Join FactsVerse as we take a closer look at the life and career of Tony Dow and the pain, depression, and anger that he suffered after Leave It To Beaver wrapped up after its 234 episode run. We'll also be that's taking a look at where Dow came from and how he managed to score his breakout role in the first place.
Tony Dow is an American actor, producer, sculptor, and director who is best known for his role as Wally Cleaver on the iconic sitcom Leave it to Beaver. It was a role that he held from 1957 to 1963. While that role certainly made him into a star, it would also leave him typecast - thus impeding upon his ability to find meaningful roles later on in his career.
After Leave it to Beaver ended, Dow found himself deeply angry and wildly depressed. He wrestled with those feelings for many years but ultimately they shaped his entire life story. Throughout his journey through the pits of despair, one person, in particular, served as his guiding light. Lauren Shulkind, Dow's wife has been by Dow's side since 1980, and she has done her best to be a pillar of support for him even in his darkest moments.
Although he has now gotten his emotions under control, in recent years he has opened up about his story so that he can help guide others encourage them to reach out and get help when they really need it. Leave it to Beaver might have put him on the map, but Tony Dow's biggest accomplishment in life just might have been dealing with his own personal struggles.

Likewise. I own the entire series and rewatch episodes every week. My favorites are when Miss Landers comes to dinner and the one where the boys have to take care of the little girl who keeps wanting to see “Mary Jane” not realizing that’s code for “bathroom.”

I think the Beaver, especially when he young, was my favorite, but I love how Wally was such a protector of the Beaver. I also love that Wally would listen and give brotherly advice. I think it was wonderful how the parents were able and willing to listen to the boy's concern.

In my opinion, Tony had the coolest role in the series. He was funny, sincere and honestly inspiring. I wasn't born until 1970 and this show was still airing pretty well through the 70's and early 80's, so I got to enjoy this series when I was a kid. Today this show is off the radar for todays kids and teenagers. It's to bad that today's entertainment has become so polluted with so many different negatives where in those days you didn't have to worry about what your children were watching on TV. How the American culture has changed so much over the years.

I’m a HUGE LITB and Tony Dow fan. I also did the child star circuit in LA in that period and I’m now very grateful that I never went beyond walk-on parts. Tony Dow had a naturalistic style that was so genuine, I think we all really feel like we knew Wally and his family and friends. I think he and Hugh Beaumont were the real soul of the show, speaking reason to Beaver (and their parents) and their friends. It’s going to be a sad day when Tony Dow passes.

Oh how I LOVED Wally Cleaver!! The fact that Tony Dow is much like him makes me feel “swoony” like I did 45 years ago. The show, well, taught us a lot about being a good kid, doing the right things, and accepting the consequences if we didn’t. I often had some exact situations they innocently fell into on the show and had to get out of by telling the truth to grown ups. When the boys were shown love, acceptance, and forgiveness in spite of their behavior , it gave me hope and let me believe I wasn’t such a bad person for messing up. These are the very reasons the show was and is beloved by so many for so long. We were raised to be good, American kids ready to deal with life. I had 3 step children beginning at my age age of 47. I was sure I could help them grow. Twenty-two years later, I have 2 of them married and successful and one living his independent life loved by everyone he meets. I credit the “village” of people who raise me and tried to mirror them with my kids. Some of these village mentors were the creators of “Leave It To Beaver.” God bless you, Tony for giving us your character and now living a good life, yourself. When you’re feeling down, know that my brother and I, and now my stepkids, learned so much from you and your gentle soul.

@@harperstacey9604 I went to one of those nostalgia autograph shows and met and talked to Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell) and Frank Bank (Lumpy Rutherford). They were great- so friendly & down to earth. It was towards the end of the day and we just visited for quite awhile. I had my picture taken with them and also got an 8x10 glossy photo of Ken Osmond, autographed for me and those two wouldn’t take any $ from me. Usually I believe there was a $15- 20 dollar charge but I’m not sure. Plus this was at least 15 or so yrs ago. I saw Jerry Mathers but didn’t get a chance to talk to him. .

It sunk at Prospect Point in 1888. They have Beaver Musuems opening soon in Naniamo and Victoria. They are.looking for a name for a Rum drink & may be OLD DAD'S RUM or? Met Tony years ago when I was a young US Marine Corporal stationed at Camp Hansen, Okinawa. Some of the cast members of “Happy Days” were there to play our Camp Guard unit in a game of softball. (Tony Dow, Cathy Silver, Marion Ross, Henry Winkler, Clint Howard, Erin Moran and others were there.

I loved watching Tony Dow as Wallace (Wally) Cleaver on "Leave It To Beaver." I used to watch reruns of that show on MeTV. I have the first two seasons on dvds. He was so handsome. He's still good looking. Of course, he was an excellent actor. I'm glad that he's still alive. Thank you Facts Verse for showing this video about Tony Dow.

About half way through the series the show could have been renamed Leave it to Wally. IMHO seasons 4 through 6 were centered around Wally and his friends more so the Beaver in seasons 1 through 3. To this day I still enjoy LITB more than most newer shows. Thanks for many years of good wholesome entertainment .

I was the unofficial president of my local chapter of the "Eddie Haskell Fan Club." I was doing an eight-week training stint at Fort Benjamin Harrison (just outside of Indianapolis and, apparently now closed) in the summer of 1967. The Post Newspaper had a "Front Page" story of how Tony Dow was doing his two-week Reserve Duty there at the same time. I don't know why I still remember that. At the time it was a truly Ho-Hum item.

There are so many touching and funny episodes but my favorite was when lumpy played a trick on wally's car making the engine compartment explode from fireworks then wally and Eddy hooked a chain to lumpys car and when lumpy drove off it ripped the whole rear end out of lumpy's car. I thought that was hilarious. There's no two actors that could of played the parts better then Jerry Matthers and Tony Dow. Ive always wanted to meet the actors just tell them how much they impacted my childhood. Thank you for the laughs and the heart warming messages from the show. I hope you feel better Mr. Dow.

My ex-wife met Tony Dow on the slopes at Mammoth Mountain in the 1980s. She was high school age at the time and struck up a casual conversation with Tony in line for the lift. She said he was just this kindly handsome "dad-type" gentleman with a very familiar voice. She didn't put it together who she had been talking with until her older sister recognized him. My ex was like, "Are you kidding? I was talking with him for like 15 minutes trying to figure out why he sounded so familiar!!"

Great post, great memories. Loved Beaver then, and still try to catch it on KZfaq. I grew up with these shows, along with Lucy and Dennis the Menace, Patty Duke, Father knows Best, Mayberry and really stretching it--‼️-My Little Margie.,😂---innocent, all. Kind with hidden morals, all. I think my generation lucked out. Sure! Most real life wasn’t as easy, but these shows let us grow up on our own timeline--not too fast. ❤️

Saw all the shows many times over my whole life. Tony never went to a real school starting with Jr High unlike sport's jock Wally. He did play baseball during breaks on the set and hit a high pop up that broke the windshield of Steve McQueen's car. Tony drove himself to the set in a Corvair Monza that a year ago had been found and refurbished to it's original state and presented to him as a surprise. I saw him on movie where he was on a beach with others and even though it was a movie...he was still Wally Cleaver to anyone that saw it. He got typecast along with Lumpy and Eddie and other characters from that show. Beaver was on My Three Sons with a mustache and still looked like the Beaver and acted like him. The Leave it to Beaver Show would skyrocket in views if they were smart and colorized it.
