I always see a lot of hate in the comments about any military branch that is not the Marines. I would just like to share this comment I saw on r/army (reddit) a while back. Someone asked if people in the Army actually did think less of the Air Force or Navy and this guy responded and said something along the lines of "No we don't. We basically treat other branches like younger siblings. We make fun of them and call them names but it's all in good fun. None of us mean it. We all know that every branch is important and needed. It's when people who have never been in the military start making fun of other branches that create problems and need to stop." The majority of hate comments I see always seem to come from someone who is not in the military, so I figured this would be a good quote to post here.

ThePuppie1 I only hope people scroll down to read yours because it's all the hate comments that always come out on top. By the way it's the will to be in the military not just brains. The brains of the military (Air Force) doesn't just need smart minds, they need strong minds.

Kendall Davis The USAF is the coolest branch to be in, and you'll most likely get training in a job you can use in civilian life. The USAF has the best living conditions, food, etc. That's also a consideration to make when you're deciding what branch you want to go into. I was in the USAF back in the Vietnam era, and I made the right choice. I went from the USAF right into a high paying job in the FAA.

Phil Gibson What did you do in both the Air Force and the FAA?
@lp115lp
@lp115lp 9 жыл бұрын
USAF or NAVY, you'll get better chow and better barracks. In the NAVY you'll get better (more comprehensive) training in electronics simply because you can't run down to Radio-Shack when a part fails or the Electronics Mate comes down sick and a ship can only carry so many people. Everybody gets cross-trained in several skills to ensure operations are up.
@philgibson4896

cheezoncrack1 I was an electronics technician in both. It was darned good employment and the pay was nice. I'm retired now. I've heard many good things about Navy electronics education. Went through late 1964,was a Medic old AFSC 902, BMT was not that hard physically, do remember actually a rope climb up a cliff enjoyed my time at BMT. Was at Wurtsmith AFB MI then CCK AB in Taiwan Separated late 1968. January 1969 enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman and then a year later they sent me to their Field Medical Service School ( a mild boot camp for Medical personnel being assigned to Marine units) and they had REAL DI's, it was pretty hard compared to BMT. Really loved my entire 23 years in and wish I could do it all again.

Back in 1984 they called this the "Confidence Course" our TI's said it was a pass/fail test and we where only allowed to fail 2 obstacles out of the entire course. When I ran it there was a TI at every station along the way some askimg me questions along the way. I thought it was strange they where asking me questions about BMT while testing our agility. But maybe they where trying to give us mind breaks to get us off topic. That was the top 2 things I enjoyed most about BMT. The #1 was the firing range weapons qualifications. The #2 was the conficence course which is now B.E.A.S.T.

BMTS 3706 Flt 157 beginning Feb 8, 1984. Agreed 3 things most memorable... Day we arrived. Day we graduated and the Obstacle Course. When I went through USAF basic during the winter of 1974, it was cold and rainy on the day we did the “confidence” or obstacle course. Because it was cold and rainy, they would NOT allow us to cross the rope bridge over water or any obstacle that required us to crawl in the mud. They were afraid that if we got wet, we’d become hypothermic, end up getting sick and set back in training. I think we only did 2/3 of the obstacle course.

A note to all. As of Fall 2014 the "Obstacle Course" has been officially closed down and is no longer used as a part of BMT. It has been replaced by a team exercise during BEAST Week (wk 6) known as the CLAW Mission (Leadership Reaction Course). Its a shame to cause like the man said it was a great memory of BMT.

***** Its sort of hard to explain here but you are right it is move involved than just the simple obstacles. You are divided up into teams of 24 wearing full gear and carrying your M-16. Its a bit like the Marines' Crucible exercise only not nearly as involved of course but you will have to use all the skills you have learn at BMT in order for your team to pass the evaluation over the 1.3 mile course which takes about 2-2.5 hrs to complete. Its no longer just an individual physical fit test but now includes problem solving as well as the physical as a group. To pass the entire 24 man group must pass the exercise so you have to work as a team.

why would i need to carry an M-16 to have done either of my past air force jobs? Supply and or loading aircraft? This just seems Dumb and more then likely the confidence course was more than likely done away with the way school yard games no longer exist, someones butt got full of sand, they cried to Mommy, Mommy held court with some yahoo and Boom no more course. I sat behind a desk in Norad, Behind Multiple desks over seas, and loaded many an aircraft, I didnt need FULL GEAR or a GUN, just the ability to lead follow or get out of the way. and the Job and or Task was ALWAYS completed, the dummies were weeded out....... But we need good cooks also.

