In this tutorial I'll talk about what colors of polymer clay I recommend starting with (Premo and Kato Brand) so that you can mix up your own colors as sometimes you can't afford to buy all the colors you want.

Wow. Samantha, as an artist, I sincerely appreciate you showing this. Not everyone knows the differences between warm and cool hues within the same color. You did great illustrating this for us.

The whole cool/warm color thing with Premo! explains a lot of my frustration with that brand. I understand the why, I just didn't know that it applied to Premo! Very informative. Thank you for sharing.

Wow, I'm so glad I watched this video. I have watched many videos about working with clay, beforehand, but this one was probably the most important one of all!! I had no idea that there was a warm and cool with premo.... I just ordered the primary colors, the black, white and translucent, ONLY, I don't know the type of blue I ordered.....the yellow and red are warm, but I don't know about the blue....oh my! Oops!!! Lol....but hey, I'm glad I know now before I started mixing color's!😊 I'm a 'newbie' and wanted to know and learn all I could before investing in this new craft. Thank you for this very helpful and informative video 😊

Kato also has a true primary colour selection, which are extremely intense pigments. You can download a polymer clay, colour mixing chart from the Internet. If unsure, try mixing a very small amount of your colour choices to see if you get your desired colour blend, or end up with mud. There is no wasted clay in polymer clay work, you can find a use for even mud. The information on warm and cool spectrum in Premo is worth noting. If you are finding your brand of polymer clay is very soft to use, particularly in warm weather, then try using Kato which can be difficult to condition in the cooler months.

Hey Samantha, be careful with the reds. Actually magenta is the primary colour to mix with. Red already is a mix of magenta with yellow. Therefore you won't be able to mix violet or purple out of your colours. I ran into that problem already... I hope this helps with your next video, I am already looking forward to it. Yes with Premo the primaries are CMYK (cobalt blue/cyan, fuschia/magenta, and zinc yellow/yellow) rather than RGB.

Thank you Samantha for explaining the warm and cool color sides of Premo. It there a chart showing all the colors by warm and cool? I have mixed a lot of mud. It would be helpful to separate them, so no more mishaps.

I mixed ultramarine blue and cadmium red to make purple and I got mud. Not sure if ultramarine is really warm toned. Or maybe the red has too much of a yellow undertone. Not sure what to do. I wanted to start working with clay with only the primary colors but after some research it seems this is a known issue with premo.

It's not necessary to make most projects, however it is a great clay to have on hand as it can do stuff that the other colors can't
