Aside from the broken exhaust hanger, smashed steering stablizer, jacked up front differential drain bolt and of course, the bit of body damage that I gave our Jeep JL Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited on our most recent Rubicon Trail run, I've had a number of people ask if maybe we found anything else that might have got damaged as well. Being that it had been over 8 months since we gave JET Li a thorough once over, we thought now would be a good a time as any to rack him up and give everything a closer look. And, in this episode of the JL JOURNAL, you get to see how things have been holding up. We hope you enjoy.

Nice overview of the trail rash. Saw the Rubicon trail video and the door jam damaged repairs came out great. Better then I expected. Planning our trip to the 2019 EJS in Moab next Spring in our mostly stock 2016 JKU and hoping to see you there. Safe Travels and God Bless!

Another great video, Eddie & Cindy! Your trail damage doesn't look bad considering the places you've driven your Rubicon. I'm delighted to see you had the "damage" immediately taken care of so your JL "looks as good as new." My wife and I were reunited a week ago today with our Rubicon here on the Island of Molokai. We've decided within the past few months to move here permanently. We'll do so as soon as we sell our house in Utah. Great and extremely helpful videos---as always! Mahalo (Thank you)!

Great follow up video after your wheeling trip. A little damage is going to happen, but it hurt to watch your rocker panel on the right-side get tweaked by that rock. Those guys did a real nice job! If I'm being honest, the Rubi JLU is far more capable than I would of thought going in to something like the Rubicon Trail (no offense intended in any way implied or intended here). I watched your Rubi video, and it really looked punishing but it held up well and I'm completely impressed. Also, nice to the Calamity Jane too. Great job you two!

You need MetalCloak’s JL Undercloak Armor System. Go to Lite Brite and watch the video of the installation on their JLU. They beat the hell out of their Wrangler and the skid plates hold up great.
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure why. Seems that the underside of our JL held up just fine and the factory skids did their job well. I would like to protect the transmission cooler lines and oil pan but I prefer to run EVO ProTek skids. Ran them on my JK for years and did their job great.

BTD53 I’ve been wondering if there was going to be a undercarriage armor install.
@davidmoran6398
@davidmoran6398 4 жыл бұрын
I’m not convinced here. Weight, airflow/cooling issues for the transmission, etc. seems the factory ones are holding over a lot of hard wheeling - Eddie how many miles? -can always swap with someone else’s factory castoffs and would be cheaper/lighter/better cooling to just do that three times in a row vs the big move. Something to be said for disposable.

@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly, they're wearing really well for an MT. On this Jeep, we have about 15k on them and they still look like new. On our JK, we maybe have close to 30k and they still look great too. I tend to rotate once every other oil change to help keep them quite.
@Colorado4x4

Great video. Thank you for convincing me not to buy a JL. I see a lot of annoyances that I wouldn’t want to fiddle with for the price. You would think they would have made some more improvements from the JK learnings. Granted, the front driveline disconnect is great, the EVAP canister location is way better, but get out of here with the front diff drain bolt and the rear driveline hitting the gas tank skid. Yea right. The stoutest piece on your rig are the control arms, wheels and tires. 😉
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
Well, fortunately, it's still a Jeep and building it up with better stuff is easy to do. The drain plug issue can be addressed with a Rancho glide plate and the driveshaft making contact with the gas tank can be addressed with a track bar relocation bracket - something we haven't installed yet.

Just found Wayalife. Love the channel and this video in particular! Damaged front Dana 44 diff on my 2019 Rubicon on Coyote Lake trail this weekend. Looks like the damage in this video and I had a leak. Bought new plug and in cleaning up the old plug to get it out of the housing it was very loose and almost "fell" out. Now I can't get the new plug to thread in even though I can feel and see threads in there. Thoughts on next steps? Chase threads in the housing (I've never done that)? Looks as though replacing the housing would be a major repair, and beyond my capability.
@wayalife
@wayalife 3 жыл бұрын
You need to run a tap through the hole. It's a pipe thread so make sure you get a tap set made for it.
@brucelewis7587
@brucelewis7587 3 жыл бұрын
@@wayalife HUGE thanks for the help! Was able to make the repair today. Never heard back from Jeep technical help on the thread specs for the drain in the differential housing. I got your reply and then I was also able to contact Antoinette at Dana (spicerparts.com), she spent a lot of time with me trying to track the spec. You can't trace it back from the Mopar magnetic plug (6840 1316 AAQ) even though that would make sense. Eventually, she came back with a spec of .500 x 14 NPTF. I had already tried a bunch of tap & die sets trying to match up the plug but I wasn't sure and knew I didn't want to do this wrong. Your answer and the Dana info led me to Harbor Freight and their 6 pc Pipe Tap Set ($55.00) with the 1/2" x 14 NPT tap. Worked beautifully, changed both differentials and drove around for a few minutes in 4x4 and then changed the front again just to make sure no metal fragments were in there. Be servicing my own differentials from now on. We have full belly armor from RockHard 4x4, but never put on a differential slider. Guess what I'm doing next?

If all you're gonna run is 35's, it's a great kit. If you have a Rubicon, 37's will work as well especially as a daily driver. If you spend a lot of time on the rocks, a slightly taller lift might be something you'd want to look into if you have a 4-door.

Can a completely stock 2 door JL Rubicon do the Rubicon trail with out any trail damage? Can't afford to put a lift and 37" tires on right now. All the videos I watch don't show to many stock Jeeps with 33" tires. Don't mind swallowing my pride and taking bypasses if necessary. Mainly would just like to get up there for the scenery. Good job on all your videos. Keep up the good work. You have a new subscriber here.
@wayalife
@wayalife 3 жыл бұрын
Without "any" damage. That's hard to say as there are so many different factors that would need to be taken into consideration such as condition of the trail when you run it and driver skill. If you attempted to do it right after the Jeepers Jamboree, you probably would have a better shot at it being that the trail will have been groomed. In June or July, right after the snow melts enough to run it, probably not especially if you're not familiar with wheeling on big rocks. Either way, I would NOT recommend you running the trail by yourself.

Do you plan to add a rear bumper? seeing the corner body panels on the rear exposed makes me nervous. Also, I would really protect the under carriage with skids plates from guys like Metalcloak or something tougher. Great looking Jeep and my favorite color so far. Keep wheeling!
@wayalife
@wayalife 5 жыл бұрын
LOL!! Maybe I missed something but a big part of making this video was to showcase just how well everything underneath held up. Thank you but I have no interest in buying big bulky aftermarket skids that I have seen to trap heat and make servicing my Jeep difficult. I would like to protect my transmission cooler lines and maybe my oil pan but I'll wait till I can get EVO ProTek skids like I had on my 2012 JK. They offer the protection I wanted but without being overly big, bulky and in the way. As far as rear bumpers go, we've been running our JK's bumperless for years and years and it's yet to be a problem for us. The only thing a rear bumper has ever done for us is add a TON of weight to the rear end. With all the gear we carry, that's the last thing we need.
@ahmadasg7567
@ahmadasg7567 5 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong. I am learning a ton from your videos and others and was just sharing my concerns if it was my truck :) Makes sense though that you don't want trapped heat and added weight. It's definitely a balancing act. I've seen JL owners swear by how reliable metalcloaks skids and their game changer suspension vs rough country or EVO and I am trying to rationalize what package works and curios if you have tips or suggestions from your experience on EVO and maybe others.
