malay weddings usually is a 'hit-and-run' event. what I meant is, if it says in the invitation card 11am - 3pm, it just means you can come anytime within the time stated, take a plate of meal, done & go. you don't really have to wait for all the agendas. that's why it is a hit-and-run business. people come to show they're aware that the family has now a new member & not be mistaken if they are seen together... ;)

11 am is the time for the guests to start arriving to eat lunch! Usually at 12.30 pm is the arrival of the bride & groom! Then guests can take photos. It depends on the host. Some start at 11.30 am. Other wedding may be high-tea or dinner.

Typically, it is understood that a wedding kenduri would start at 12pm onwards. 11am would usually be for people who wants to drop by without eating or maybe the workers/helpers to come. But the actual makan makan and main event would happen only after 12pm

If in sarawak, the timing is different. If at my place in Miri, usually we starts at 10 am with the arrival of guests. Then the bride n groom come in. After the prayer recital, usually speeches by fathers or brothers of both bride n groom. N then all starts eating n some interlude activities such as performance or anything else. The event usually ends around 12.30 - 1.00 pm.

A wedding in a kampung is very much different. It can start a few days ahead with many relatives come over to help out with the wedding preparation- from cooking (we call it rewang) to cleaning the house and surrounding compound, to decorating the house and dais (pelamin) to helping out preparing stuffs to be given to guests. And usually the night before the wedding, there is “berinai kecil” where the bride and some close relatives will be wearing nice clothes and get their fingers (and toes) henna-ed. On the day of the wedding, especially the bride will wear the elaborate wedding dress usually songket, adorned with glittery golden jewellery, big heavy tradiotional tiaras, face made up beautifully by the “Mak Andam” (similar to make-up artist). When the groom arrives there will be a loud “announcement” by the “kompang”. Sadly all these are not very common. I miss this too. I do hope you will get to experience this.

I think you should try to attend the wedding held in the village because it's nice and fun (traditional wedding) go a day early you will be able to see the village community working together to prepare food for the guests in the evening and morning before the ceremony starts

Starts at 11 does not mean the groom n bride are there. 11 is just a time that guests can start coming and eating. The guests can stay until bride groom arrives or leave earlier
