During the last year of his life Ed established a great relationship with Carter's so it didn't surprise me to see Carters sell his collection. He shared his instruments with others when he was alive, he loved to play them. Jason will use it well, I would bet that Ed would be happy about that.

I wonder who bought the one that Ed had that he played on The Lynyard Skynyrd band with Ronnie Van Zant. I saw an interview of Ed Kings where he had it and his wife had bought it back for him and it was in bad shape and he had it repaired and he told the name of the man who repaired it for him but I can't remember the man's name.

Jason didn't buy Red-Eye because it was Ed Kings. He bought it because it was very, very special; which is why Ed owned it. Ed was a musician first; as is Jason and they both found a little magic in this guitar

That guitar must have been at least 500K. Its a 59 for starters, and it was Ed Kings. I saw that Ed's Strat used on Sweet Home Alabama was in Carters for 450K.....so Im guessing that LP went for a lot more. Isbell must be making some good dough these days. Hard to believe hes got it out on the road with him. Im glad its getting played and all, but the risks having it out on tour are many.

Actually... Joe's in financial trouble. He's been selling A LOT of his bursts and Signature Gibson Prototypes. (Plus he's been "joking" about being broke/in debt quite a bit.) I've seen several of his well known bursts for sale online and every time he goes to Norm's, he's handing over another prototype to pay off his tab. I live out in Hawaii and just had one of his prototype Bigsby Gold Top Relics at my studio a few weeks ago.. ...if that tells you anything about how much he's flooded the market lately. Lol

I love Les Pauls, but the reverence and awe people have for 58-60 bursts is just absurd. They're just guitars. How many people played those things in music shops when they were new and didn't buy them? I'm not saying they aren't great guitars but they're just fucking guitars. I wouldn't even want to take one out on the road, the freaking switch tip on that thing is probably 5 grand.
@timf7413
@timf7413 4 жыл бұрын
Sure, but if you can afford it and are in a position where you'll likely never have to sell it, why not? It's not what I would do with that kind of cash even if I did have it to spend on a leisure item, but if somebody's into guitars and does, it's not really that different from any other kind of collecting or expensive hobby IMHO.
@Vichedges
@Vichedges 4 жыл бұрын
@@timf7413 I'm not knocking paying that much for one as a collectible, that's not my point. My point is all these people who act amazed EVERY time they see or hear a vintage burst. They're just mass produced guitars. I get thinking they're cool, I get them being valuable because of their scarcity and the fact that so many famous musicians used them....I get that they sound great......but they're not supernatural....they're just guitars. Like I said we've all heard the stories of those things sitting sometimes for years in music stores because no one wanted them when they were new. Then a few years later Clapton, Page etc use them and now people pay hundreds of thousands, even millions, for them and act like you're ignorant and tone deaf if you dare to say it's just a guitar lol.

its the wood mostly...it has cells....full of water and oils when cut....as it ages, the water and the oils dry out, creating tiny little echo chambers...tens of thousands of them...combined, they create a 'singing' tone...

Heard someone demo that Alabama strat on youtube, honestly sounded like "a strat" to me (and I've been floored by pricey vintage guitars before, I don't deny them all). And also heard Ed play parts of the song on a different Strat, of course sounded just like the recording. It's all in the fingers, but people obsess about gear mythicality, Ed probably knew than and made good money on his old guitar he didn't like to use.

Is it right that the corners of the headstock are a little bit different to each other because the template was hand-drawn and one is a tiny bit sharper than the other? I'm just thinking that it might be because when you trace around the template the pencil lead is going to face into the template on one side but because you're right or left-handed the pencil might not trace at the same angle on the other corner. A CNC machine doesn't mind but humans are a little bit one-sided.
