Dysphoria is a trans person being uncomfortable with body parts and pronouns and not everyone experiences dysphoria in the same way. By using the wrong pronouns she would sort of get a feeling of dysphoria because she isn’t being called what she wants to. It would have the same effect without her actually having dysphoria.

@@carlsonraywithers3368 I said respecting a human’s basic dignity, not respect as you’re talking about it. There’s a difference. I don’t have to respect transphobes because in my eyes they haven’t earned it in the slightest. But that doesn’t mean I won’t treat them with basic human dignity. The thing about transphobes is that lots of them won’t do the same for me! Now about my confederacy analogy. The confederates DID NOT treat their slaves with basic human dignity. I don’t need to tell you that. Transphobes, while yes, not to the degree of enslavement, also don’t respect my basic human dignity as I already mentioned. That was the point of my comment.

Misgendering someone in French class is evil. It's not just the pronouns: everything in French in gendered (binarily, at that). Or at least, all the adjectives are. If you only use the correct name you're essentially doing nothing if you then go on to call the other person "Heureuse" when they're actually "heureux"and "belle" when they're really "beau".

Some people started ussing the -e at the end of the nouns and adjetives instead of the usual -o (masculine form) or -a (femenine form) example: children -chicas (fem plural) -chicos (masc plural) -chiques (neutral plural) BUT since most of spanish speaking countries uses the guides from the RAE (Real Aademia de la lengua Española/Royal Academy of the Spanish language) and this institution (and A LOT OF PEOPLE) its against the use of "inclusive" language (cause tradition) its reaaaaaaally hard to make any (significative) progress. @@PutoMedicoBrujo in brazillian portuguese some ppl are also trying to use the -e at the end to make it neutral, but unfortunatelly the "x" instead of "a" or "o" has been so far spread amongst the people who are willing to make that change that you see it everywhere instead of the -e. it's kind of upsetting bc the "e" is actually fit for nb ppl who prefer those pronous, and also for ppl who have a hard time reading words with an "x" for various reasons as far as i've heard, so the fact that you refuse to use it in text, and therefore adheres to a form of neutrality that isn't fit for speaking makes it seem like you either don't know much about the subject anyway. idk if those changes are being discussed academically and officially, so i can't say if there's an institutional power against it, but i suppose it isn't being discussed bc everyone is settled with the "x" which isn't very appropriate. it's gonna take a while for ppl to start actually saying words with "e", and since we're not on that level yet i don't think it'll be recognized anytime soon. though i admit i don't use that in speech either, and when texting i often try to neutralize the phrase instead of using the "e". maybe i should do my part and start to normalize it. either way, sorry for the long comment as well, this is an interesting topic

I’m gonna say this. As a trans (FTM) when I came out to my three friends, I was met with mostly positivity. Two of them (both cis, but LGBTQ+, one is hindu and the other is non-religious) respected me and supported me. The third friend (christian, cis, and hetero) simply said “okay.” For a while, she would be uncomfortable if the topic of LGBTQ+ was brought up, but she STILL RESPECTED MY NAME/PRONOUNS!! The worst thing she ever said to me was that she didn’t understand why I would want to be different. Since then, she has become much more accepting of the topic, and only discriminates against me if she is around her parents or my parents (she lets me know beforehand as well!) I have another friend as well, who is Islamic. As most people know, Muslims cannot support LGBTQ+. But, they can respect it. Meaning. That Islamic people can still use someone’s preferred name/pronouns. It’s not okay to discriminate no matter your religious beliefs, your personal beliefs, etc. just call someone he, she, they, xe, ze, co, thon, whatever pronouns they use and respect their name! *_IT’S NOT THAT HARD_*

I get that gender is a social construct, but so is race I think, meaning that the concept of "transracial" should be validated as well? I'm just asking to understand whether it's something I should respect the way I respect changing genders, because I've always felt it to be a nonsensical concept.

