That's so awesome--often wonder if these reaction vids are seen by the artists. I grew up in the same part of H-town as Billy and Dusty--went to the same high school 16 years after them. Knew where their first studio was. My first boyfriend's older brother went to school with them and had the Cadillac featured in "Mexican Blackbird" ...HOMETOWN BOYS! ...There was this other episode when I was 14, they were majorly famous, and Dusty was visiting his mom and I was biking to my friends and when I jumped off my bike to walk in the complex and saw him (and was like WHOA!) and he asked if I knew where to get some coke. LOL. I did NOT unfortunately, as that ended the convo ;-)

I just love the way Jamel appreciates great music. His reactions are honest and it gives me hope that maybe others in the younger generation will not let the music from our past die. I want to see him do some early 60's Motown songs...the 4 tops, the Supremes, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson, etc. When I was a kid in the 60's, I loved all great music and did not care about the skin color of who was making it. I am in my 60's now and still feel the same way.

Lots of rap and hop fans are ignorant of the progression of music because they think if it's old it's dumb. And that just ain't so. I can give you a musical history progression that'll get you from Buddy Holly to Kanye West, with stops by Johnny Cash and Sex Pistols in addition to the people you expect [Chuck Berry, Isaac Hayes, etc.]. “Took a jog thru Mississippi, well muddy water turned to wine” - best lyric in rock, such a good turn of phrase. Muddy Waters was a major influence on the band, and this ties in so perfectly. So good.

I was always told as a youngster that Billy G wrote Jesus Just Left Chicago as a tribute to Eric Clapton, and that it is telling the musical journey that Eric went through... that gives new meaning to Muddy Waters turned to wine!

That lyric "You might not see him in person but he'll see you just the same. .You don't have to worry 'cause takin' care of business is his name'. Must be be about JC.
@two_thongs_dont_make_a_kite3 жыл бұрын
Whats even more clever is that the JC here is actually a dope dealer making the rounds. Back in the day when I was an addict, I went to many dark places to buy my fix, and the seller would not see me in person, but he would see me just the same, meaning he would still do business thru a 3rd party for his own protection. Hope this sheds light on what the song is really about.

@@two_thongs_dont_make_a_kite Wow Brother, that is kind of a haunting story. I hope you're doing well these days. I never knew all that about this song.

This is PURE Texas FUNK! "Jesus Just Left Chicago" is an amazing song! You are expected to have smoked a few bong hits before you get to the chorus of the song! It hits like a hammer! ZZ Top are one of the best bands capable of doing this! GOD - You should see them performing this on stage! There is NOTHING like this, anywhere!
@davefl673 жыл бұрын
They call them "That Little Ol' Band From Texas" for a reason, man! They are steeped in rockin' blues. I can only think of two three-piece bands with that much of a powerful sound, and they are ZZ Top and Rush. Both bands have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, by the way.

Early ZZ Top so funky.....when I first heard them I was blown away. I was so sure that the lead vocalist was black . Bought the album saw the cover ... wait a minute where the black guy??? Billy Gibbons has so much soul in his voice and of course one of best guitar players to ever been born. Listen to the only cover that I know of “ I Thank You” the Sam and Dave hit. Soulful and with a little bit Texas blues added for flavor. So smooth.....

The best part? In concert, they sound exactly like that. I've seen Metallica, REM, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffet, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels and others live, and they were good, but ZZ Top was the best concert I've ever been to. Definitely the best seats I ever had. My buddy and I swapped our nosebleeds and cash for 13th row center. They played a bunch of songs off the album they were touring to support (Recycler), but then got into a greatest hits / greatest B-side blues fest. Amidst the standing, cheering, swaying floor crowd, Rob and I looked at each other like "what are we doing?," and 5 seconds later there we were, sitting down, feet kicked up, just getting soaked in unfiltered ZZ Top blues greatness.

In my Life I have seen them 7 times. Truly unreal! They are other Rockstar's fans orite band. One concert they were in greasy looking coveralls with rag hanging outta the back pocket. Like they had worked on the tour bus.
