Decided to take one of the fights from my video and put Mortal Kombat music behind it. And yes I almost did get choked out in the video.
Please enjoy, and stop by and check out the my channel. Also btw I'm using Judo Newaza. Do not confuse this type of newaza for traditional.

I'm a brown belt judoka and have never done BJJ in my life. Regardless, I firmly believe that BJJ is a solid martial art just as judo is. When sparring with a BJJ blue belt, I was able to throw him multiple times. He was also able to submit me multiple times. If you guys are talking about "self defense", we would have essentially killed each other every time i threw him or he submitted me. Respect to all martial arts.

the koryu are the clasical jujitsu arts from that period,prior to the meji restoration,the arts the samurai used on the battlefield ,they had only limited newaza due to the situaton.A few styles of jujitsu had groundwork from which judo got their original newaza,which was very limited by the way,that came later when judo was defeated by fusen ryu in a challenge and kano decided to emphaise newaza more.He eventually discouraged it via the kosen rule.

Exactly. These arguments only prove human psychology is universal - we all want to feel superior.. - eg. "I'm Russian, therefore Sambo is the best" .. "I am Brazilian, therefore BJJ is the best" .."I am Japanese, therefore Judo is the best" etc.. . Well, perhaps we should take Judo and Japanese culture as the base of it all.. after all, and they teach Respect. BR

Jiu Jutsu (and all its spelling variants) is a generic term for an array of empty hand fighting techniques native to Japan; namely the feudal era. There were many schools with varying emphasis on joint locks, choking, etc. It exists now through its descendents: Judo, Aikido, Hapkido, BJJ, etc. They're all part of the same family so it's pointless to argue which is "real" or better than another.

Actually "picking someone up" (if you mean takedowns, throws, and the like) spend little energy if done correctly. In Judo, the main focus is on throws and one of the key factors is learning to throw with the best technique possible so as to use the least amount of energy. If you understand the physics behind it, throwing even (and sometimes, especially) a resisting opponent can be less strenuous than throwing a well-placed punch!

Nice to see some intelligent arguments here. I believe Kano was a student of Kito Ryu Jujutsu, and got his students to bone up on techniques from Fusen Ryu Jujutsu which focused on Ne waza. The BJJ I typically see seems to be focused more on the Fusen side than the Kito. An instructor of mine made me laugh once, we studied Daito, Kito and Fusen and he stopped and said "you realize these techniques were merely supplements to armed combat in case you lost your weapons" Which amazes me.

@BlackShinobiShozoku From Wiki: When Maeda left Japan, judo was still often referred to as "Kano Jiu-Jitsu", or, even more generically, simply as "Jiu-Jitsu." PLUS: those judo moves were passed to judo. then handed to brazil. Point is that the moves were around in an origin earlier that judo. So they do come from the same origin. Check Mate

In my JJ dojo we roll as well occasionally. We also practice throws/takedowns competitively (as in randori), but we very rarely allow all techniques because some are just too dangerous. Throwing someone with a wrist or arm lock applied throughout the throw is banned even in our tournaments because if the opponent resists you will break something. We try to simulate as much of a real fight as possible without being too dangerous.

To say that there is no such a thing as BJJ is just ignorant. No BJJ practitioner who knows the discipline will deny that the origins of the sport are Japanese. But there is enough differences between the mother version and the derivative to warrant a different name. BJJ still Jiu-Jitsu, but the variation was developed completely in Brazil, hance Brazilian JJ

Well, after spending the last hour reserching this information you are 100% right. the information i hade mentioned that it was just the japanise governement re-nameing the art from 'Kano Jiu-Jitsu' to Kodokan judo in light of the Founder of Judo- Jigoro Kano wishing his art to stay seperate from Jiu jitsu (Wich he studied and altered to create Judo) but you are right, that would make Maeda a judoka and mean the gracies never learned the true art of Japanise Jiu jitsu.

