This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Composition and Melodic Development.
Composing a melody is much like improvising, just not spontaneous. That is, you can go back and modify what you’re written. Writing a song is a very personal and subjective thing and there’s no right or wrong method to doing it.
There are 4 basic musical elements:
- Melody,
- Harmony,
- Rhythm,
- Timbre.
And various genres of music place differing levels of importance to each of these elements.
There are also 4 ways to analyse a melody:
- Intervallic,
- Motivic,
- Scalar,
- Harmonic
A widely used technique when writing creative stories is the Snowflake Method. I recommend using something similar when composing a song.
- Doodle about on the piano
- Accidentally discover a phrase you like
- Use that phrase as a motif
- Develop the motif into a melody
- Find another motif and link the two motifs together somehow
- Embellish your melody (by adding ornamentals, passing notes, etc)
- Harmonise the Melody with Chords (see my lessons on reharmonization. The same principles apply here)
- Arrange your composition (by adding a form, chord voicings, instrumentation, dynamics, etc.)

Kudos for the video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your thoughts. Have you researched - Riddleagan Smart Hands Remedy (do a google search)? It is a smashing one off guide for learning piano fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my old buddy Taylor after many years got astronomical success with it.

I start writing a song with chords & rhythm that give a "general feeling" of what the song will be about. I see it like a movie scene: the chords & rhythm is the background & setting, and the melody are the actors & dialogue. It's easier to write a good melody on top of an emotional background, easier than writing a melody on a blank canvas...

This is a really, really brilliant video. Perfectly presented, seriously thank you. The most important part for me 24:00 however, and i felt like I needed to know more about how you chose these chords. Perhaps this is the “reharmonization” you mentioned, I will have a look. Cheers.

Some ideas not exactly his thought process!: the simplest part is the chords going F# b e a d g which is basically just going down the fiths so F# is the fifth of b b the fifth of e and so on, the other chords are taking part ine the melody the lead note (the one on top) is also in the chord that means it harmonizes with it and doesnt have dissonance

Eventually, yes. I still need to have a think about what to present and how to structure it though. So it's a little while off yet.

Also, could you make a video where you explain how to approach classical music and how to practice it in terms of technique and the way it should be played

I'm afraid I'm much more competent in Jazz than Classical. There's heaps of really good Classical Piano channels out there already, I'm sure you could find something relating to approach and technique.

one thing. How does the process change when you write a song with lyrics?
@WalkThatBass
@WalkThatBass 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) Personally (and again, this is entirely subjective), I would write the melody first and then create lyrics to fit the melody. This is generally how songs are written (I'm thinking specifically of Tin Pan Alley songs where composers often employed lyricists to add lyrics to their already created melodies). But lyrics are flexible - you can sing one syllable over many notes (Melisma) or repeat a long note to fit more lyrics in. You can more or less make them fit over most melodies with enough effort - like just add the words 'my baby' or 'oh yeah' if you have extra notes to spare ;) Your main consideration would be the limitations of the singer. How experienced are they? How confident and competent are they? What is their range? Singers generally prefer smoother, steadier melodies that are comfortably in their singing range (unless you're writing for Ella Fitzgerald who can control her voice like a trumpet). Singers often struggle singing tritone intervals, or larger jumps. And may have trouble singing towards the extreme bottom and extreme top of their range.

Admire your work...but isn't this here too oversimplified? I mean, the melody you've created here has so much more than just heaping leaps & scale-steps...If I were to just improvise on my p lije that it would just come out a-tonal (nothing against, of course) and here with you - it's so Jazzy... I would like to learn how to write such a Jazzy melody. Great vid!

Humbleness aside, I write big band music. I'd say I'm *REALLY* good at writing background stuff (the stuff that the horns and saxes play during solos and such) But I can't write a starting melody for shit lol
