In this video, I show how I replaced the Rear Upper Control Arm and the Lateral Toe Link on my Jeep Patriot. I also show a Bushing Preload Procedure before tightening the bolts and setting the torque to specifications.

People (making the videos on this particular fix) only show the procedure for the passenger side... The driver's side is much more difficult. I need guidance on what to do with the additional obstacles on the driver's side inner upper control arm.

I did not film the driver side but I don't remember having any problem undoing the upper bolt. You could try different tools to reach the bolt.

@@mtlcarguy hey I have a ,2016patriot and suddenly have bad camber wear on the inner rear is that alignment or a part gone bad just coincidently on both sides at similar times
@mtlcarguy
@mtlcarguy 10 ай бұрын
@@tylerbailey470 This kind of problem can be caused by rubber bushing that is not bonded to the steel arm. It can also be a coincidence with both sides since the steel arms rust at the same speed. Weak coil springs can also affect the geometry of the multi-link suspension.

Great video as always! However I can’t for the life of me get the lower bolt from the lateral toe link loose!? I was scared I was going to shear the head off so stopped… any ideas?

When a big bolt is stock in a welded nut like this one, most of the time it is because the threads are corroded or rusted. Penetrating fluid can be added 2 or 3 times to help. This type of bolt is usually made with high strength steel, so I would normally use a cheater bar with a 6 point impact socket to loosen it. If you are not sure about the risk of damaging the bolt, you should try a strong impact tool with a 6 point impact socket. Heating up this welded bolt is hazardous so I would not try it.

Thanks for the video. Is the nut for the toe link to trailing link, the one you said is hard to get at so you used a smaller socket, is that 18" or 19", also whats the brand of socket you used to get at that small space?
@mtlcarguy
@mtlcarguy Жыл бұрын
The outer nut for the toe link was a bit difficult to loosen but the bolt that was difficult to undo was the one holding the inner end of the upper control arm. In the small area, I used a 3/8'' drive small torque wrench (5-80 FT-LBS) with a short 18 MM socket (Milwaukee or Mastercraft)

Great video mtlcarguy, I wish I had it when I replaced my rear suspension parts, I still have very bad wear on the inside rears, do you think I could adjust the rear toe links so to not wear so badly? I use this car only to work and back . I think I didn't install the link adjusters properly .I just replaced the clutch master cylinder, it was Not an easy job, took forever to figure out how to bleed. Thank you

I’m trying to install a rack and pinion seal kit and I can’t get the plastic 4 outer nut from the bottom of the steering rack. Would you by chance know how to disassemble the steering rack to install the new seal kit. Thanks in advance any info will help.

Hi! Is the preload measurement (17.5”) a standard or it would vary from one vehicle to another?
@mtlcarguy
@mtlcarguy 2 ай бұрын
Buongiorno ! There is no real standard. You simply measure it on your vehicle on an even ground, because it varies a little depending on the strength of the coil spring, on the age of the coil spring and on the optional suspension available on different Patriot/Compass.

@@piva84 Years ago, I received a service bulletin from Jeep that extended the warranty up to 10 years to replace the damaged front and/or the rear subframe(s). I had the parts replaced for free 7 years ago. I only payed for the alignment.

@@mtlcarguy I've check that. They told me the warranty was expired 3 years ago on mine. So I had to do it myself. I'm still struggling to get the vehicle aligned. If loosen up all the bolts, let the vehicle sit on the rear suspensions, measure the distance between the center of the wheel and the fender and then lift it up again, preload the struts to the same distance and tighten the bolts...that should work right? I'm not able to tight all the bolts properly when the vehicle is on the ground...thanks!
@mtlcarguy
@mtlcarguy 2 ай бұрын
@@piva84 You can also lower and sit the 2 rear wheels on pieces of wood to have the rear suspension in normal load condition and at the same time have more space to move and tighten the bolts and nuts.

First of all, thanks for the videos. They really help! I have a question: For the toe link, can I replace it without removing the shock and the upper control arm? also, I translated the French message you wrote for someone else. It mentioned that I should loosen the cam bolt while the truck is on the ground, with the wheels facing straight. Should I lift it up and replace it once I loosen the cam bolt? or keep it on the ground?
@mtlcarguy
@mtlcarguy 6 ай бұрын
Ref. question 1: Yes... but the trailing link can be more difficult to fit with the toe link. Ref. question 2: The comment in french was not specifically related to this video. The text was only described for a ''toe in'' or a ''toe out'' homemade basic alignment when the wheels were obviously not aligned. If the rear alignment was fine before you replaced your toe links, the bolts are normally tightened based on the previous cam bolt positions. Most of the people do not perform a homemade alignment, they have the wheel alignment done by a specialist or they simply keep the previous toe settings if they think the rear alignment was fine. Jeep recommends a wheel alignment when the toe links are replaced.