Yes, "the bigger guy can easily do more damage than the smaller guy", however the bigger guy is almost definitely slower. Since the little guy can end the fight with one well-placed punch or kick, as long as he avoids being hit the amount of damage he deals is less significant. In all wrestling, you can almost always grab your opponent and your ability to pick him up is very advantageous. They are both somewhat strength and skill oriented, but strength is a greater advantage in grappling.

There is a major disadvantage if your opponent is significantly stronger than you. That said, it can be overcome with enough skill. This strength advantage is more prominent in grappling as opposed to striking since direct contact is made for the majority of the fight whereas in striking, speed is more important. They both are necessary however, and they are more effective in different situations.

All of them had the same initial purpose: reduce a dude in a Yoroi (Armor). Thats why there are no strikes in these martial arts. There is no point in punch a full armoured samurai in a medieval battlefield, in case you cant find your wheapon.

That triangle technique was lacking some important technical detail (he went to the wrong side, legs out of position, no attempt to bring the head down, no attempt at a sweep to armbar) and he didn't even hit an arm bar after his triangle attempt was not working (the other competitor's arm was fully extended). He also didn't even try any escapes at the end (I count 3 that he missed). And no, the video shows he wasn't being prevented from trying them. Kid Peligro says "Now go train jiu-jitsu."

shaui chiao has joint locks not so much groundwork but its compared more to judo than jujutsu. Some claim its the mother art of jujutsu. Although there is a sport form the art itself is designed for combat and throws are intended to land opponents on thier head to break their necks, they also strike and attack vital targets on the body and train to grab flesh vs gi.

@danmunners Don't be silly. So-called "street fighters" don't make a routine of bringing armed gangs. There are plenty of guys who like to brawl without any specific training for it. But if you expect them to behave like a ring fighter, i.e., hang back, figure out an opponent, react intelligently to feigns and so on, you'll generally be mistaken. They behave erratically and if you're in the mindset to dance around for awhile, you can get caught off guard early on and KOed.

At 2:45, black gi can push blu gi's head backward by pressing below his ear with his phalanx tip, then bring his legs to catch the head with the feet, and finish by bringing him down to ground while holding the wrist. You had the match there :P it was not illegal since it wasn't punching... it's more like a push with a stingy tip against the soft tissue.

No, I live in Melbourne, Australia and have restarted Judo recently, having previously practised many years ago in my childhood. Their is much ignorance surrounding the history of BJJ. Many casual MMA fans and BJJ players don't know about the introduction of Kano's Kodokan Judo to the Gracies by Maeda. It is a pity when martial artists do not learn the correct history of their art.

Keep in mind that: "what works for you" may not work for somebody else. The approach of "Brazilian" Jiu Jitsu (remember JJ was taken by Maeda to Brazil) and Jigoro Kano's Judo (Maeda was a student of Kano). You can have a friendly sparring session with some Masters in JJ, Aikido and Hapkido. I guess they will be happy to teach you their techniques.

@elenchus Kind of like how MMA doesn't let you use small joint manipulation, biting, eye-gouging, groin strikes, etc etc. There's usually a good reason why martial arts prohibit certain techniques. You are not allowed to strike in BJJ tournaments. Does that make BJJ a bad "real world" martial art? Just because one fighting style doesn't allow techniques in competitions is no reason to believe that they don't know how to defend against them or perform them.

@elenchus Update since I posted that. I took up judo again at a much better local school. It's much less hardcore, and, as a result, people learn much faster and the skill level is higher. In addition, since they aren't obsessed with competition victory, they don't rely on arbitrary rules nearly so greatly and after class greatly relax what techniques are prohibited.

@ValkyereHowie you could look to do a koryu, or a traditional form of Aikido (eg Yoshinkan). Yes, the focus is on tachi waza, but that's because going to the ground is certain death on the battlefield. That said, the principles still work on the ground, it just depends on what you want from your martial arts studies. It *is* sad that Jigoro Kano isn't as well known as Helio Gracie, but those who seek will find the truth. Gambatte.

