what's bananas is that the characters on the show always ate "normally", and ate pizza and muffins in the coffee shop etc. all the time. Which makes us feel ever worse because it's like they're staying that skinny AND eating a bunch, when really they were practically starving themselves. stupid Hollywood.

I don't know why, but "stupid Hollywood" made me laugh. The people behind this really are asses, whether they realize it or not. They hide behind the argument that movies/TV series are fantasies, but acted like Friends was down-to-earth when it wasn't. (Find me an NYC apartment like Monica's while being a student)

The thing that gets me is that the Friends women were all portrayed on the show as people who ate normally and enjoyed life to the full. They gave the impression that everyone could have their slender bodies without any form of restriction. No wonder female fans of the show wondered why that lifestyle didn’t work for them.

As a historian I would find it incredibly interesting for you to go back to diets from the 1890s to 1950s or so to see how inadequate they were and how they shaped our current diet culture. Ones like the Salisbury diet or Fletcherism would be really interesting as well as looking at diets starting in the 1920s that looked more on weight loss than digestion and how the invention of calories as a unit of measure impacted our eating habits! There’s a really interesting focus on digestion in Victorian and Edwardian weight loss diets that in many ways I think is replicated today and so would be fascinating to look at!

The Atkins diet put me in a hospital when I was 16 thanks to my mum forcing me to diet since I was 12, including taking me to a 'dietitian' who straight up told me I will never be happy without a flat tummy and that I've eaten enough food for the rest of my life and don't deserve it anymore. I'm 28 and still fighting the trauma. Wtf were people thinking in the 90s and 00s.

My mom was all about Atkins too. She still is. The difference in my experience, though, is that she would practically force junk food on me. She never encouraged me to exercise, but she went for walks every day. She would get all the unhealthy snacks for me and tell me I was healthy as long as I had a couple carrots or celery or a banana. She would happily suggest getting me taco bell (like 1-2 items) to eat as a snack. So excessive sodium and calories for a snack on top of three full meals and other snacks. She’d make salads for herself, but Mac and cheese for me. The only comment she ever made about me needed to lose weight was “if you just lost like 5 pounds, you’d look 🤌” and that was it. She didn’t tell me how to be healthier. I remember she took me to in n out right after that and got me a burger, cheese fries, and a milkshake. She ate a lettuce wrapped burger. When I was able to start buying my own food and go for walks on my own, I lost a lot of weight. She HATED it. Family members would compliment me on the weight loss and she would roll her eyes. If she couldn’t find a way to take credit for it, she got mad that I was getting positive attention for my appearance. If she noticed I bought a lot of fruits and veggies, she’d buy junk food and tell me I had to eat it before it went bad. She’d only eat it if she was drunk. She’d offer to go out to eat at places that didn’t have many nutritious options. She was nicer to me before I lost the weight. When I was thinner, she acted like she was jealous and I was competition for her and she was so much meaner to me. I gained weight back and she suddenly was a little nicer to me. She still buys junk food and gets mad if I don’t eat it, but I’m standing my ground. I’ll eat a cookie if I want to, but not because you’re forcing me to Sorry for the novel lol. Guess I needed to rant

Side rant: as much as friends was so cute and nostalgic, there are so many problematic themes here. With the diets that were extraordinarily restrictive and unhealthy and massive amounts of exercise, I’m sure that it caused fertility issues with Jen and Courtney. They were basically starved for years while simultaneously being hailed as body goals. In addition to the “fat girl turned skinny and now hot” trope and crippling OCD of Monica that was played off as quirky, Ross’s deep-rooted insecurity and jealousy problems that were viewed as funny, cheating issues, unexpected pregnancies that were romanticized, and the fact that Matthew Perry was completely addicted to drugs during season 3 and no one helped him at all. It’s not the “goals” that everyone thinks it was.

No, but in those days we actually used jokes about serious issues as a kind of therapy. The fat to slim story was completely exaggerated exactly because of that. We understood that it was twisted and it was obviosly never meant to teach viewers that this is how it should be. We took a step back and laughed at the absurd parts of what usually was too painful to touch. I see this in Bosnian humour (I live in former Yugoslavia) a lot, joking about all the actual misery people need to deal with after the war, including corruption and poverty.

