in 1970, she died of an accidental heroin overdose and was discovered in her Los Angeles hotel room after failing to show for a scheduled recording session. She was 27 years old. she also sang in Woodstock I was 17 when she passed.. this was the Hippy days.

Janis was one of those oh so rare artists who doesn’t just get up on stage & sing.. she legit performed for her audience, home girl sang with her whole ass body. Possessed something unique that simply cannot ever be replicated. Nobody else like that woman there before or since 💯😭💞

Janis’ inspirations were blues singers in Texas. She would sneak away to go to bars where they were performing. Apparently, she was treated like an outcast by a lot of her school mates for liking black music. She also had her heart broken pretty bad by a few dudes. It’s no wonder that the blues just resonated with her so deeply.

You can actually get energised emotionally and spiritually listening to this woman sing. That was her power of expression. 100% pure soul.

Janis Joplin , got her inspirations from , Billie Halliday, Big Mama Thornton, and the gospel singers that lived near where she grew up in Texas, back those days in the late 1950s ,it was cool to listen to the Black radio stations that were on the air, back then kids had little transistor radio's made in Japan they would carry with them to tune in. Full Bass on always, back then Folk Blues was real big , with old Bluesmen like Mance Lipscomb, Mississippi John Hurt, and Big Bill Bronzy, and Jazz was also big ,just coming out of the Beatnik times , many of the 1960s big Rock groups came up listening to all of this music , Janis she gave it all to yeah, right from the bottom of her soul, even Mama Cass , was blown away hearing Janis sing Ball and Chain . Groups like the Doors more Jazz based , and later stars like SRV ,he grew up listening to all of the same music that his older brother was into. Sadly Hendrix , Janis and Jim Morrison were the first members of the 27 club all died to young .........I saw the Doors play live , once in 1970

There's a singer that was in one of my favorite bands from the 90s, her name is Susan Marshall and the band was The Mother Station. They only got to put one album out because grunge drowned music like theirs out, but that album is one of those that I can't live without. Maybe on your own time you can check her out. "Heart Without A Home" still floors me 30 years later lol

Have you seen Janis' performance at Woodstock? That lady in the audience with her mouth hanging open? That was Cass Elliot, Mama Cass of the Mama's and the Papa's, and she was blown away, she'd never seen or heard anything like Janis before and she loved it. Cass was great in her own style, she couldn't have done what Janis did, but she could appreciate it.

Janis learned to sing by going to small town Black churches in Louisiana. That why she has soul when she sings, it is the old school gospel roots that you can only get in them small southern churches. She died of a heroin overdose, she shot heroin that was more pure than she expected.

In the late 90’s Beth Hart was in a show off-Broadway where she played/sang Janis. It was called Love, Janis

My best friend was a famous Broadway actor/singer in musicals. He was friends with Janis. We got VIP passes for her concert at the Fillmore East in NYC. We brought her a bottle of Southern Comfort, her favorite drink, which she used to drink onstage. During a long instrumental break by the Holding Company she would go offstage and find a cute guy to have a quickie, lol. She grabbed me, but I was too nervous to go with her. Boy do I regret it.

I can answer that. Bessie Smith was her number 1 inspiration; she felt she was the reincarnation of Bessie Smith, and she was so offended that Bessie Smith had no headstone on her grave that she purchased one for her.

Pearl is a masterpiece where this is beautifully showcased - it may seem effortless but it's the result of her extreme dedication to her professionalism and craft as an artist.

I loved most the blues, jazz and soul music she performed. A Piece of My Heart made her famous but it was the other the she loved doing the most and what she was blessed to sing. She was an original who suffered terrible bullying in her Texas high school for not being “ pretty” enough and loving Black music traditions.
