8:35 They're called drive-in theaters. They were once huge in the US in the 50's and 60's, there were over 4,000 drive-in theaters in the US then. They saw a big decline from the 70's-90's thanks to several factors like increase in home video adoption (VCR's), increasing gas prices, real estate inflation making the large plots of land needed for a drive-in prohibitively expensive, daylight savings time being adopted which meant outdoor movies needed to be started an hour later in the summer which made it more difficult to air family movies due to kids bedtimes. As I recall, the number of operating drive-ins had fallen from over 4000 in 1958 to less than 200 by the early 90's. Thankfully, drive-ins saw a resurgence in popularity in the late 90's and early 00's, a wave of nostalgia for the drive-in experience led to many drive-in's reopening, and by 2006 the number of open drive-in's in the US had increased back to 500. However, the economic issues and rising gas prices in 2008 led to another decline, and drive-in numbers fell to 348 by 2014. Then movies were converted to digital, and many small drive-ins couldn't come up with the money needed to buy a digital projector, as they cost $70,000, which led to even more closings. The most recent published statistic for the number of drive-ins in operation in the US is 305, down quite alot compared to the 4000+ from the 1950's. However, Covid led to a big surge in drive-in attendance, which was nice. I have one of the 305 drive-in's still in operation in my area, they do a double feature of recently released movies for $7 per person, a fantastic deal compared to paying $9-10 for a single movie at a regular theater, so I often see movies there during the spring, summer, and fall (they're closed from November-late March).
@Thundarr100

Very well put. There's also a drive-in theatre in Vancouver, BC, Canada (actually just outside it, in the Langley area I believe). One tiny thing that you got wrong though. Daylight Savings Time was adopted way earlier than the 1970's. It actually started in the 1940's, originated by the Germans to compensate for the shortage of lamp oil caused by the war. When the Americans learned of this they adopted it as well. And just like taxes, which were supposed to end after WWI, everyone just continued using Daylight Savings after the war ended.

I am lucky to have two in my general vicinity, the one is a bit more convenient than the other. It's always a fun family treat to get to go out to a drive-in movie. I know at least one of the two by me also doubled as other things during the height of the pandemic, too. For example there was a church that used it for their worship services on Sundays, and at least one high school I know used it for their student senior graduations. I hope that they can continue on in the future. They're always such a fun time in my opinion.
@shikamaru317
@shikamaru317 2 жыл бұрын
@@Thundarr100 Daylight savings time did exist prior to that but was rarely used in the US. In 1962, a law was passed mandating that starting in 1967 DST would be implemented from April to October, but also allowing states and US territories to opt out of DST, which several did. Then in 1973 due to the the Oil Crisis, the US tried year round DST, which was much hated and in 1975 DST was changed from year round back to the previous April-October window. In 1987 an additional 3 weeks were added to the April-October DST window. Then in 2007, a further 3 weeks were added to DST in the US, from the 2nd Sunday in March to the 1st Sunday in November, which is where DST is currently at in most states in the US. But yeah, DST wasn't implemented in the US until the late 1960's, with more states adding it in the 70's and then the year round DST experiment from 1973-1975. DST has often been attributed as one of the contributing factors to the decline of drive-in theaters from the 70's-90's, due to the 1 hour later time making it difficult to play family movies because it would keep kids up past their bedtime. It's less of an issue now that it was back then, as most kids have later bedtimes these days, but back then it apparently caused quite a few issues and many drive-in's adapted to play R and NC-17 movies to try and survive, but largely failed and died out over time.

Lol Yusuke asking questions about American culture is honestly more entertaining than the reaction to the show itself. Can we get a yusuke reacts to American culture series? Since you asked. Butterfinger is like a chocolate bar with different things inside like I nuts and caramel. Sonic is a fast food restaurant where yes you receive your burger or whatever you order at your parking spot and you can eat in your car or there are tables outside. And yes a “drive in”, although slightly unpopular now a days is a movie experience where the movie plays on a giant screen, and you watch it from your cars. You actually are given a radio station for your car that plays the audio from the movie so you listen to the movie audio from your car’s radio. There were many summer nights where me and my siblings would eat candy and catch fireflies and then open the truck to our minivan, put down all of the seats, and lay across the floor of the car in sleeping bags and we would watch movies until we all fell asleep. Then our parents would drive us back home. Great times.