@@goranbreskic4304 its not a matter of "in those days", it happened before then, still does now, and will continue, but just because something is common doesn't make it right. sure bringing light to heavy topics is a helpful coping mechanism in real life, but literally broadcasting to the world in a comedy genre show, random insensitive joke after the next, detached from reality, with no respect or spreading awareness on ways to deal/help with the issue, is a different story. Its like how when joking around with your close loved ones you can say something pretty messed up, but if youre in a room full of strangers u should be more mindul bc u never know what stage theyre in, tv is that x100. They just carelessly took real peoples pain and profited off it.

I don't understand the 1200 calories. That's the highly restrictive caloric intake that already slender Mila Kunis used to lose 20 lbs for her role in Black Swan. It's a fairly extreme diet used to lose weight and not meant to be maintained long term. Like that's well below maintenance, even for a very thin person, especially when you're young, active, work full-time, and exercise regularly. 😑

I do that for the sake of simplicity. I just choose not to make food an issue anymore. I feel the more emphasis I place on creating the perfectly balanced meal the more imbalanced I become with eating overall. I absolutely LOVE this video! As a 90s kid, Friends definitely was peak terrible diet culture, and I’ve spent two decades trying to undo the toxic thoughts. We used to watch it as a family, and I loved it but now watching it, I get more annoyed at how everything in it is unrealistic, from their giant apartments to insanely thin bodies. Thank you so much for this Abbey!! P.S. I also chuckled when you gave a shout-out to the Avengers at the beginning and then proceeded to show an image from DC’s Superman. Not going to tell my husband bc he’d probably short circuit lol!

And also, part of the issue here is that uteruses result in a bit of a pooch. No wonder your stomach has to be totally empty to look totally flat. I mean, if you're a cis woman you could have ab muscles that are at least somewhat visible if not a six-pack outright, and still your stomach would pooch out a little due to said uterus. And people don't teach girls in general that. Or trans guys, for that matter.

Seriously! I’m a fairly thin woman and my stomach only looks flat in the morning. Once I’ve eaten and had coffee forget it (and I don’t mean that.I look flat or even bloated- well okay some days it’s bloat). Edit- I can still see some slight ab definition but my stomach won’t be flat.

I’m sitting here nodding along to everything you’re saying Abby. I’m so glad you made this video! Also, another thing that really annoyed me was the body double standard in Friends. The guy friends ate freely on the show without judgment in the script (aka Joey) and they were not expected to loose weight or look an ideal way like the women were. The show is fun and nostalgic but has too many problematic themes :/

recently I started re-watching FRIENDS and Jessica's video was recommended at some point on my youtube homepage. It blew my mind how little food they used to eat, but even though we can all realize that, it was still so triggering. The whole "carbs is your enemy" diet that was so popular in the 90s, we know it's bs, but still I was so tempted to go down that road..so thank you to Abbey and Jessica for stressing sooo many times how problematic these diets are and how much important food is for our bodies :)

Ah this brings back all of the diet culture-y things my mom instilled into my head in the 90s. I’m in my 30s now and just now beginning to heal my relationship with food, thanks in large part to you, Abbey! Those calorie totals were so small, it made me hungry just thinking about it. I work out 5 days a week most weeks and I think I probably eat a little over 2000 calories a day most days, and I’m only 5’2”, 135-140ish lbs. I’m just flabbergasted at how people even survive at all off of a heavily restricted diet for so long. It’s honestly mind boggling. I keep thinking of how, when I was under eating and over exercising, I was constantly cold and my body just hurt. I feel for people who go through that cycle for years and feel like those metabolism red flags are just “normal” for them.

I am an actress and I was around then and we were all supposed to look as skinny as the Friends girls any way possible and if we weren’t it was seen as not being dedicated/trying hard enough. There was no way they were eating anywhere near this or exercising this much. There was a real fear of looking muscular. There was a lot of subsisting on coffee then.

