Jane Child, released in 1989, was fully written, produced, and performed on the synthesizer (except for the guitar parts) by Child herself, a rarity for a debut artist signed to a major label. Due to her musical style and her emphasis on control over her music, she was at the time labeled by the press as "the female Prince". Best known for the hit single "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1990. The song was also a big hit on the R&B chart, peaking at No. 6, a rarity for a white artist.

I first came to live in NYC 3 years after this came out. The city was pretty much the same as it was in this video. Times Square was seedy, the Meatpacking district had a lively underground, and the Twin Towers stood tall. Can't help but feel nostalgic listening to these beats and watching the cityscape of that era. 🌆🎶🗽

Three glorious weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1990, two of those weeks under another alternative singer, Sinéad O'Connor. Even if the style of "Don't Wanna Fall in Love" seemed to be in line with the moment, Jane Child herself was unknown. The entire eponymous album this comes from has bangers on it ("I Got News for You" is especially good), all so fervently controlled by Child herself. She understood funk, rock, melody, and rhythm. Such a great moment not just for Jane Child, but for those of us enjoying this on the radio. Ain't no personal thing, boy.

She really was. At the time, Jane Child was considered hugely avant-garde. Her nose ring is-it-real-or-clip-on was a big debate in high school! But being considered avant-garde myself then (big time!) I admired her. I wonder why she did not become a bigger star. Perhaps she was ahead of her time.

I view this 89 song (in my own personal opinion) as the last "hurrah" of the iconic 80s synth sound. Many people dismiss this song as just a wacky pop one hit wonder song but The synth work on this song and other songs like Pebbles, "Mercedes Boy", are done so well that I never get tired of listening to any of them. In fact, Jane Child's 1st album where this song is a part of has amazing synth playing and sounds that were iconic 80s sounds. She was a very talented and underated artist. 👍

This came out in May/June 1990 and was played all the time on U.K. radio stations. it reminds me of the long hot sunny summer in London during 1990. This is definitely a last gasp of 1980s sound, and 1990 was still technically an 80s year with a few songs setting the tone for the coming decade. This was played on and off until around 93ish on uk radio, and after that never to be heard again.

Late 80s, synthpop, New York City, every other shot shows a cab , steam drifting up from the manholes, late night shops lit up in neon, street buskers in Times Square, all shot in black and white with some bluescale. Could have been used for the intro credits and theme of a dozen tv shows back in the day.

I'll say it. This song's still kind of a banger. That modulation section at the end is pretty sick!

Too bad she was so tough to market, not only because of her look, but mostly because she wanted to musically be herself. Big record companies don't like that, and yet many hailed her as a female Prince. Hell, even The Purple One dug her a lot. I wonder why nothing came from that...probably that JC and Prince were both control freaks (in a good way). This chick had serious talent. :-/

if she truly had the talent and skill, she would still be creating hits like this, but when you go for a career and only end up with a one hit wonder as genius as this, looks, i repeat looks do not count pal. she could have dressed like a $10 hooker and started her career and the record giants would have signed her up in a second.

One of my favourate songs ever! Still love it all these years later. Unfortunately this was the only track that I liked on the whole cd album it came from. Definitely one of the best one hit wonders in the history of pop. :-)

@@kenrickeason I got blown away by Kid Laroi and Justin Beiber's song 'Stay' recently. Yet, this song just blows anything like that out the water. Very few artists have hit these feels in the 2000s. Perhaps Fall Out Boy and The Weeknd, Chris Brown and Neyo. I can't name many.
