The AcuFeed Flex System works with the included AD foot (walking foot) and the optional VD foot. Kim shows you how to use this system with these feet and why you will get great results with either foot.
There are two AcuFeed Flex feet that I like to use for the Janome MC9400 - one that came with the machine, the AcuFeed Dual Feed Foot and Holder (Twin) or AD foot and an optional purchase, a narrower foot, the VD foot. These feet are what I call a walking foot or some people call an even feed foot.
Some Janome machines, such as the Janome MC9400, have the Acufeed Flex system. This moves the fabric is evenly by the foot on top and the feed dogs on the bottom, keeping the top and bottom fabrics stitching along at the same rate. This prevents any scrunching of fabrics or having the top fabric pushed along so it ends up being longer than the bottom fabric.
Why would you use the VD foot? It works better in narrower areas where you want the walking foot effect. It works well for stitching around the perimeter of a quilt sandwich to keep it together before quilting, and great for adding binding to an already quilted top.
For walking foot quilting, I like to use the VD foot if I want to echo the previously stitched line by using the edge of foot to measure over. I can also use the included quilting guide bar for echo quilting, but I find that lining up the edge of the VD foot with my previously stitched or quilted line gives me just the spacing I like to see on my quilts.
I can use the straight stitch needle plate if doing straight stitching and options available will change on your display. I can use the zigzag plate if I want to do other than straight stitches.
Two things you need to keep in mind when using either of these feet:
1. Install it properly on the sewing machine and
2. Engage the Acufeed Flex System on the display screen so they will work their best.
Be sure to push the silver part of the foot into the hole at the back of the foot holder area on the back of the machine. Tighten foot attachment screw. See p 23 in your manual for how to install the AcuFeed feet.
Now that the foot is installed, you’ll want to engage the Acufeed System. See p. 33 in your manual and view this video to see how to do this on the display screen.
You can use these feet on any of the Janome sewing machines that have the AcuFeed Flex System. Check with your local Janome dealer to confirm.

Hi Jamie Am very close to purchasing a 9450. I currently have a 7700 and have really really liked it. The 9450 scares me a bit. When I watch your videos I wonder if I will adapt to a new one with so many more wonderful features. Need some confidence building. Have been quilting for 20 years and hope to carry on for many more years. Thanks for your clear presentations!

Hi Marilyn: First, are you clear on why you want to buy a new sewing machine and what features you need on it? That's what I ask all sewists before they commit to a specific model. Yes, a new sewing machine will be a step up and a bit of a learning curve, but, it you take it a little bit at a time, only learning what you really need to know, you'll soon conquer it. The most important part is to unbox your machine, get it set up and then start learning about it one little item at a time. You can do it! And always keep in mind that you bought the new machine for a reason so you really need to get using it as soon as you get it. BTW, it's Kim, not Jamie - that's my son 😉

Hi Kim, I just want you to know how pleased I was to find your tutorials as I bought this machine at the end of February! So far I love it but being new to quilting I appreciate your help! I have used the walking foot a few times but some of the stitches I want to use (in the Quilting Section) are not available when the “3 triangle” button is pressed. Does this mean that the foot doesn’t work so effectively, or not at all? I would really like to use Quilt/Pattern 20 on a quilt - which would be the best foot to use? Thanks for your help, Pauline (from Scotland) 🙂 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

You need to have the straight stitch plate on to use the AcuFeed Flex system and need to use the AD foot that came with the machine. The HP plate is only used with the HP foot, typically for piecing a quilt.

After watching your video, I have been shopping for one of the single Acufeed foot holders. I have noticed in my search that you can buy the foot holder alone but you cannot buy the foot alone. And the only other foot that I have seen is the zipper foot that will attach to the single holder. Do you know of any other feet that will fit on the single holder?

I've only seen the zipper foot as well for the single foot holder - and even that is a bit hard to locate! I don't know that there are any other feet that fit the single foot holder. I would suggest that you check with your local Janome dealer to see if they might have more information.

