I am old enough that I actually saw her in concert in San Diego shortly before she died. There are no words to describe how soulful and moving it was to hear the songs actually coming out of her instead of a recording! She can only be described as an absolute force of nature!

You are absolutely right that Janis had to be the first female blue-eyed soul artist. She did some rock which was played on the radio back in the day, and even a country-slanted (Me & Bobby McGee) song, but you could just tell her PASSION was the blues, and she was SO good at it.

This lady could sing! Sadly we lost her too soon. She was only 27 when she died. "Me & Bobby McGee" is one of my favorites by her but she had a lot of great songs such as "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Down On Me", "Maybe", "Little Girl Blue", "Ball & Chain", "Summertime", "Try (Just A Little Bit Harder)", "Get It While You Can", "Bye, Bye Baby", "Move Over" & her original song "Mercedes Benz".

haha Janis would be nearly 80 by now. I think she'd have slowed down by now, but in the 80s and 90s she'd have been fabulous. Lovve Janis, best white woman to ever do soul, and probably the first leading white woman of blues and soul.

Man, I love your observations and takes. How many times I watched this performance but never snapped to how she reluctantly let go of the mic before the instrumental. I also never noticed how she had a hard time getting out of the song after she was finished. It almost seems like she felt like she had more to say. The lyrics where she says "we may not be here tomorrow" is prophetic and heart wrenching.

I came here for your reaction to Gabriel Henrique. But I signed up for that reaction. I love so much Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Nina Simone, Otis Redding, and all wonderful singers like these. I grew up listening to these wonderful singers and many others. It seems to be because I'm Brazilian, but my mother loved songs like that. I'm not a singer but I'm passionate about music, good voices, unique styles. 🙏🏻

I would have loved to hear her with a gospel choir. Can you imagine the energy between her and a gospel choir. Check out BALL AND CHAIN. She was abused by the industry who cared nothing for her emotional health. She gave all of herself.

Janis worshipped all the great blues snd soul singers- especially Bessie Smith, Nina, Aretha and Mahalia. She had to leave her Texas town because no one understood or appreciated her. They didn’t agree with her support of Civil Rights either.

I remember an interview where she gave credit to LoUiSiAna especially Lake Charles not far from her hometown for her inspirations and free spirit. Me and Bobby Magee starts off,"Busted flat in Baton Rouge"(LoUiSiAna)! She attended Baton Rouge High School also(I don't know how that happened. Kris Kristofferson wrote Me and Bobby Magee(from Minnesota). Kris hitched around coastal LoUiSiAna and worked in the oilfields. He did some boxing also while there. Kris said she changed(botched)a few lyrics. But she made his song a hit with her rendition so it was all good.(forgiven). He attended her Walk of Fame dedication when she got her star!

You should check out Peggy Lee-Fever. You know the song but of all the amazing singers who’ve sung it, it’s a blond haired, blue eyed white girl that has the best version, imo. Or the most well known. But she’s pre Janis. There’s Judy Garland of course, too.

I think you should react to Melissa Etheridge - the closest to coming to sounding like Janis. “ I’m the Only One”. There’s a great RRHOF video of Melissa, recovering from cancer with a bald head, singing “Piece of My Heart”. It’s phenomenal.

She was bullied at school, I think in her last year book they said that she was the ugliest boy in the school. They were so mean to her because she wasn’t the classic 50s girl. But man her Authenticity just added to her beauty. Terrible loss to the music world. No one compares to her.

Janis is #1 forever. And Joe Cocker did the same for men. Then... then Robert Plant copied Janis's style and knocked Joe into #2.... still my personal fave 3 Blues Rockers EVER. Mind you a guy called Marriott (Plant's fave singer) wants in. And Beth Hart too. Peace from Canada.

If you make a reaction from him I'm sure Brazilians will appear from everywhere! 😆 Was a really great singer in the 70s/80s.