@thepushfitzy I agree a lot of Judo players dont mind giving up their backs. I used to do it,now I know to S-mount when others do. It has a lot to do with the whole time alotted thing. When you say,"get to that position", do you mean you are in Kesa gatame,or have it on someone. Because properly executed, you arent giving up your back. The average person that does not practice any forms of martial arts may believe that Judo and Jui-Jitsu are the same thing. This is probably because they sound, and sometimes look, very similar. But, in fact, Judo and Jui-Jitsu are two different types of martial arts. Not because you heard that "Judo" from the same and "Ju" from Jujutsu which means "Gentle" it'll give you the rights to say that is the same thing. I'm not saying that, my BJJ coach and the whole Google can tell so.

pretty much what he said, the main difference i could think of between judo and bjj is youll be in trouble if a bjj ifghter pulls you to the ground and into his guard, he can destroy you there, however, fighting a judo guy means you might not even survive the fall plus they are monsters on the ground as well, judo was created for war not as a sport.

@danmunners Pretty good reasoning. This why I am the second best runner on my Cross Country team and Track Teams in long distance to middle distance running and train BJJ. If I am in a street fight, not likely, I am aiming for the nuts or solar plexus of the guy, putting my shoulder into the punch and getting the hell out of dodge. BJJ is for fun/"Play" fights with friends for me. Running is what is going to save my life in a very unlikely street fight.

Now many Judo clubs are getting back to newaza... about time.

@patrickhenrysghost Kesa isn't all that great of a hold to use on a good BJJ guy. It gives up the back, which the judo players (black and brown belts)I have wrestled with, don't mind giving up so much. In fact, though BJJ and Judo come from the same origin, kesa isn't focused on much in BJJ and is thought of as a less superior technique. When I get to that position I use an under hook to the outside arm. This makes it really tough for your opponent to move around.

Technically it isn't, but it is heavily based on a Japanese system; it's not like they came up with it themselves. I personally think (although I haven't have much experience with either) that the only significant difference is the way that students are trained to use the moves.

@thepushfitzy They are both novices. And he DID do a great job. BlackShinobi,working submissions from pins is by far the best way to beat BJJ guys. I'd recommend working on throws and landing into Kesa Gatame. Good stand-up= land into uber dominant position+lots of time to think about what you are doing while putting your opponent in a 100% defensive position.
@1individeo
@1individeo 11 жыл бұрын
Exactly. For exemple you face more than one opponent BJJ is useless cause you have to avoid ground fighting. A striking style is better. But if you fight a single opponent BJJ become the best chance you have to beat an even bigger opponent. But if you face 2 or more you need a hit and run style. Krav maga, Boxing or Muay thai are your best chance to leave the place alive. To be complete I'd say learn BJJ, Muay Thai and add Krav Maga for dirty fighting (nails in the eyes, kick in the balls...)

Degeneration of human culture is universal in modern times. Globalisation is working, yes, but instead of us exchanging values from our cultures, we're witnessing the disappearance of tradition and human norms worldwide. I'd like to see practitioners of grappling and wrestling martial arts practice striking martial arts as well (and vice versa). You're at a great disadvantage if your opponent is much stronger than you, and it's very difficult to defeat multiple attackers. That said, it's very effective in 1 on 1 fights and against weapons, hence the reason that striking martial arts should train in it as well. It's best to be well rounded.

@BlackShinobiShozoku I once cross trained at a good judo school and everyone had that mentality. I'd be tapping them out left and right wit leg locks of various kinds and they'd just chill and after tapping say "didn't count." It's the ground fighting equivalent of TKD rules. No punches to face! So I'll just learn to never defend against face punches and train that mentality daily.
@elenchus
@elenchus 12 жыл бұрын
@danmunners Precisely. You learn to fight under very specific conditions. Besides, fighting other trained fighters has almost nothing to do with fighting people who know nothing. You could entertain separate martial arts for each if you wished. You must constantly fight against people from different styles, or even different individuals from each style, even when you're subjected to their rules each time.
