The Twilight Zone is a great classic Sci-Fi Fantasy TV series that ran from 1959-1964 and was created by Rod Serling. Each episode is a different story that deals with some kind of paranormal or weird event that always has some sort of twist at the end. It’s a great series that has stood the test of time and has been remade and copied in other films and more modern tv series with the same name, but the original hosted by Rod Serling himself will always be the best!

“Hors d’oeuvres” is a French word for “appetizers”, it’s just a more fancier word that socialites like Terry’s girlfriend like to use to sound more sophisticated instead of saying appetizer.

5:27 The Twilight Zone was a show created by Rod Sterling. In each episode abnormal things would happen and then the characters would ironically benefit or have some loss. There was always a message or a lesson to be learned. In one episode an antisocial bookworm wished that he could be alone and read his books without disturbance. Then one day everyone was gone and he was alone in the library and very happy. But he accidentally breaks his glasses and now he cannot see to read. So he's left there among the books he loves with no one to help him to repair his glasses. The Twilight Zone had several iterations. The first one was in 1959.

Some cultural context - although foods like "Tofu" are widespread, they're often considered elitist and feminine as they are often used as a meat-substitute. Kreese's parting comment to Silver to "enjoy [his] tofu" is basically him saying.. you're a shell of the former man you were. Most of the things going on at the party in American culture would not be considered excessively masculine. This is supposed to be compared to Silver's history as a ruthless capitalist, karate master, and war veteran.

1. Band is both a class and afterschool activity. The "club" concept in Japanese schools is not the same in the US: you can do more than one, or none. It's not mandatory. 2. The Twilight Zone was a TV show in the early 60's that had bizarre and unusual situations. It's considered a classic and if you can find a way to watch it, it's highly recommended. 3. Captain Eagle Claw is just her mocking him and the Eagle Fang name. 4. I started karate only when I moved to the birthplace of karate. Figured that while living there I had to give it a try. 5. Hors d'oeuvre is like a small appetizer usually before a meal. Maybe similar to the small plates you order at an izakaya. 6. A mimosa is a cocktail usually associated with fancy events or brunch. 7. They need to grow up but never do. It's hard to generate conflict at this point if they're mature.
@Lexcronin

I said it once and I’m going to say it again: the way this series shows how traumatic the past can be is amazing. It's even more evident now that Silver's back, with all his Vietnam flashbacks. I think he completely stole the spotlight this season. He first seems to have evolved into a rich cultural guy, but that's too far away from what we know, so we know that, at least, he's repressing something. But when the past comes to literally knock on his door, it's like a switch of memories he can't turn off. It floods him. That's why his motto during the whole season is the piece he was first playing on the piano: before he came back to cobra kai, that was one of the few moments he had of unrestrained and rampant emotionality. It gave him the freedom to speak about his pain without words. And since then, every time he digs deeper into the past, releasing the dark part of himself that only desires power and validation, “the beast”, that same piece appears, as the anthem of his own tragicomedy.

Hi sensei! I live in Italy, I started karate because I was.. lost. There were so many bad things happening in my life and I needed to distract myself, at the time (2013) I didn't know what martial arts were, I had only done kick boxing for a short time.. I threw myself into this adventure without conviction, I was sick. My sensei of the time at the first lesson, without knowing anything about me, said to me: "you have a problem, it's not physical.. let's fix the problem you have in your soul and then we'll fix the techniques. You don't believe in yourself, I'll do it and over time you will start doing it too ". My sensei and karate saved my life.

Twilight Zone is a scifi/fantasy/supernatural anthology series from 1959, pretty revolutionary for its time that still is influential today. It is know for weird and bizarre stories, going from time travel to portals to other dimensions. It popularized scifi to a mass audience, so it had a big cultural impact, because of that, it is usual when things get bizarre to say you are in the Twilight Zone. If you like good fiction it still worth watching the original series, the new series is not so great.

As a kid, watching Karate Kid and Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris and all of that I wanted to learn karate, but never gathered the nerve to ask my parents. I grew up and never thought of it again for years, until my kid started taking lessons, after trying out one practice when he was watching his cousin training. I thought it was cool, to be honest. The kid was loving it without me ever having to lead him to that path. Of course, after he started I suggested he watched Karate Kid, but it was all him. His sensei asked me a couple of times if I would like to join in. My kid too, he asked me to go. Of course not, I'm too old, I thought. At 40, my 'karate phase' was long gone. Then my kid learned his sensei was giving classes in two dojos, one right here, one a few km away, and of course, he wanted to go too. That meant twice the training for the same fee. It also meant I had to take him, wait for him, and bring him back. There I met this older guy, a gentleman in his sixties, 9th kyu. Sure, he was not the fastest, nor did he had the best techniques. But he was an inspiration for me. He was there for every session, twice a week, doing his best and showing you don't have to be a kid to enjoy karate. There I was, saying I was too old, and a man old enough to be my father had just started his own journey. I am now 6th kyu. I began taking classes with my son, which is being a fantastic experience by itself, and picked up something I wanted to do 30 years prior. I'm loving it!

Mimosa is usually Champagne and Orange Juice, sometimes with a splash of Triple Sec. Also, Easter Egg: The wine bottle Terry kicks at the end of the episode is from a vineyard or name of the wine is called Kamen, which is the last name of Robert Mark Kamen who wrote the all three of the original screenplays for the Karate Kid movies.

