When you raise compression you get N0x and less C02, and reverse when you lower compression and there is no way a petrol/gas engine can get close to 22:1 compression ratio... predetonation in the cylinder wont let those engines get past 13:1 ratio. Also Diesel has a max theoretical efficiency of 73% where as petrol is iirc about 45% Also, it's more environmentally friendly to repair an old diesel car than it is to create a new vehicle. The manufacturing of a new vehicle puts so much emissions into the environment. Comparable to 10+ years of running a daily driver, depending on how much you drive and model of car and the new car in comparison to.
