Today my mum and I are putting a selection of Japanese snacks to the test! This Japanese taste test was one of the most interesting ones yet as we had to make a few guesses about what we were trying (impregnation methods? Salad flavour corn snacks?!), but there were some absolute winners here!
Check out my last taste test with Mrs B where we tried "normal" foods we'd never tried before: • Trying 8 Quirky Foods ...
My Patreons got an extra snack to check out for this in their exclusive version (which was nearly an hour long!), so if you want access to that video and hundreds more, you can join here: / mrbarrylewis

You really need to try authentic Mexican candy. It's a shock if you're not expecting it. Most are covered in chilli powder and salt. Not really spicy, but sometimes startling to Anglo palates. I highly recommend the "chicken lollipops." Mango or strawberry, yellow in colour and only a hint of the chilli powder and salt. And shaped like a roast chicken. 😂 Just beware of "pulpo de tamarindo." At least in the US, it's been banned because of the lead content.😳

@@mrbarrylewis Start with mazapán. It's basically just ground peanuts and confectioners sugar. Then, picas gomas... Or paletas de sandía. Watermelon lollipop usually really covered in chilli powder and salt. 😈 Or lollipops with tamarind. Shaped like a tamarind pod, but because of the chilli powder and, looks like it came out of a cat litter box.

Ramune (the e is spoken, so it's more like "ramunay") is a Japanese soda. The bottles are unique in that they're closed with a glass marble that you need to press in. And apparently when you turn the bottle upside down, the marble plugs it up again so you don't get spillage. Haven't had any ramune since I learned that, so I haven't tried it yet.

@@cyndirella23ramune is a Japanese rough verion of the word "lemonade." Although, in some places in UK and Europe, "lemonade" also refers to clear sodas such as lemon-lime and other citrusy soft drinks.

@@cyndirella23 I would not say apple cider is apple juice in the USA, but that would be because what we consider juice is different. So we have both apple juice and apple cider, two very different things.

10:35 Ramune is fizzy pop. Classic is lemon-lime flavour so the working theory is that it was introduced to the Japanese as Lemonade. There isn't really a hard L in Japanese so it becomes an R, Le-mon-ade becomes Ra-mu-ne

Daifuku is a type of mochi. Mochi is the traditional rice flour dumplings. You may have seen the old tradition of pounding the rice with the special mallet while a second person constantly flips it to pound it evenly. The powder on the outside is designed to prevent it sticking to your fingers as mochi/daifuku is very sticky being made from rice. For me the best flavour is the milk/custard centre ones or the melon flavoured however most popular in japan in the red vean paste centre. Conpeto is the japanese way of saying the western word confection/confectionery. It's kind of like sugar cubes only harder. If you really want to enjoy Japanese treats have pocky in all the different sweat flavours and then have the savoury variations known as pretz.

the Japanese always have some peculiar flavours you can't get anywhere else, for better or worse. Those "toe nail" things have the same size and shape as Kim's Cheese Shrimp - which is a Danish snack and don't actually contain shrimp, but they have the same shape as peeled shrimp. It's the closest we get to Cheetos in Denmark, but nowhere near as good.

Hey don't diss the corn potage umaibo (oo-my-boh) without trying them! For real they're so nice (shame I've only had them a few times pre-covid 💀) another fave of mine were the wasabi beef premium umaibo... Edit : Ramune (r/lah-moo-neh) is a brand of (typically) glass bottled carbonated Japanese drinks that you have to push down a glass ball at the top to be able to drink out of it, so the sweets named from it likely use it in the making or are made to taste like it.