WOW! I watched the entire season, and it's even better than the last. You are going to love it Sensei. I wanted to react and answer, things you said or asked. Christmas means nothing to me, I just find it very beautiful, and heart warming holiday. I am Jewish. About why I started martial arts, back when I was 11 (35 today), I started out of curiosity. I knew nothing about this world, and I reached places I couldn't even dream of. As for defense and offense, I think both are very important. Like the Shaolin Dragon, the Dragon defense is about dodging. But I also believe in blocks, big believer. I am a practitioner of- Vale Tudo (American style) Southern Shaolin Kung-Fu + Animals (Chinese style) Goju-Ryu Karate (no need to tell you what it is) Many weapons, and lastly Muay Thai. So I took things from each style, offensively and defensively. I am now finally recovering, from a 3 years spinal cord injury, during which I had to take a break. But I will be back, stronger than ever, I will invest all the time in the world, for becoming a martial arts teacher, the right way, I will fight for it. I intend to establish my own art, based on what I learned, to respect every part in my journey. Just like Kreese said- "Karate is not a thing, it's a way of life." So I say, to me- "Martial arts is not a thing, it's my way of life." And Terry Silver is such an awesome villain, I am so glad he came back.

That's how they were able to get it back for cobra kia. Also you had asked about Ralph's age earlier. He was born in 1961 and is now 60 years old. He was in his early 20s during the first 2 films. In his late 20s for the part 3. Even in the film The outsiders he was already 20 years old. He's always looked quite young. But yes, he's 60 years old and will be 61 later this year.

I was 4 years old when I first saw The Karate Kid when it was came on the Disney Channel. It was one of my favorite movies growing up. But I was also bullied growing up. So, I started doing karate when I was 14 years old and I put a lot into it. I learned not only to defend myself, I also learned courtesy and respect for others and myself. I also learned about honor and discipline. I was also taught to keep an open mind.

My friend Maddux got me into shotokan when I was 11, and a couple of my other friends were doing it as well. Out of all of the ones that started when I did, only two of us stuck around long enough for a black belt test.

In retrospect, that is perfect. One class teaching focus with another being loud and rambunctious, the perfect combination on how effecting both the environment and teacher are. It's easy to focus without distractions, less so with stimulus.

I watched the whole season yesterday. It is great. I enjoy seeing your reactions to the show. I developed an interest in karate because of the original movies, but I didn't start training until several years later. I'm a yondan in Matsumura Seito Shorin-ryu now. I did have my son work out with me for a while, but he did not stick with it. Maybe one day he will pick it back up.

6:25 I started Kung Fu because I loved martial arts movies but also my cousin was doing it at the same school I went to. I fell in love with Wushu and became more interested in that as a sport. I was never interested in Karate until much later. You know how arrogant some kids can be and in America these days there are a lot of people that grow up but are still children, I was (am if we're being honest in some cases) one of these and so I viewed all other martial arts as sucking.. but I gained a respect for Karate and other martial arts, especially boxing much later in life once I grew up and learned to not let my ego run my life. This is why I'm really impressed with you, so young and yet so wise. It really speaks volumes for both Japanese culture as well as Karate practice.

I love your reaction videos of Cobra Kai. I can't wait to see your reaction to season 4 finale and the All Valley Tournament. I'm very interested in who you think (with ALL THINGS considered) is the best all around fighter among the students regardless of which dojo they belong to. I've been met with a lot of resistance over who I think it is, so I'm anxious to get your perspective.

Interesting question. If you’re talking about a sporting environment counter punchers usually win. In a dark alley somewhere you want to do max damage real fast and leave

When I was in active duty i was training in Kung fu with a brotherhood n other martial art schools including Karate. We would rotate from locations and would train like that school for the day. Our instructor would stand back and follow instructions with all of us students expand on the benefit the following day. He told us that learning new techniques was always a good thing. He also said that taking instruction from another was humbling for him too and would make him a better instructor for us as well. Being that I was already a mixed martial artist I loved it. The key to making it work was respecting the instructor leading no matter what. even if it was not your class leading that day.

It has been so entertaining and useful for you to share your knowledge of both Japanese culture and also martial arts to help us all understand things about the movies and series that we may have missed the first time around or were confused or wrong about. I know that you have answered so many questions that I have had for decades. So, thank you so much. hors d'oeuvres is a fancy french word for an appetizer, specifically the kind you serve at a cocktail party. A mimosa is a cocktail of orange juice and champagne that is particularly popular at brunches. A "brunch", if that's not something Japanese people are familiar with, is a late morning meal served around 11 a.m., it's called 'brunch' because it's between breakfast and lunch.

I love watching martial arts in any style. Unfortunately actually learning it would be a mistake for me. I have too much anger and I don't trust myself enough to not really hurt someone cause that's not what the spirit of martial arts is and never should be. But that still doesn't stop me from enjoying the watching part. Good video, Sensei and congratulations on all of your success.

I enjoy your videos. I love getting your insight, ive always been interested in Japanese culture. I started martial arts for two reasons. Yes, Karate Kid was one reason and the other was I got hooked on Jean Claude Van Damme and Chuck Norris movies as a kid. Personally, Ive always been on Team Johnny. I grew up on the original movies and I knew Johnny was in the wrong but Daniel always had an arrogance to him. He's a good guy but there is an arrogance to him. Johnny always seemed more upfront and straightforward. He is not perfect, he admits it but he tries his best to make himself better. I've always been more like the newer Johnny which is don't be a bully but if someone wants a fight I do not back down. I was so happy Cobra Kai showed that Johnny was a misunderstood character in the original. He looking for a father figure and was manipulated by Kreese, he's a good man at heart.
