In my two visits to Tokyo, I stayed at the Keio Plaza in Shinjuku (company money). It is fun to relive some of these times and areas, 30 or so years later.

Great video! We are heading to Japan in June, for two weeks. Most of the time will be in the beaches in Okinawa! ❤

A long time ago I was stationed in Korea and took the ferry from Pusan to Shimenosiki (so) Japan and took trains north to Tokyo and flew back to Kimpo in Seoul. Amazing how it got from way rural to very urban.

From Hiroshima everyone should go to Itsukushima, the island offshore with the World Heritage Red Torii and Shinto temples and hike and visit this quiet island.

48:00 we went to kawaguchi, i have some great photos of fuji across the lake. it's a very plain little town though, very european in feel, with modern hoteeels and the usual car parks. but great views of fuji.

fun fact: the average delay for the shinkansen is 12 SECONDS. if trains are late in japan you get a chit to give to your boss cos the japanese are VERY strict about work hours.

Interesting to get a visitors perspective on Japan. I follow an Australian woman living there who lived in an 8m2 apartment some years ago, that video went viral. Disney in the US isn't exactly the happiest place on Earth to work at... park employees making so little they have to be on food stamps. Crazy.

40:00 japanese food is much better than anything else in the world, they use fresh ingredients much more than the rest of us - things in japan tend to be expensive, but you pay for quality, the only place i've been where the food and service compare is prague. we got hot food from a 7/11 in japan that was really, really good. they have much higher standards than the US. what is going on with food in the US (and the UK) is sugar and salt. i never put sugar on our cereals, it already has sugar added, same with salt. i forget which ones but most of our foods, especially fast food, has ingredients that make them "more-ish" not necessarily addictive, but you keep eating till it's gone. i don't think they use additives and preservatives as much in japan, and the quality of food is much higher anyway - i recal going to a large department store and one entire floor was just cakes of all kinds.

1:09:00 i've heard many people say the best way is thailand / korea / vietnam and japan. heard very positive reports. i used to have a pen pal in hawaii, she didn't recommend going there. google tells me i've visited 53 cities, my ex wife is japanese and our son was born on new years day, so each new year we visited a different city in europe, and i've been to north africa, i would say most cities in europe would be interesting to live in for a year or two, but i would like to have worked in japan, on our first trip out i had connections in the computer graphics industry (this is 1995 ish) and we visited people like NHK and omnibus japan, but i didn't get any jobs!

12:30 i would say the japanese are too polite to cut the line. one thing that the japanese themselves are critical of is individuality is frowned on, you have to do as you are told rather than do whats feels right, it is slowly changing but the japanese are very much "for the many" and not for individuality. i wish the world could balance the best of the best cos japan is such a great place, BUT....

It’s just a more respectful culture than in the US and most of Europe. Other countries have a lot of very entitled ppl who don’t think of anyone else but themselves.

51:00 littering is an odd thing, like you are quite happy to carry that coke tin around while it has contents, but the SECOND it is empty, you want to chuck it. just take it home. we stopped having trash bins in london during the IRA bombings in the 70's but people still have to throw their rubbish away IMMEDIATELY it becomes empty - it's crazy, just take it with you. the japanese have little air tight ash trays they carry in their pockets! just have a plastic trash bag with. strange people.
