In this video, I show how to replace a Jeep Wrangler YJ thermostat. This thermostat replacement is the same process on the 4 cyl and 6 cyl Jeep Wrangler.
Here are the parts I used:
Thermostat housing amzn.to/2CjAwZM
Thermostat amzn.to/2BRdvcW
Gasket amzn.to/2DsjoxK
RTV amzn.to/2ARA007
My last video where I break the thermostat bolt off. Funny Stuff!

I'm glad your channel exists. I just got my hands on a 90 YJ and your videos help me be able to do my own servicing and upgrades on it. Thank you. I thought changing my thermostat was going to be a pain, but it was super easy and I knocked it out in an afternoon.

Another good video! and great tips on the process. Good idea to go Grade 8 bolts just to ensure they never snap again. doesn't hurt to use never seize on the bolt shafts where they got stuck last time!

I had to remove the radiator to install an aftermarket a/c system with condenser and fan. I got it all back together, and the temperature went from 210 on the gauge to 265 degrees before suddenly moving back down to 210 and staying there. I read the thermostat sticking was the problem. So I am glad to of found your video and the coolant hasn't even cycled ten miles yet. I figured I would nip this in the bud before it becomes a problem further down the road.

@@JeepSolid I did happen to notice that, for the gray RTV sealant for thermostats, the directions said to wait 24 hours before refilling. I don't know if that black RTV sealant you used required the same 24 hours. Other than that, the gray sealant behaved the same way in terms of holding the thermostat in place while I put the housing on.

Awesome video dude..ha i new there was a reason for that little whole! So you putting lube on the thermostat to make it stay and not leak was why i found your video! Question my replacement thermostat came with a rubber “O” protecting type situation around the rim! Is it for a reason or part of the packing? Thanks ahead of time!

Just did this. How long does it take for your jeep to start sort of regulating its temp again? I started off and it would get really hot. And now it's starting to come back down again. Not sure if it's gonna stay like that though.

Good Evening, I’m in the process of ordering the parts you have listed for my 94 YJ 6cl and all the parts match except for the ACDelco 12TP1E Professional Engine Coolant Thermostat. Do you think that’s an error from Amazon?
@BMWJourney
@BMWJourney 4 жыл бұрын
Yup; as I’m doing my water pump I decide to do my thermostat as well once I was done and what happened the bolt came clean off just like yours, and nowhere could I find the top bolt ended up going with a 1/4th inch shorter bolt which I suppose won’t cause a problem since it’ll be in there either way. Great video thank you!

Measuring mine to the old, unbroken bolt, it was 2 1/2 inches. I could not find the 2 1/4th inch bolt either, so I got both 2 and 2 1/2 inches to measure up.

Right away! This is what I'm talking about! I can already tell this is the solution! I just figured the automotive industry wouldn't be so stupid and when you buy a gasket it is quality and will work the first time as it should!!!!! This isn't helping that people have to make money of knowing cheap tricks (unrelated) At least your video seems to be helping and this would be the resolve I'm sure(a gasket that seems to be the correct width and proper sealant just incase), I might have to order a new thermostat housing to be safe! Not sure yet. Really don't see a need! Just not a fun job to be direct! I appreate the humor within your videos. Lmao? You said felpro? I don't think so! That's the gasket I used and it was shit, the other gasket looks like the 30$ gasket, also not colored the same 35630 was the part for the felpro gasket Grey and red lines around the gasket for the one I ordered and tried! It ripped even with perfect seating, so not likely the r.t.v would have worked with this gasket! This was for a 2000 jeep wrangler 2.5L Altought the gaskets look the same at least for the fitment! Yours looks like 30$ edelbrock gasket

Did your thermostat have the weep hole and would you use one that doesn't have a weep hole. I've seen recommendations on yj forums of drilling a weep hole but there's no way I'm doing that as it would void the warranty. But let me know what you think. Got to do it tomorrow

I was wondering if you ever had an issue with your temperature gauge? I have a 94 YJ. I pulled the gauge cluster out to replace the light bulbs to LED. When I put everything back together my gauge began to give me problems. So I replaced the gauge. Still didn’t give me a good reading. Jeep would sit all night, and still read 210. I finally replaced the engine coolant temp sensor and now the gauge it maxed out to the limit by driving less than 5 minutes. Any suggestions? I’m thinking about wiring in a gauge through the fire wall straight from the temp sensor. I have replaced the thermostat and the sensor that goes to the ECM. I have no check engine light.

Dont have to worry about that for the sensor in the thermostat housing, it is a 2-wire sensor for the ECU. The one for the gauges in the rear of the head could have an issue if doesnt get a proper ground.

Ok. I just used this video to change my thermostat. The old thermostat was stuck open. Temp wouldn't come up past 120. Very cold. Installed the new Tstat. NOW, the temp gauge hangs out around 240-250°F, which scared the hell out of me. So I made certain that it was fully topped off with antifreeze. Gauge still running hot. Couldn't figure it out. So I decided to put my digital temp gauge on the Tstat housing. It says 180-185°. Does this mean the temp sensor is faulty? Or possibly the gauge? The heater gets really hot. In my experience, if the car is overheating, the heater will turn cold, but it's not. It's not bubbling or steaming or running bad. So I think maybe it's not displaying the correct temp.
