Without seeing what the other climbers did, it's hard to assess how different Janja is. You watch 4 or 5 people just getting nowhere, struggling, trying to get to the zone, improving, trying different betas. Then Janja comes out, and some move that nobody else could even get started with, and you think "How is that even possible, what were the route-setters thinking?" ... Janja goes up it like it's nothing.

My favourite comp to see how much better she is from others is the Munich Boulder Semi-Final from 2019: 18 climbers couldn't find a single top, 1 climber found 1 top, Janja sent all 4 boulders, flashing 2 of them. It was just unbelievable.

If you watched the historic Olympics in 2021, there's all this debate over who's gonna take the gold in the male division... and in the female division there was no such debate. We all knew. Janja is an ALIEN.

that control over her center of gravity and precalculating how she moves her whole body is quite amazing to watch. applying the right amount of strength and not carelessly taking risks is the way to go

So impressive. It must be so much easier to get some of the later boulders or even some of the higher moves if you cruised through everything that came before. I love to watch this daring, uncompromising approach. She often moves so fast, I wonder if that makes it easier for her. Other climbers may be more cautious but burn through much more energy in the process. She knows so quickly and so precisely what she wants to do, it is mesmerizing. Sometimes she just flicks through some difficult moves so she barely has to use some of the worst holds. This is like the polaropposite of me bouldering: I hang there fore like half a minute on every second move, because I am confused, lack confidence and have bad coordination.
@donalddarko36762 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. She has more time to rest and she has effectively done fewer moves.

21:10 😲 I've done that by accidental save before, but to see it done intentionally and with perfect form 👏 her co-ordination in dynamic moves is epic

Why was there 30 final boulders in 2017? Isn’t it 4 boulders per final?
@DoubleSteezeBurger2 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that. That was a typo. In 2017 Janja was in 5 finals with 4 boulders each, so 20 total. I added a caption to clarify the typo in the video. Thanks!

I get really frustrated with certain boulder and lead routes. I think it's just lazy setting to make a climb reachy for difficulty. A good route should be challenging because it's technical or maybe hard to read. Not just a sequence of big moves. It kind of makes the grade somewhat meaningless. Easy if you're tall, the grade if you're average height and hard if you're short. I'm 5ft 4 and weight 59kg. I punch above my weight on overhanging / roof / cave style climbs. I suck at reachy slab. I'm 54 so I prefer not to be too dynamic. Things break. 😃

It's so revealing of the commentators when they start off sounding a little condescending at first, early in janja's career, and then start sounding more and more incredulous towards the latter years, and by the end of it, just plain ol, "here's janja, let's see her top this flash attempt"...this is now still ongoing, with absolutely unnecessary condescending commentary for many of the "newer" climbers in the finals, or overcorrecting with hype for those who are kinda just "meh" (relative to the rest of these super pros)...get your game up commentators, be more useful please 😂

@@donemigholzjr.7344 I actually have had the same thoughts, if we could see someone like her enjoy and delve deeply into other pursuits, if she were to have similar success, I wonder if we could better distill exactly what it is that helps her achieve it. Right now we don't know how much of "climbing related genetics" vs environment and learned capabilities has contributed to her performance and joy in the sport. If she applied herself to something else equally as wholeheartedly, and was equally successful, it would a huge win for the "growth mindset", which I am hugely a proponent of.