I would love to see Yusuke react to Rocky.. Just because it's another iconic movie series and Cobra Kai itself has sooo many callouts to Rocky, and Rocky goes a lot deeper in showing American culture from a different perspective. This is the middle class mostly but I feel like Rocky shows the more struggles that the working class go through in Philadelphia. It's a lot more gritty but at the same time it shows how you can actually make something of yourself like Rocky did. and it has a lot of movies to go over.

Something I absolutely loved this season in this episode especially with the introduction of Silvers was that at the start he almost felt like a healthy version of Cobra Kai. As if his time away and his maturity let him realize that there were good messages in what they did but he needed to be an adult about it. Whereas Kreese pushed No Fear as almost a threat, show no fear in this dojo or leave. Terry instead said the point of no fear isn't to ignore it, but to confront it and work to be a more healthy and confident version of yourself. Obviously the show can't let things just he perfect and solved so there's drama, but for these first few episodes I really enjoyed Terry as a character

8:52 - As far as I know, ''drive in'' theaters are (or at least were) very common in the US. I'm from the UK and we've got them too, it's just not so common. I went last year during covid, it was a very good way of enabling people to have a cinema experience in a safer and more private way. I'm nearly certain they use projectors because instead of the ''drive in'' cinema being in one location, they move around from city to city here in the UK. When I went during covid , someone's job was to come to each window and take a food order. You would receive a menu and can buy burgers, chips, popcorn, drinks etc.. then they would bring it to you and pass it through your window. It was absolutely brilliant! P.S If anyone has read this and cares, I went to see Grease!! It was brilliant :D

Miguel brings up Chicago, lead singer Peter Cetera went solo and sang "Glory of Love", he also mentions the song, which was on the Karate Kid II soundtrack. It hasn't been on Cobra Kai yet, probably a rights issue. Drive-ins had a resurgence lately because they are separated, but there's only a few left, not common in America. Kinda famous in the Grease (1978) movie. Butterfinger is an American candy, chocolate and peanut butter, crunchy. It is also American slang for someone who has trouble holding things, clumsy, hinting at Kenny dropping the food at the drive-in.

Japan is a very small, mountainous country where land is very scarce and expensive. Even if someone in Japan wanted to open a drive-in theatre, I highly doubt if they could. Even if they could find a large enough space to build one, the cost would be unsustainable, and I'm not sure if the interest of the public would be enough to offset the expense. If you wanted to open a drive-in in Asia, I would think South Korea or China would be a better option. The amount of available flat ground is more abundant, making it less expensive. Also, while I'm unsure of South Korea, China has become quite enamored with Hollywood films over the last twenty years or so. Having a place where they can watch movies while maintaining a safe distance from their fellow movie goers during a global pandemic might seem like a great idea to them. In fact, the pandemic is what has given new life to the few remaining drive-in theatres in North America. It's cool to know that Germany still has drive-in theatres though.

Hawk tried to save Kenny's life, by telling him to get out, and not bullying him, my opinion, he did it twice. Kreese is lying. Silver is the founder of CK, it registered on his name. And about Miguel and Daniel's relationship, Johnny should have realized, Miguel is trying to impress his future father in law, possibly. I love how Terry trains Robby, he is gentle in his strikes, keeping him safe while rough with him. I love in the Drive In scene, Demetri comes like out of nowhere, and everybody is looking at him. I love how Kyler is protective of Kenny, when the lights are shut down. Wet Cobras was awesome. And in the end of the episode, the most epic surprise visit ever. And one of the things that Cobra Kai is doing really well, without being too awful about it, is holding a mirror up to America and highlighting the fact that nobody listens to anybody. In politics, and now with social media giving people a place to act like bullies without having to look anybody in the eye. And the way Daniel thinks he’s the good guy but is frequently a jackass, and is not nearly as different from Johnny as he thinks he is, except in tone... well that’s basically the political left and right in this country. Daniel is the left and Johnny is the right. Which is why it’s so important that this show lets both guys be right about some things and wrong about some things, and why it’s so important that they learn to talk to each other and understand each other, and embrace each other’s differences and not get all offended. And that’s also why it’s so significant that Daniel is better at talking that game, but not necessarily better at actually doing it. And why it’s so significant that Johnny understands that you can’t control what people say or do, so you have to be tough enough to take it when someone is mean, and strong enough to stand up for yourself. He’s a dick because he’s used to people being a dick to him. It’s not exactly subtle, I know, but it’s well-developed and well-thought out. It’s definitely heightened and dramaticized, and hung on the framework of a karate show, but it’s a really good reflection on current events.