Actual definition is: abusive or threatening speech or writing that expresses prejudice against a particular group, especially on the basis of race, religion, or sexual orientation. Usually hate speech will naturally fall into a hate crime (but not always). Because of this its hard to prove and seek justice legally. So like, the new indepedent fundamentalist baptist group that advocates for the capital punishment (ie government can just put you to death) of lgbt individuals is hate speech. There's no way the French teacher just "avoided using pronouns or gendering the student" because it's impossible to teach French (and many other languages) without gendering someone in your speech. What's worse is there's no neutral gender in French, you typically use masc instead, so this guy would literally be going out of his way to be obtuse. (for no reason) He may be able to avoid it in English, largely thanks to neutral speech, but there's just no way this teacher was able to avoid it with French. Wow. He's really banking on people not knowing how other languages, particularly French, work. Gender is woven into the very nature of the language itself, not just the obvious pronoun portion. It changes a number of factors when you speak or write. The concept he magically avoided it is laughably bad. Edit: Oh man 1k likes is the most I've ever had! asdfghjkl! Thanks guys! Remember it's not hard for a language teacher to stick with your preferred pronoun whether they like it or not.Their whole job is to help you learn things, not to control every aspect of your existence. I grew up with the same concept only in Hebrew, Danish, and Spanish. We generally just use masc pronouns, no prob. Using the masc as a default for neutral groups is seen as normal. It's honestly not much of an issue when you're used to thinking that way in the first place if that makes any sense. It's just different. idk. I wouldn't say we're screwed either. I personally don't even think about it tbh. It would be like trying to remove neutral pronouns from English: neat, but bizarre. People do still attempt to create personal neutral pronouns though for sure. It just doesn't always stick. (just like with English) Heck. A lot of non-binary LGBT people don't even use them because, as far as many are concerned, something already exists.

An example on how gender linguistically is viewed differently in French: My chair, in French, is gendered as female and I would refer to it that way grammatically too... but it's an inanimate object. Like with people animal names also change depending on their gender, (une chatte VS un chat) but most people will just use the masc. (edit: totally just remembered this, but goats actually take the feminine as their neutral pronoun!) This is part of why I say there's literally no way around gender in French too. I moved states when I was 12, and at my new school this girl didn't like my name because there was another girl with my name who she hated, so she started calling me "Sarah" instead (which btw sounds nothing like my actual name, doesn't even start with the same letter, or anything lol). DewdropKitten most of the time I think people’s reason for not ‘supporting’ trans people is a lack of understanding, and maybe no cis person can understand what it’s feels like to be trans, but just because you don’t understand someone’s identity doesn’t mean you can’t be respectful to them, be kind, and you ARE going to face repercussions for discrimination. E.g. while you are completely free to refuse to hire a woman in the workplace and claim that women should be at home with the kids, that doesn’t mean that you won’t get fired for treating that woman in a discriminatory way. You’re allowed to say that, no one will force you to work with her, no one can, but you may not have a job at the end of it because your actions always have consequences! Idk why it’s so hard for people to understand??

(Long comment): Prager U doesn't understand the importance pronouns have for transgender people. It seems PU thinks transgender people are transgender because they're (supposedly) being needlessly picky about how they identify. I believe PU also thinks transgender people are lying to themselves, considering PU seems to think "gender" exclusively refers to biological sex. That false gender/biological-sex relationship is actually something I was taught as fact as a young kid by a *public-school* employee! She told my class how "gender" is a less-crude way of saying "biological sex," and I had no reason to question that until I was out of school. My religious teachings also didn't help things. I thought more like PU until only recently. I'm really not for policing speech outside of employment...but the *workplace* rules protecting against transgender discrimination are definitely justified. Thank you for enlightening me on this.

My friend's form tutor sent an email to all his teachers saying that they should use he/him and his new name instead of his dead name and she/her. One of his teachers literally took him out of the next lesson he had after the email and said, "I will not do that because you are not a boy, you are a girl". This teacher deadnames and misgenders him every time she talks to him. I also had a teacher in year 7 who told off my amab non-binary friend for wearing eyeliner because "makeup is for girls". It's like, really?! They struggle enough with mental health as it is without you doing this. I just don't get it, it makes no difference to these teacher's lives how students express themselves or which pronouns and name they want you to use . There is no good reason to be deliberately disrespectful to them.

