Polymer Clay Project: Lily Pond Necklace Tutorial

In this tutorial we will be making a Lily Pond polymer clay bead necklace using the torn paper or watercolor technique and Gelatos. I'll show you how to create different effects depending on which background clay you use.
We will also be rolling some beautiful lentil beads from our watercolor veneers and molding them into various cabochon shapes.
I've also included a fairly detailed description of the drilling process in this video, so if that is something you struggle with, make sure you watch right to the end.

Oh wow this is a wonderful wonderful tutorial! I don’t do much with water colours anymore and have never tried it on polymer clay! I am going to now! I was so excited when you were using Gelatos! What a gorgeous technique, Samantha! I loved seeing how you reshaped the lentils, and the trick of using gloves when rolling the beads and reshaping the lentils into cabochons is one I plan to use often. I think these beads could also look great with a small (2-4 mm) pink or green round tourmaline bead between each of the polymer and silver spacer beads and without the diamond shaped cabochons (which would make cool earrings). Thanks for another terrific tutorial! ❤️

One of your best! Cool, subtle & sophisticated veneers ... I'd never have guessed the colouring/tearing technique, it's like alchemy! I will try to resist (for the moment, anyway!) investing in the Gelatos and try your alternative of smearing with fragments of other colours of clay as one of my passions is mixing the colours. Hi Samantha!! I really enjoy your calm style and detailed tutorials, although some of them are very prolonged, I feel short the time because you only dedicate the time to teaching, many long videos of other polymer clay channels of KZfaq have too much useless talk, your videos are all teaching, you are a great master !! Hi Sam! You hit the jackpot once again! Gorgeous beads! I wanted to share a great tip with you that Pat Robertson shared with us. After the beads have been varnished with Varathane and are thoroughly dry, bake again at 225 F for 20-30 minutes and it will make the varnish extra hard. Thanx again! You are great! 😉👍😍

Lovely necklace. I have watched your tutorials for some time now - love the faux stone ones best. You are showing a picture of one which looks like Rochrodosite at time point 50.16 in this video. Would there be a tutorial about how to achieve this effect?

If you want to sand your pieces then you need the translucent on top.

Helen, the acrylic squares are used for clear stamps, so look in the rybber stamp section of your local craft store. Samantha, hope you don't mind my commenting on this!

An off the wall question, what size are the drill holes? How do you choose? I love your work and am so eager to try these and so many others. Some say how many ounces are used to make the first white piece, I never know how much is used. Sorry, eager beginner. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, and helping so many to just have fun playing with clay.

I generally make the holes just a bit bigger than my cord size. In this case I think it was around 0.5mm.

Hi Samantha. Do you have a specific reason why you don't put holes in your beads before you bake them? And, when you said to bake your round beads on tissues, do you mean regular tissues, or tissue paper like you use when wrapping gifts?

I find that the beads distort if I try to put a hole through them before baking. I use regular tissues. The sort you blow your nose with. :D

Is there a specific reason you drill the holes after baking rather than punching them prior to baking? Or is it just a personal choice?

I drill holes after baking because it won't distort the beads, where as punching a hole before baking would squish the bead.

Do you have a tutorial on how you actually prepare the pieces for baking? Like the tenting, etc.? Why do drill your holes after baking rather than before they are baked? I’ve watched several of your tutorials, I subscribe, and I’m also part of the Facebook group. I’m not new to polymer clay. I’ve used it before, but I am a newbie in taking it to a higher level so I can sell them. Thank you.

I don't have a tutorial yet for baking. I do have an article. I'll leave a link below. I am working on a series of beginner videos so that should be out soonish. I drill holes after baking because it's neater and doesn't distort the beads. No. I don't think you can. You can use acrylic paint, alcohol ink, mica powder, gilders paste and pastels.

@@debbiegaines1362 Just to add, gelatos behave a bit like oil pastels, or soft crayons, but they're acrylic-based. They mix beautifully with water for a soft watercolor effect, too.

I really like that torn paper technique! I love how it came out and the 3-d effect they have. I make polymer clay pens and I think that technique would look so cool on a pen. Thank you for showing how it's done! I can't wait to try it.