9:35 In america fast food restaurants have a Drive-Through where you can drive into a lane on the side of a fast food building and order into a microphone from your car window. Then when you drive to the front a worker hands you the food through a window in the building. During the pandemic, stores and some restaurants have a system where you order something and a worker will bring the item to your car in the parking lot.

Yes, being a child from the 70's Drive-in theaters was really popular then. You would pull up to a movie speaker and you would roll down your window and watch the movie setting comfortable in your car. You could even hook a tray to your door while servers on roller skates 🛼 brought food 🍔🍕 to your car. They no longer have them in Texas where I live.

Modern drive ins no longer use the speaker on a post. They use a low power FM transmitter to broadcast it to your car stereo. Much better sound than a mono source ran through weather -worn speaker in a cast zinc speaker housing.

Like some had mentioned the "Drive In" movie theaters was a popular venue for entertainment in the US (especially for teenagers) from about the 1950's(?) and on but declined rapidly with the popularity of the indoor theater experience and were mostly gone by the 2000's... after COVID and the need to distance socially, there has been a little resurgence of instances for "drive in-"- like experiences ie: showing a movie on the side of a building as opposed to a dedicated movie screen.. great reaction to a great show, that does require a fair amount of suspension of disbelief... lol the writers really like to play fast and loose with the "bullied become bullies, and back again" trope a lot among others, but it's great fun...

Drive In's are like an outdoor cinema, you drive there in your car, buy the tickets to enter and they give you a small speaker for your the inside of your car, the movie plays on the projector screen and the sound comes from the small speaker in your car. They were a big deal in the 90s but came back during Covid since the cinemas were closed off for social distancing.

Yes, when I was a kid in the early 70's, a drive-in theater (big wooden screen painted white--a powerful projector was used for the film) was the typical way to go to the movies. Only larger towns and cities had indoor cineplexes. Small towns all had one or more drive-ins. You had a small crappy speaker that you'd hang on the window for sound...often, you could pick up the audio with the AM radio in your car. You had to walk over to the concession stand, which was usually just like those at football and baseball games, to buy popcorn, candy, and sodas. I remember seeing one of the Pink Panther movies at one when I was young. The whole family would pile in the car to go see the movie. In my hometown, the drive-in would get burned down every few years it seems. A couple of times were arson. I mean, it's a really big structure made of wood; so it would be attractive to pyro-manics. They went out of fashion in the early 80s as video tape rentals took off and more indoor cineplexes were built. They are making a bit of a comeback as a nostalgia experience. Butterfinger is a brand of candy bar--crunchy peanut-butter flavor in the center and chocolate on the outside. Mr. Pibb was Coca-Cola's attempt to mimic Dr. Pepper. It tastes similar, but not quite the same. There are a few Mr. Pibb fans compared to many more Dr. Pepper fans. Yes, there are restaurants where you get food in your car. They are also called "drive-ins" (like the theater). Sonic is the most well-known example. In the 50's and 60's, there were many more. Basically, as cars became affordable post-war in the 50's, a "car culture" sprung up that allowed for entertainment from your car.

