Jerry Mathers is best known for his iconic role as the character Theodore 'The Beaver' Cleaver on the iconic American sitcom Leave it Beaver which ran from 1957 to 1963.
The Cleaver family, which consisted of June and Ward Cleaver, portrayed respectively by Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont as the parental figures, and Tony Dow as Beaver's older brother Wally, became synonymous with the idealized image of the American suburban family in the mid-20th century.
The show was the creation of co-writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher and was unique for being the first primetime sitcom to be written from the point of view of a child. It gave audiences an intimate look into middle-class American boyhood.
Jerry Mathers would eventually have to face the harsh realities that come along with adulthood. In this video, we'll not only cover his life before and after landing the role of the Beaver, but we'll also discuss his 1996 Type 2 diabetes diagnosis and his subsequent prognosis of only having 3 to 5 years to live.

Leave It To Beaver... definitely one of my favorite shows. Remember watching it everyday after school. Glad he changed his lifestyle, diabetes is nothing to play around with...it can wreck your life and possibly take your limbs too! He still looks good, and there's still a hint of that child-like look on his face too. ❤️

I have Type 2 also. When you are first diagnosed, you are told that all kinds of scary things will happen to you. The doctors hope that you will take better care of yourself after hearing the 'scary stories'. I have NEVER heard of the doctors telling a newly diagnosed diabetic that they have only 3 to 5 years left to live. I was diagnosed in 1997 and I was never told that.

Quite a few years ago I seen Jerry Mathers at a HomeTown buffet he was there enjoying dinner by himself I am a tall guy and not shy to eat my fair share above average at a buffet. The day I seen Jerry made me smile every time I looked his way it reminded me of watching him on his childhood show leave It to Beaver it always made me laugh. When he looked my way it still had the same reaction on me he made me laugh just looking at me. I couldn't contain myself I had to stop looking his way because it would just make me bust out laughing when he would give me that funny child look he would do on the leave It to Beaver shows. He loves making that funny childhood face that people laugh at when he was a child . Jerry Mathers what a guy 👍🏡 ⚓

Love ya Beav…..always watched the show back then. I recall the fav joke of the day was from us housewives…when the house was a mess and we were a mess trying to clean up…and if anyone complained, we said hey..I’m not June Cleaver…because she always seemed to be dressed to step out and go out even when house cleaning. But it was meant lovingly too…as if she was our Mother too. Glad your doing good with your health these days,,keep up that good work. (From an old fan who also has health problems to tend to,,daily.).:God bless you …kid. 😁

I am a Type II diabetic, myself. Been on for about 7 years now. Excercise is important to help keeping your numbers low. I have walked up to 6.35 miles, at most times of 5 days a week, to keep those numbers down. But, as a diabetic, I over did it in Aug. While out on a walk, the top of my right foot started to hurt me so bad that I could barely walk...and I had over a mile to get back home. What happened was that my foot experienced a ruptured tendon from all that walking that I love doing. Been in a boot for near a month now, and am about to be free from it. And who says that excercising is good for you?

Even though I enjoyed it, I never really found the show Leave It To Beaver particularly funny. More cute or humorous. If I ever actually laughed it was probably over the Eddy Haskell character. As far as being given only a few years to live, I am thinking that probably applies to anyone with Diabetes if they don't adjust their diet and lifestyle to the disease. Its good that Mr. Mathers came out as a spokesman for it though, because sometimes someone famous carries a lot of weight with people.

I loved the show very when I was kid watching it. The trouble about was they made him into a naive kid who didn't know anything except how get into trouble , is why they called the show leave it to beaver. 😉. Most people tried to copy cat their kids in that way at that time. They didn't understand it wasn't real. That was 60 years ago and now some parents seem as they don't care about their kids in that sense. Since they past the law that you have send your kids to around 1942 because of money , they didn't think about the dire consequences it would bring over the years. I am glad though they had second part where they could in 1982 where could show that we still are forgetful at times about things where a lot going on at one time.😊