I have a Janome 9400 which I really like. Is it possible to sew (quilt) in reverse with the walking foot? Not just back stitching a few stitches at the end, etc., but actually sewing a quilting line. I have seen this in an instructional quilting video--it was possible on the instructor's machine (not a Janome). I haven't been able to find a definitive answer online. Thanks for your help. Your videos have answered so many of my questions.

@linwin1066
@linwin1066 4 жыл бұрын
@@Chatterboxquilts Thank you. In the instructional video I watched, the purpose of quilting in reverse with the walking foot was to make a pattern (that's not edge to edge) in the interior of the quilt, without having to keep turning the quilt to change the sewing direction. For example, a chevron pattern where you are out in the middle of the quilt and sew forward to make a line, then you can sew backwards to make another line--without turning the quilt
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 4 жыл бұрын
You could try this but I'd go quite slowly as It's not really made for that and the AcuFeed Flex System will probably be trying to move the fabric forward, rather than backward.

You can adjust your stitch length if they are too small. The foot pressure should be the regular setting. Really don't need to do anything different when using the AcuFeed Flex feet.

did you realize, that there is no difference how the sewing-foot moves, if activating the dual-system or not? i really wonder why this is the case. maybe somebody got any idea? because with the janome continental m7 this isn't the case. if you do not activate the dual-system, then there is no transport on top. any suggestions and ideas are much appreciated!
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 4 жыл бұрын
There should be a difference when using one of these feet and activating the AcuFeed Flex System. These feet work with the AcuFeed Flex System to move the fabric along evenly - so the top fabric doesn't end up longer than the bottom. The M7 has a different feed system that is new with this machine (I think). I do know that there is an update to the M7 which allows you to manually activate this system.
@sewinghedgehog540
@sewinghedgehog540 4 жыл бұрын
yes true, you can activate the feed system on the m7 which gives you the possibility to also use other stitches not just straight stitches. however, i was just wondering why the accu feet sewing-foot moves the same way on the 9400 wether the feed system is activated or not (check it out ;-)). either way the little two arms on the accu feet sewing foot are pushing the fabric on top, even if the feed system isn't activated. that is one of the big mistery i could not resolve and i really wonder why this is the case. thanks for your videos, i appreciate your great work!

Hmmm, that is annoying! Are you sure that you have pushed it all the way into the slot? It sort of clicks in and you should be able to hear it when it is properly inserted. You always show me something I didn't know and feel so stupid for not knowing! I've been using these feet for more than a year - garment sewing - and didn't realize that icon on the screen was for the feed system. Since I didn't press that...does it affect the effectiveness of the foot do you think? I hope I haven't done any damage to my machine :( I have the extra foot that comes with the narrow one as well for putting in zippers. It's always interesting to me what feet come with different machines.

I have a bit of an update re the walking foot icon. If you press this icon only straight stitches are lit up on the screen which doesn't work for me since I use it often for knits as a garment sewer. So I think I must have pressed this originally when I did buy the machine and just didn't use it any more because my desired stitches suddenly disappeared. You'd think this machine was designed for quilting and maybe it was but I've enjoyed using it for garment sewing nonetheless.
@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is probably what happened, Kathleen - makes sense. I think of the 9400 as a quilting machine, but Janome seems to view it as a garment sewing machine and the 6700 as the quilting machine. I think the 9400 has enough options and flexibility to work well for either function.

The different feet that attach to the Acufeed Flex foot are more like soles and yes, they do slip onto the Acufeed flex foot that came with your Janome M7. You can just pull off the original one and then slide on the optional feet. It can be a bit tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, you'll be able to easily switch off to different soles.

@Chatterboxquilts
@Chatterboxquilts 4 жыл бұрын
The screw is meant to be removed, if necessary, to attach your presser feet. For this particular foot, it's much easier to remove the screw - the plastic part on the foot is thicker than other feet for this machine which makes it a bit harder to get it on the machine. Also there is a part that needs to go in in the back of the machine. Definitely a bit tricky to get these feet onto the machine but with practise it becomes easier.
