But he's wrong about Betamax vs VHS. Betamax couldn't compete against VHS because of the 2 hour record limitation of VHS, while VHS could record up to 6 hours in EP mode.

I pretty much watch all the Jay Leno content that comes out, I'm a huge fan, I even was a guest on his Game Show! And I have to say this was the best interview I've seen of Jay. I feel like Jay, like all celebrities is always being asked the same questions so naturally he has a set of stories that make for good responses, which is great, but as a fan, I have heard all of those stories multiple times, this was a great interview, because the questions were new and unique and overall very good, it allowed for Jay to give some really great new answers. Very entertained by this.

Ah the wisdom of age. Jay is great and only exemplifies why we need to value our grandparents’ life experiences. Not everything they say is necessarily correct, sane or appropriate, but there are bits of gold that we need to remember about how we used to live. Bringing up the beta v vhs (not vcr) war was accurate but lost on probably 50% of listeners. May he keep telling these stories for years to come! 🎉

Jay Leno is an absolutely brilliant car historian with his mainstream-popularity comedy career overshadowing his, in my opinion, greater talent in his knowledge of cars. Love the amusingly recounted Stanley Steamer anecdotes about its silence upon start up (compared to the urban legend of being loud and unwieldy), as well as getting it up to 91 F---in miles per hour on the 405 Freeway! Between the hilariety of visualizing the situation of trying to explain this to the fuming cop, and being able to achieve that speed in a Veteran Car, just fantastic!

I admire Jay, he's the icon of what a rich celebrity should be. He educates himself and buys cars because they have some interesting technology or history, never to show off how rich he is or to make him appear "manly". I was fortunate enough to meet him years ago and he's just a regular person, if you didn't know you'd have no idea how rich or famous he was. A very humble and hard working guy.

But, he's wrong about Betamax. It didn't lose due to VHS monopolist behavior. It lost because it was limited to 2 hour record time at greatly reduced quality, while VHS tapes could record up to 6 hours of video. Similarly, EVs aren't the first car most new drivers choose not due to ICE car monopolistic marketing, but because a 2013, 101,000 mile, RWD Tesla sells for $20,000 on Craigslist, while used ICE cars can be had for under $2,000.

I remember when I worked for Ford , Ford was trying to decide between three plants which plant they were going to close. They would load up in a club wagon and drive through the employees parking lot and count how many foreign cars and cars from other manufacturers were in the parking lot. They decided to close the plant that had the most other cars.

At the end of the interview he mentioned enjoying talking to people who built their own cars... To Jay: I tried multiple times to contact you about checking out my car, "Midlana" but your staff never replied. No "Unfortunately we aren't interested", no "we're busy", and not even a simple "no", or "we'll think about it." Might want to talk to them about screening out undesirables :(

I count my wife, and I extraordinarily lucky to have met Mr. J Leno. He is truly the genuine person that you see in this interview. They say never meet your heroes. That idiom does not apply to meeting Mr. Leno. He is probably the most genuine person I have ever met. The fact that he’s a huge Hollywood celebrity makes it that much more rare. That is even true of the people that he works with. I count myself lucky to be able to say I made friends with one of the people he works with. He’s truly a great guy. It takes a guy like Mr. Leno to attract such great talent. Hollywood could learn a lot from Mr. Leno if they ever opened their eyes and ears. Not to mention the White House and all politicians can learn the philosophies, that Mr. Leno personally has. You could tell Mr. Leno never received a participation trophy when he was younger. He worked for what he has, and it shows, his work ethic is extraordinarily admirable… Thank you Mr. Leno for enriching the lives of so many. Your show in Atlantic City was fantastic just after Covid. You truly brought joy and relief to every person in that room including my wife and I.

21:19 ~1990, the EPA had required each state to improve its air quality. Some states decided to require cars be tested every year at registration renewal (TN) and some states decided every other year (LA). Tennessee just decided last year to do away with vehicle emission testing.

I worked at a quick oil change place in early 90s and we also did emission testing. You can fail the test three times, prove you attempted to make improvement via spending 50$ towards oil change and air filter etc and would be given a pass on the 3rd test. Big densely populated cities should be concerned with air pollution, most other areas, it is a moot point. This is where blanket laws really, even with the best intentions, do more harm. Case in point, newer freon for air condition units car or appliances. The newer refrigerants eat the oring seals faster, making replacing seals, leaks and purging the system expel more refrigerant into the atmosphere, and… there is no definite link between refrigerant causing damage to ozone etc, that was an unproven and still unproven theory based on models, not actual science. Yes, in densely populated cities,, electric would reduce local pollution which is more of a public health concern than an environmental concern.

I love Jay. Some of his collection modified, some absolutely stock, some restored, some not. I love how he is not bias for or against anything. He is agnostic on everything.fantastic wit , humour and observation skills. He is a wonderful historian as well. I would love if he had a couple of Australian muscle cars in his collection, even if they have some US DNA. EVs in Australia just do not stack up like they do in California. They really are still just for enthusiasts. Or short distance city commuters with lots of money and a charger in their garage.

I have to commend the long range forecast and thinking of companies in Australia and New Zealand that are placing electric drive systems in semis with removable batteries allowing quick " refueling" and therefore unlimited range. Given that Australia imports 96 % of their fossil fuel and having an abundance of solar exposure, it makes sense to move toward a resource such as solar a smart move. In Norway, Sweden, China etc. they are already installing facilities that remove the battery pack from cars and install a fresh recharged battery. These batteries are then recharged properly and as a side benefit allows greater utilization of charging facilities and greater utilization of transportation vehicles.

That ,if it is actually feasible, is the only way it would work. If so, fantastic. But at this stage it ain’t happening, and Elon’s truck is just not going to be competitive. Transport companies run on tight margins.

Man I can relate to eating dinner on Sunday at my Italian grandparents house you would think it was thanksgiving because there was enough food for a football team lol, the men were not allowed to do anything we sat on the couch watching tv and talking if one of us got up to get a drink or something the woman yelled at us and said to sit down and rest you worked hard this week we will get you what you want, then after dinner if we picked up our plates to help clean up we got yelled at to go relax. When I would leave my grandma would give me 5 or 10 bucks for gas haha. When I went to my grandma’s after work during the week she could have broken legs and she would say I’m fine I’m gonna make you something to eat and she makes all this stuff haha man I miss my grandparents!

The change over is probably going to be like the change from horses. My mom was telling me a few days ago that all the vendors that came to her house in Long Island still used their horses and carts. The ice man the milk man and the vegetable guy. She’s in her 101 year. My grandad was a fireman in Brooklyn and he had the last horse drawn engine in the city in their department. I was pleased to hear that Jay's first car he bought was a Buick Skylark 401GS. That was my first new car as well. I absolutely loved that car, but mine suffered the same fate as Jay's. I wrecked it. I don't know how he wrecked his, but I wrecked mine racing a Mustang HP.

The problem with steam is it took awhile before the steam pressure built up so that you could actually move the thing under its own power. Gas won because it's safe, it's easy to transport, you can refuel your car quickly, and it has the highest energy density for it's weight and volume.

We don't "hate" EVs. We just can't can't see the benefit(s) of ever owning one. We actually believe they're as benefitisl as the public electric scooters in Santa Monica .

Why is everyone forgetting LNG as fuel? Our local trash trucks have run in it for years. Low maintenance, and very low emissions too. Also acts like premium gas that it is more resistant to knock.

Probably because it takes so much energy to produce it. But it’s probably still better than lithium batteries.