Doyle Hodges Its done to familiarize you with a bare base environment when on deployment. At least this way they have at least some basic experience as to what they might encounter, for more and more deployments are to a bare base setup these days. I'd rather have some initial experience at BMT than going in totally cold and clueless.

My experience with the obstacle course was back in 1967. It was easier then. We had to wear caps. We were scheduled to do it two times over the six-week basic training back then. I only did it once because I had dorm guard duty. It was sort of fun. I didn't get wet. Basic training was much easier until 9/11.

AF 61-67, Times have really changed. TI laughing and telling jokes to recruits, acting like a big brother, no weapon when crawling on belly, no barbed wire, no machine gun firing over head, no night maneuvers, pulling yourself over a pool of clean water. I could do all of this and I am 76 yrs .old. I get it that the AF probably will never fire a weapon in combat , but some of us had to in certain situations. Hats off to all military personal, that's also a word from the past and not used, we are human resources, like, food resources, financial resources. Dehumanized. I watched like a thousand of marine bootcamp videos and already set my mindset to be mentally and physically ready for the marine because of my peer pressure since all my high school friends went to the marine and now I going Air Force so I felt like everything in BMT will be so easy since I’m mentally and physically ready for the marines like I can do 28 pull-ups and such and I now I feel like a b*ch but then again I’m trying to be a PJ to salvage my honor 😂

Looks like they changed it from when I did this in 2005. In the very beginning there where two water obstacles. One was you had to swing across a moat with a rope and the second was a static rope that you use to ranger crawl over about 50 feet and being these were first if you fell in you had to do the whole coarse soaking wet and a lot heavier. My favorite obstacle was the rock face you had to repel down.

I remember going through this about 45 years ago.I had fun going under the barbed wire obstacles; until the blank cartridge rounds from a gun started sending rounds above us and the simulated mines going off with a Pop or muffled boom 💥! Doing all that with my DI screaming through a bullhorn, " Get that fat ass of yours down ; keep your head down, and move -it, move-it ! Hey you, in the front, move that ass now ! The most fun was rappeling down the wall, which had wooden boards embedded in rock, and we had to swing from side to side going down. Of course we had a DI on the top of the wall rappelling course and one at the bottom screaming 😱 at us, " You secure your safety belt to your line, begin and follow the others and don't look down , and move your ass quickly ! There's 10 more behind you, and you got one minute to finish. Now, haul ass Trainee ! " Afterwards, we were introduced to " C-Rations or K-Rations " , which was the worst food to eat 🤔 . We all double-timed running to the barracks and took turns in the latrine ; as the rations made us all sick 😫. Nobody criticized the mess hall food after the rations we had to eat in the field ! I got a fruitcake baked in 1930 ? It was black and hard as a rock ; I couldn't break it, chip it, or bite into it at all ! Would've made a great paperweight though, a doorstop, a hockey puck, or in case of emergency 🤔 as a deadly weapon ! Just needed some skivvies to fashion a slingshot with and that cake 🎂 could kill small game or a human being with it ! LOL 😆, now !

Yea BMT can be a real pain in the ass...lol. But honestly there are a lot of fun activities and learning experiences you will participate in and when you're done you'll be glad you took part. No one likes the yelling and humiliation that gets heaped on your head at times but its designed to get you motivated as a team. Just keep your head about you; do what you're told in the manner in which you are told to do it and you enjoy your time at BMT when you look back on it and you even have a few laughs along the way but sorry the obstacle course portion of BMT is no more as I wrote above.

When I was in the USAF, back in the days of the Wright Brothers, we had what was called the "Confidence Course," which was an obstacle course. They decided to give it a nice name. A lot of it was fun - swinging on a rope over a pond, like Tarzan. Some of it was not that fun, though. Interesting that they cut out that part of BMT. The pretend-combat part they added seems useless. They don't put expensive jets in combat areas for obvious reasons. I was in the Vietnam War, and never saw a day of combat.
