Do you want to know the easiest way to transition from playing a 6 string guitar to a 7 string guitar? Do you already have a 7 string guitar but still struggling to play it?
You’re going to get 3 TIPS to help you with this transition from 6 to 7 string guitar (I’m assuming you play metal!!)
I’ll admit, this was a tough thing for me. In fact, I almost gave up and sent my 7 string back! I’m glad I didn’t.
So I’m going to share my pain points with you, and how I got over them!
These 3 tips may be hard to digest because I know as soon as you get your hands on that 7 string, you’re gonna wanna go for that heavy B string!
I’m going to ask you to refrain!! Actually, I don’t want you touching that B string at least for a week!
But why???? I wanna play heavier stuff!!!
Trust me on this...the goal is to not only play 7 string metal, but to also stay competent in play all the other strings!
Tip 1 - Don't touch the B string yet (for about a week). Play your normal metal riffs on the other strings that you're used to playing on
Tip 2 - Play full chords (like you're playing acoustic)
Tip 3 - Gradually integrate that B string
Doing it this way will help you become accustomed to play your new 7 string guitar without losing your 6 string skills.
Let me know if this video helped you, and what was your greatest challenge when transitioning from a 6 string to 7 string guitar? Leave that in the comments below!
Oh, and SHARE this video with the metal world!!
Keep it Metal,
Jason

I've only had mine for a day, and the hardest thing has definitely been playing the inner strings. My brain is used to the D and G being in the center. Now they are a little further over, which is a bit confusing. I have already been integrating the low B string into stuff I normally play. It's really cool and gives old riffs a new dynamic.

@@jasonstallworth Same here I've begun playing 7-string about a month ago (but from time to time I just slip back to my 5-string bass because I'm always torn between guitar and bass and I love both, but on the bass I have an easier time transcripting different tunings, cause I don't have to worry about tuning, especially regarding drop [note] one-finger chords). Still getting used to the new range (especially since its a multiscale), but I know it's a keeper for me, as soon as a guitar tech can adjust it just fine with new strings (Ernie Ball 7-String Power Slinky, I'm a sucker for Ernie Ball since I started playing guitar).

@@Cyclobomber Dude, there is nothing like a 5 string bass! That's what made my prior albums sound heavier. Many thought I down-tuned for those albums but they were recorded with a 6 string guitar, standard tuning. You can hear those here (scroll down to my prior albums - the recent one, Masterpeace, was 7 string): jasonstallworth.com/music

@@jasonstallworth I know I loved my 5-string as soon as I realised I could play Slipknot (Drop B), Pantera (Drop C), Dark Tranquillity or Snot (Drop C#), Swashbuckle (D standard) AND regular E/Eb stuff without touching anything, and I just love playing bass when I want to focus on rythm & groove instead of chords. Thanks for the link, I'll check it soon.

Jason, is it impractical to play both 6 and 7 string guitars? I’m a new 7 string player, and I feel like when I get used to 7 strings, I become sloppy on 6 strings, and vice versa.

Playing everything I learned on 6 strings on my 7 made me feel like I wasted so much time learning all those chords. Then I did exactly what you said and pretended the B string wasn't there and it made ALL the difference. Now I don't even own a 6 string electric lol.

I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, 7-string for about 10. And I gotta say, before I clicked, I guessed all the 3 tips. I had EXACTLY the same problems when I was starting out on my 7-string Mayones. This vid would have helped a lot back then. All this comes even more into play when talking about 8-strings, because you can't really treat them the same way and play power chords all the time; you can get away with it on a 7-string, but not on 8. Great tips, listen to this dude.

Hi Jason. Thanks for the video. Makes a lot of sense when transitioning from 6 to 7. Not in a million years did I think I would move to a 7 string guitar, until... I heard Edge of Paradise. The sound, alongside 80s type riffs, with sweep picking blew my mind, so I've bought a decent 7 String to get me started. Definitely a period of adjustment. My biggest hurdle “for me” was how to tune this new beast of mine. So I learned to tune my G to an f# and then u can use the 7th-2nd string just like a normal 6. Rule of thumb, anything big brother can do, little brother can to. So if your finger is on the Low E, say, on the third fret? Make sure your holding the same fret on the high E. Same goes with the low and high B. Will make for some fully awesome sounding cords

Thank you for this video. It has helped me a lot with the transition. If I may add something, for tip 1 play songs that are not difficult but that have constant string change. A good example is I Am the Black Wizards by Emperor. The tremolo picking between A, D and G plus the open chords will help you adjust to your new guitar. There are lots of songs like this one around. The transition was a bit trickier than I initially thought but like you said in this video, keep on playing the 7 string instead of your 6 string for a while and it becomes natural. I picked up a jackson slattxmg3 soloist 7 string about a year ago and it's been pretty much collecting dust...EXACTLY for the problems you mentioned in this video ironically!!! I'm going to try your advice and get used to playing this thing if it kills me. I started playing 70s and 80s hard rock/metal around 1985 on a 6 string. Later in my life I transitioned from 22 fret guitars to 24. It doesn't sound like much but the extra 2 frets and longer scale length really throws off your game for a while due to muscle memory!!! Lol (I'm sure I'm not the only one). BUT now I have this beast of a guitar and was ready to dive into some slipknot, korn, soad, and other downtuned metal greats without having to deal with spaghetti strings...it was a lot more complicated than I thought it would be! Thank you for the tips!!!

Damn it ! You are so right ! I got my first 7 string a few month before you released this video. At first I was like "not using the 7th string to get used to the guitar ? what ? really ? Does he know what he's talking about ???? How am I supposed to get used to it if I don't play it ???" :) But actually you are so right, I had to spend quite some time to play only the first 6 strings, to let my brain figure out that this extra string is not the same as the 6th string. At first I felt so confused and uncomfortable with the neck width, but that was because I was playing it as a regular 6 string. As awkward as it sounded, that advice is gold ! Cheers !

After having played 7 string for a long time, i've really wanted to share this trick i've learned to make 7 string guitars a lot easier to play. There are some 7 string players that tune the G string down a half step from whatever they're tuning too. In my case, i tune to Bb Standard, so i'd tune my G String down to F. This alows you to play all of your strings from the low B to the high B just like a 6 string, but with a high e for added range.
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 2 жыл бұрын
I say whatever works best for you, do it. I'm just not a fan of messing with alternate tunings (I know some are). These days, when playing my 7 string, I don't use that lowest string all of the time. Many will play the B string most of the time but will start to neglect the other strings and frets.
@Stretchwreckedem469
@Stretchwreckedem469 2 жыл бұрын
@@jasonstallworth i definitely get that. The tuning i was talking about definitely makes the 7 string kind of feel like a different instrument, but because of the finger positions from B to B being the exact same as a regular standard tuned 6 string guitar, the only thing that i needed to get acclimated too was incorporating the High E into my playing. I'd say if you ever do wanna mess around with other tunings to try it out through a clean amp. You'll be able to play entire chords across all 7 strings, and that's one big reason why i started playing in that tuning!

Have a 7 string for about 2 months. Went straight to playing the 7 string as soon as I got the guitar. Now 2 months later I'm having challenges playing the full 6 string chords that I've been playing since the 80s. Started to realize that I have to become familiar with playing all my 6 string music on the 7 string guitar first without playing the 7th string. Then like your instruction go to the 7th string comfortably. Otherwise my playing is becoming sloppy and I've losing my 6 string reference points (low E string).