Father works in the training department for a casino. At his last job, at the competing casino, he worked training and hr. One of the security guards at the last place refused to let in and tried to beat a trans woman. She hadn't transitioned medically or with her id. She had a purse, was wearing make up, and was wearing a dress. She, rightfully, took it to hr. The guard was fired, he had done this multiple times, and a new training was made for everyone on how to act around trans people. Fathers making the same training at the new casino. It hasn't happened here yet and there are actually quite a few trans people and lesbians working here. If the guard had stopped at just talking about her behind her back, which is still a sh!tty thing to do, then he wouldnt have gotten fired. That is freedom of speech, even if hateful. He probably would've gotten a talking to but a new entire 2 day training wouldnt have been created. He crossed the line when he got violent. Even just denying entry would've been crossing the line since she was old enough to enter. He got the appropriate consequence with being fired. He wasnt arrested cause I live in a state with the gay and trans panic claus but he probably should've been. This is why I'm scared to be openly gender fluid here. The fact that I can be beaten or killed just because I sometimes identify differently than how I was assigned terrifies me. I'm 14 had have been bullied a lot for just being bi/pan. One day those bullies will be able to buy weapons. When that happens I'll never leave my house because I know this state. We've all heard of the trans woman who was dragged miles down a road tied to the back of a truck then shot. That happened an hour away from where I lived at the time. The world needs to change. A friend of mine had trouble with a professor when I was in film school because she kept misgendering him and kept trying to force him to use his identity in our assignments because “art” or something. I can’t believe how someone could go out of their way to make someone uncomfortable just because they “don’t get it”. He finally told her off (long after I’d left that school) and I’m glad he did.

Something I do when asked about my gentials by an adult is to bring up the fact that they are asking *a minor* about their body, specifically their private parts.. It's nobody's business about what's in your pants aside from maybe your doctor, but that's only for health reasons. I don't like how frequently that question is posed at people who are also just kids. I don't know why they think it's okay because its not.

They want to compare a child's right to not salute the flag to a teacher's right to not say the correct pronouns. The difference is, a flag is an object. It doesn't have rights. Not saluting the flag just means "I choose not to outwardly give a show of patriotism" someoen else's refusal to be patriotic doesn't hurt anyone else. It's ceremonial, it's for show. A child is a person, with an identity, and that teacher refused to respect their identity and rights as a person. It is affecting the child, and (because he kept referring to the child as "she" and "her" instead of "he" and "him" like he'd asked) affecting others to also not respect that child's rights.

When a Pokemon evolves, the trainer addresses them by their new name, even though they're the same pokemon as before. Calling a Charizard Charmander would be ignoring their identity and personal growth they've gone through. So...why can't trans and non-binary people be given the same respect as an evolved being!?

@@rachelcookie321 this however cannot be true. his analogy is incorrect and fallacious because people have simply changed their identity as opposed to the physical changes endured by pokemon which ar significant enough to warrant their new identity, but the human, has simply engaged in believing he is a gender he really isn't

These types of arguments always get my blood boiling because my s/o (calling them sweetheart is the most wonderful thing because their face lights up whenever I do it) recently came out to me as nonbinary and thought I would break up with them (I would never). I've been practicing using their correct pronouns, and I correced myself when talking to my mother. She did not like the fact that I correced her as well because misgendering someone is fundimentally discrimination, and proceeed to tell me that I was wrong and that they were a girl. I was absolutely livid and went off on her saying it was disrespectful and I didn't want to bring up the topic of racial slurs, but in retrospect it would have really helped my argument. I was told by several of my family members that I was being disrespectful to my mother and that she can have her "opinions". I wanted to argue further, but lost my energy and intend to correct her in the future whenever she misgenders my sweetheart. Misgendering *anyone* is unacceptable no matter *who* you are, what your "opinion" is on people who don't identify with their gender assigned at birth is, or what *you* think is acceptable. And it certainly isn't acceptable around *me*. You *can* and *will* be called out and correced.
