I love how, even being the "funny sidekick" kind of character, there is depht in Jaskier's character. Its more than obvious that he feels his emotions really deeply, and you can easily see that when he sings Burn Butcher Burn with a smile on his face as he dances around people who admire him, but then as quickly and deeply you see this sadness and pain in his eyes as if he wasnt singing to a crowd anymore. It also amazes me how deeply he cares about people around him, specially now that he is older - there was so much care in the way he spoke with Yen and even when he felt somehow betrayed he had to express how much he missed Geralt. And, obviously, there is this sadness when he talks about his art, about how he is scared about loosing it. About loosing his inspiration or having his music taken from him. You can feel his fear and his love for what he does. Whoever was in charge of the casting, they did gods work by choosing Batey

People argue that the whole 'no artist is safe' thing is meant literally and it is, but that's ignoring the fact that the artistic and queer communities have always been intertwined. The bohemian movements in Victorian England were often about more liberal thought and self expression, which included queerness in a sort of hush-hush way. It's why queer readings of Sherlock Holmes point out how closely Holmes is tied with the Bohemian lifestyle, and Doyle's fascination with people like Oscar Wilde. So when Jaskier says 'artist' he means this community of free thinkers, artists and yes, queer people. And that's not even mentioning the rather out of place use of the phrase 'the other', which I believe is quite modern. The subtext is pretty clear. But it would be nice if they would just come out and confirm Jaskier is bi, we don't need to be this coy in 2021-2022. Though Netflix doesn't have a great history of not cancelling gay stuff either so iunno.

I just want to say, I love how supportive you are when you say that whether it’s platonic or romantic, it is love and it’s real. I’m aroace and given that I can’t experience romantic love, I have a hard time explaining that what I feel is not romantic love but that doesn’t mean I can’t have my heart broken, or I can’t look at a person with love and just want to enjoy having them in my life. literally every queer person hearing jaskier's speech about the elves and say "the other" knew immediately what he meant by that. like you could be unsure before, but that is just such a queercoded and loaded line- its actually a pretty common line for queer characters in other shows and films. and some people go "well he immediately said artist" may not realise just how much the queer and artist communities are intertwined and have been throughout history- a LOT of famous artists, whether writers or painters or singers or what have you, throughout history, have been queer or been deeply connected to the queer community, and the artist community was known for being open and inviting of queer people. like literally for centuries. that was a solid and pretty clear nod to being queer without the show outright saying it

The line about the elves, at the end, it makes me think about this thing I heard once, and I can't remember where, but it was essentially, and I'm putting it in the context of the show here, "first they came for [the elves], and I said nothing because I was not [an elf]. Then they came for [the dwarves], and I said nothing because I was not [a dwarf]. And then they came for me, and there was no one left to say anything for me." Just got me thinking.

Soo fun fact, queer subtext like this in media has been a thing for ages, mostly from when television still had heavy censorship laws. It was basically to let the audience know a character is LGBTQ+ without being explicitly obvious. The downside is that it's so subtle, it's easy to play off as something else. Example, when he says "Anyone they deem the other--", obviously someone who's queer would clock that right away with the way Joey Batey delivers it (and as someone who has dabbled in professional acting, I can tell you Joey Batey definitely does everything he does with a very specific reason in mind), but anyone who hasn't lived that experience probably wouldn't connect the dots. It just sucks that so much media still uses this subtext when it's not required anymore. It leads to people still insisting he's straight because it's considered the default, and the script never bluntly shows anything otherwise. I just hope the showrunners are planning on going somewhere with it in later seasons, after all the obvious hints they've dropped. Not saying Jaskier is going to end up macking on Geralt, because I genuinely enjoy seeing a healthy emotional male friendship in media, but that one line about "the other" caught my interest and I want to see where that came from.
