John Coltrane's beautiful tune 'Wise One ' from his Classic 'Crescent' album
provides the inspiration for this tutorial.
We take some of Pianist McCoy Tyner stunning harmonic ideas and use them to construct triad pairs which we then interpolate of a static minor chord evoking different sound emotions.

As a guitarist of 47 yrs, I find it much easier seeing these relationships on the piano. Or simply while writing notation (or going over the intervals and chord notes in my head) of what I was playing on guitar.

Lovely! Wonderful material and I'm so glad you're offering all these different triad pair videos. Great for both me and my students! By the way, I love the i minor / vii dim triad pair over the Dom 7#9 chord too - so for the B7#9 that would be Adim and Bm. It's also really nice to play triad pairs more linearly as hexatonic scales as well, as the six note scales the pairs create you could say are in the "Goldilocks" zone - not too dense, not too thin - leaving out the perfect amount of notes to give an identity to the inherent sound, while having enough tones to offer the ear the richness it craves. Keep up the great work!

I appreciate this lesson. Also... found it interesting the way you broke down some of McCoy Tyners chords over the drones etc. I purchased this. I’d REALLY enjoy a course on his voicings, technique. And a similar course on Bill Evans. The triad stuff was useful with guitar triads and a static Drone root. Thank you.

Hou là là ! Thank YOU for playing : what a tone and a pitch ! I maybe should go back to maracas ? but no, your video is so relaxing, instructive and inspiring that I'd rather go on with my sax and try all I can find on a pedal of one chord too deepen my feeling of the different colors. The genius of John Coltrale deserves such a magistral approach. And your english is very clear so as your interpretation and your commentaries. Hear you soon ! greetings from France.

I recall a highly illuminating conversation I had with McCoy Tyner one evening between sets. It seems that both of us were--and still are---very fond of the music of Paul Hindemith, one of my very favorite 20th-century composers, and he made extensive use of "quartal" and other similar chords in his composing, which simply grabbed me and would not let go!

There is NO way to capture the soul of such a great instrumentalists expressions with theory and inscriptions because the Great thing about Trane ,McCoy and all the greats is that it will never be revealed in the same manner.Thats the soul of African American Classical music baby!
@JazzDuets
@JazzDuets 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely brother! So true. The great thing for me about Trane and McCoy is that they tapped in to the eternal spirit we all come from and that they revealed this to us. The objective of analysing and transcribing is not to try to capture anything, that sounds aggresive The process of deep listening for me is enough in itself. It brings me closer to the masters and noursishes and heals me in a deep spiritual way. Bill Evans is part of this tradition as well , like Chet Baker and Art Pepper

Very nice and useful, as always. Just one question though: Wen using E- and B triads, as B is in the E-triad already... that would be like the previous example of E- and D triads, with a missing A, right?
