I saw him in 1976 right after "Wired" came out. Tommy Bolin opened for him. Saw Jeff again in 2011 with my 20 year old son. We were in the very back row, but still blown away. So glad to have been a witness to such musicianship and expertise. The man was a genius and virtuoso.

One of my two favorite guitarists. The other being Alan Holdsworth. I've been playing for over 50 years. The reason these guys are my favorites is because they are without a doubt the most difficult to emulate. The ease of which Beck manipulates the whammy while adjusting tone and volume knobs while thumb picking crazy solos all at the same time is incredible.

Allan and Jeff were Frank Zappa's two prefered guitarists... I guess the explanation given by Anthony fits perfectly to what Frank thought. Shawn Lane was another incredible player. Each of those guys was "one of a kind" players.

So much more than just using a lot of whammy bar. Jeff created his own technique using the tremolo arm, volume knob, and bending all in fluid combination, swooping up and diving, down, always landing exactly back on the wire. In the documentary, "Still on the Run - The Jeff Beck Story," Jeff's mates Clapton, Page and Gilmour all comment on the difficulty of what he does.

This is a killer performance from all concerned. And not only is Jeff Beck extremely gifted on the whammy bar, but his use of the volume knob, to eliminate the pick sound and then bring the volume up straight afterward, to create the violin effect, is absolutely genius, and very difficult to master.. Yes Tal Wilkenfeld on bass is just outstanding, and an Ozzie girl to boot, go Ozzies.. Good reaction guys..

Thank you so much for this one. This gig at Ronnie Scott's is absolutely legendary. Love the way Jeff Beck gives his guitar a 'voice'. You can hear the anguish of the end of a relationship after Tal's solo, when that solo of Jeff's gives me chills every time. His interplay with Tal is awesome, and Tal is one of the best bassists going around. Not that the sex of the bass player matters, but there is a group of women bassists whose music I always enjoy, Paz Lenchantin, Misa, and Tal to name three.

This song was from Beck's album 'Blow by Blow'; I saw him touring it in '74 or '75 in Toronto and some months later bought a bootleg of that show on the city's main drag. Saw him twice more in the 70s, sadly not since. Rest In Peace, Jeff. Tal is terrific, on her own or with anyone she teams up with, I'm sure I saw a clip with Sean Lennon, John's 2nd son making awesome, interesting guitar noises too; no Jeff, perhaps, but a talented young artist. Thanks a brazillion for this, take care and keep 'em comin', please 🙏🏽 ❤️

Way late on this comment, don't know how I missed this reaction.? I saw Jeff in concert two times, he is one of my top guitarists duh. But Tal is one of my 3 top bassists along with Jack Bruce & Paul Macartney, Tal being that good plus being easy on the eyes tends to make her my favorite. You know you gotta be good for Jeff to give you an extended solo. RIP Jeff he just died yesterday that is what caused me to find this reaction.

Tal Wilkenfeld was 17 at the time of this concert. She had been playing bass for only 2 years at the time (she was already an accomplished guitar player). Before joining up with Jeff Beck she was putting on bass clinics with no less than Stanley Clark. Talk about having great mentors. A total natural.

Using the whammy bar to hit specific notes is crazy hard. It's purely analog, meaning there are no keys or frets, it's like a trombone... you just have to know where the notes are by position, except with a trombone you are sliding several inches, his whammy bar is moving maybe a half an inch total!

The owner of this establishment was a sax player and played on a Beatles tracks years ago, “Lady Madonna”, but I don’t know if it was erased before it was released, or not. “Angel (Footsteps)” from this has some lovely slide playing with impressively high sounds emanating from his guitar. He uses the slide all the way up to the bridge Interesting metal related trivia, the drummer was on the Megadeth album, The System Has Failed. He’s awesome.

Numerous epic guitar pieces by Jeff Beck. I've been playing guitar for 50 years and I can hinestly say without a doubt he is the most difficult to emulate. Try the tune "Hammerhead" or Brush with the blues " from the who else album. "My thing" or "JB blues" from the album titled Jeff. And anything off of Jeff Beck Wired. The fact he is adjusting the volume knob, tone knob, and manipulating the whammy, while plucking with just his right hand is what makes Jeff stand out above all other guitarists.

Some of the best on their instruments. For Jeff Beck, it's not just the whammy, it's also the volume knob. He's constantly twiddling with it (so he's using the whammy, and his pinky is on the volume knob). Tal Wilkenfeld must have been only 22 or so when she did this album and she'd already been around for a bit. And the one and only Vinnie Colaiuta on drums. That whole album is just brilliant.

Tal was ALMOST 21 in this video. She had been playing bass for around four years and music for six. Musical genius at work all over that stage. Vinnie's resumé is a mile long. Jason is a keyboard whiz. Jeff is immortal.

I know the original piece is by Stevie Wonder, but in this version where Jeff plays the the melody line at the beginning it reminds me a lot like the sax melody in Careless Whisper by George Micheal. Obviously Jeff Beck recorded this way before. Also Tal Wilkenfeld is a world class basist and she's quite young in this performance. According to wikipedia she has played with Jeff Beck, Prince, The Allman Brothers Band, Blake Mills, Mick Jagger, Jackson Browne, The Who, Herbie Hancock, Eric Clapton, Chick Corea, Toto, Vinnie Colaiuta, Wayne Krantz and Ryan Adams at least and has a solo career going too. That solo was quite jazzy :)

Tal Wilkenfeld is my top lady bassist, as you see why. Followed by Angeline Saris , Angeline is so incredible. She just finished up a tour with Todd Rundgren and plays in Nardia Michael Walden band, countless other projects and her own music . Then Rhonda Smith who played with Prince & Jeff Beck, so good. There are a lot of other really good players but these 3 lady’s top my personal list. Oh yeah Mr Beck is a damn good guitarist too. Lol. Thanks guys.

1980 Jeff Beck in Dallas was a Top 10 convert for me. The man is a master of control on his instrument. I requested this one (I don’t go by my first name) because of the stellar bass work. I was aghast at her feel on this performance. Technical ability is lost with no passion and she has both. Any other bass fans out there, see Victor’s Jam from Victor Wooten here on youtube.

So, what you can’t see is Jeff doesn’t just use his whammy a lot. He has his guitars made special with the volume control above his whammy, right below the strings. So, he’s whammy’ing AND playing with his volume...while playing. He’s unlike any other player ever. Try come dancing to see a very different side. And maybe big block from the crossroads guitar festival