It's a drive-in movie theater; you watch the movie from your car. They were very popular in the 50s and 60s, but mostly died out and are rare now. Back then you would park next to a post with a speaker that clips to your car's window -- in modern times, they cast the audio over an AM radio station. It's an experience I recommend if you have never done it. :) The movie (as other commenters have mentioned) is "Bloodsport," which was a very popular movie when it came out. The star is Jean-Claude van Damme, whose movies were all popular, always centered around martial arts, and were mostly the same story with different names ("Double Impact" being an exception). It's an old enough movie that it's not surprising the kids haven't seen it. A Butterfinger is a candy bar. It's kind of like peanut brittle, covered in chocolate. Mr. Pibb and Dr. Pepper are VERY similar soft drinks (personally I find Mr. Pibb more fizzy and Dr. Pepper more flavorful, as if the syrup/carbonation mix ratios are different). Mr. Pibb is a Coca-Cola product, and Dr. Pepper is distributed by Pepsi (though it is its own company). Most places, because of exclusive licensing, will have one or the other; it's extremely unusual the theater would have both. Sensei, please keep these videos coming. Your commentary is enlightening. :)

Yes the drive-in movies, they're great. Not all cities and towns have them but it's really fun for like groups of friends usually teenagers or for families. It's also a good go to for a date. You drive up pay for your movie drive to the lot (there are several screens showing different movies and showtimes) and when you pay you get a radio station and the movie audio comes out of your car radio.

Drive-in movies are a throwback to the 1950’s. They were sort of popular in the 70’s for showing old B-movies. Now there’s very few of them left, although COVID did sort of bring the idea back as a way to do a socially-distant theatre experience. Traditionally there was a huge screen, and a projector, and you’d park in rows and there were speakers on poles next to the parking spots or maybe a low-power radio frequency to tune your car stereo to. The trouble is, the sound and picture quality aren’t great and it works best if your car is a convertible. It’s basically a novelty now, a nostalgic thing. But it’s a fun night out, especially for young couples looking to fool around a little. 😂

I would think the way they avoided a physical fight would have been appropriate if not for the fact that Hawk, Nate, and Bert were the ones who initiated the fight. But the whole theme of the show seems to be that there is no clear good or bad guy. Just people trying to survive the best they can with the means they were taught. Even Kreese doesn't seem so bad at times.

Drives were once popular but then they kinda died out. What became popular next is something similar, outdoor movies with large screen and projectors but instead of watching from cars people watch from camping chairs or blankets, like a picnic. Usually these take place in parks, community baseball fields or even building rooftops. The ones not on rooftop usually have lots of food trucks as well. The only time I've ever been to one there was a DJ before the movie playing music and everyone was dancing up front. It was so fun. Now that covid has made it unsafe for tradition movie theater veiwing the old school drive ins are making a comeback. The few that remained have seen a boom in business and others have reopened, new ones opened.

The theater you see in this episode is a drive in movie theater while they used to be REALLY popular their popularity died out very few are still functioning and screening movies. They started to make a comeback during the lockdown due to the thing that shall not be named but rhyms with Avid. Drive in theaters used to be really popular from pretty much the 50s-80s. The 90's saw many of them shut down. There are only a few hundred left across the US. They used to number in the thousands. I'm 40 and only went to one once when I was about 12 years old. Basically they are like a big parking lot with a giant projection screen, you tune your car radio to the theaters FM radio band for the audio. Also, regarding the students fighting all the time, this is not normal in the US, lol. The only thing I can think of that is remotely similar to this happened back in the 70's with the Legend of a man, Count Dante and the Chicago Dojo war.

1. Drive-In theaters aren't so common today. They were really popular around the 50's and 60's, fading out in the 80's as indoor theaters improved. Mostly they would be a novelty now. There was one in the Koza Sports Park in Okinawa just a year or so ago, but I don't think it's there any longer. 2. Eating in the cars, yes and no. I couldn't imagine it happening in Tokyo or Osaka, but I have seen it happen in more rural prefectures. There it is not uncommon to see someone, or usually a few people, eating in their car outside a Family Mart or McDonald's. 3. There are fast food restaurants like you described. In America it's mainly Sonic. Next time you come to Okinawa, you can try it at some A&W locations. 4. Butterfinger is a candy bar. 5. None of this fighting is normal. It's an extreme and unbelievable situation, not at all common in America. 6. Mr. Pibb and Dr. Pepper is like Coke and Pepsi. So much so that many people think Dr. Pepper is made by Pepsi (it isn't, though Pepsi distributes it in a few countries). 7. The answer is B. That's not the one they choose, obviously.
