2022 model might be a better choice. MSRP for a 2021 is $1819 and for a 2022 is $1699.

As soon as you said “carbon frame” - I’m out. Lovely bike, I just don’t like carbon bikes, as in my opinion, they’re just not as durable and long lasting as alloy. And c’mon, who’s going to tell the difference whilst riding to work / using it for fitness. Also, the inherent design failure with carbon - it’s not recyclable, and it all just ends up in landfill.
@ivanboesky1520
@ivanboesky1520 2 жыл бұрын
Not only is CF very difficult and costly to recycle it is also about 15 times greater to produce as far as the raw energy consumed to make it and the greenhouse emissions needed to manufacture it versus steel and other alloys. From a pure environmental standpoint it’s hard to find a more non-eco friendly material to fabricate things with. In addition, over 20% of the raw CF scrap waste produced in the manufacturing of CF objects never gets recycled at all. It goes directly to landfills where it’s life to decay is extradordinarily long. That’s why I get a laugh at all the ignorant bozos claiming they are doing soooo much for the environment on their silly overpriced and incredibly environmentally unfriendly CF cookie cutter rides. Especially the clowns running out to buy the “latest and greatest” CF bike with CF wheels every year. But loads of humans are really stupid creatures when you cut through all their BS. 😀😀

Yep…I have to laugh at all the casual cyclists who feel they “need” carbon fiber because they believe the BS the cycling industry has fed them! The vast majority of cyclists couldn’t tell the difference between steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon unless someone was telling them what differences they should be feeling!