I want add something about this since I have first hand knowledge about influencers and celebrities. I have been on this set several times and I am familiar with the catering and the crew…First of all they did not have the same lunch every day of their life together… show taped one night a week there was one day of rehearsal which they would have lunch …,a day of camera blocking ,which they may or may have not been there for lunch …on the run through during which they may or not have been there for lunch.. Also I believe the show tape for 25 weeks or so per year some people say things like they ate the same thing for lunch every day for seven years obviously you can say that’s not true. Now this Jen salad thing came from a salad talked about on a recipe in an interview that it was her favorite salad. She most definitely did not eat this “Jen salad “craft services made her a plate with lettuce sliced turkey carrots sticks there may or may not of been some avocado and celery that she took back to her trailer every day that she was there for lunch. the story of the girls sitting around together eating their salads that she brought from home is complete and utter nonsense… But it’s all over the Internet “Jen salad”.. the salad that she ate every day I can unequivocally state that this is not true. She ate less. I am told she does better now

I got so hungry just watching this I needed to grab a snack. This diet would make me absolutely miserable in every way. The salad does look good but I would probably need to add chicken or hard boiled egg, avocado and salad dressing. I am 35 years old so I do find it sad that I was coming of age during this era. It's taken me a lot of therapy, self compassion, and a change of mindset to get where I am today and no longer have disordered eating habits. I hate how through the decades body types have become a "trend" - 90's super thin to now tiny waste with some curves. Bodies are bodies - not a trend you can control and change up!!!!

The Jen salad does sound good, one of my favorite things is something really similar but I like to use couscous instead of bulgur and some olive tapenade from Trader Joe’s for the dressing! And a side of some berries or if I’m really hungry hummus and pita! And sometimes paired with red wine. Yum!! Edited to say I don’t think I would want it for lunch and dinner EVERY DAY though! The 90’s skinny pressure was so intense. Being 36 I definitely felt that growing up.

A couple of things: Atkins became popular (again) in the *late* 90s, not when "Friends" first came on the air. This video focuses on "Friends," but during the mid-90s or so, there were articles noting that in every hit sitcom, the actresses became thinner, sometimes scarily so, while the men overwhelmingly did not. The real puzzler was why this happened *after* the show became a hit, since obviously, people liked the character and "look" of the actress. "The "Heroin Chic" look *was* much decried at the time, but Fashion ignored it. However, it wasn't really seen in its entirety (which included lank hair, undereye circles, etc.) outside of fashion shoots. The "Lollipop Head" look -- stick body, big head on top of it -- was also criticized outside of the entertainment industry but it continued throughout the 90s.

As a kid I had a period where I would do too many sports (I loved them all and my friends in the different groups, so my parents allowed me to continue). I scraped my knee one day and it wouldn’t heal, so I had to go to the doctor. They said that because I was underweight my body couldn’t take care of my wound and it had developed into an infection. Many people view weight as a look, but do not consider all the medical stuff that really goes into the body functioning. I personally refuse to cut out carbs because I do not wish to do things that could make my brain/body struggle down the road. The body is so complex and we are hopefully going to live with it for a long time, we truly need to be kind to it and help it out so it can do what it needs to do for us💕 The tragic thing with the behind the scenes with Friends is that all 3 women had in their contracts that they weren’t allowed to gain weight, and the guys did not have anything in their contracts that banned weight gain.

When I struggled the worst with my ED, I did 1-2hours of hardcore cardio a day and only ate about 1000 calories, after about a week I already had blackouts, my hair fell out, I was too tired to move aside from the gym etc etc... how can those actresses be in an environment with so many people and even those signs we're not enough for someone to speak up??

(TW) I agree with the poster before me. They didn’t care. It was how you were supposed to look. If you didn’t look like the Friends cast, Calista Flockhardt and Gwyneth Paltrow you weren’t trying hard enough. I also do not believe they were exercising this much. It was probably PR to make them seem more healthy. I started acting then and watching this today has made a lot of the old “rules” come flooding back. You had to have a flat stomach, no breasts, and honestly no muscles. That was the look. And (MAJOR TW) I can’t speak for the Friends set, but on other sets and theater productions fainting was pretty normal. Not that everyone fainted every day, but people minimized it when it happened because it really was expected of all women to do whatever it took to look that way to get and keep jobs. Telling actresses to eat more was telling them to give up their hard earned and lucrative jobs and to give up their dreams. Things are a lot better today. Things are far from perfect now, but back then no matter what your build, looking like a waif was expected and they didn’t care how you did it. IME

My brain can’t fathom how someone can eat the same meal every day for 10 years! I mean, I can’t even eat the same meal for 2 days in a row, I have to change it up, even if it’s just switching out the protein or carbs.

I'd like to point out that for some neurodiverse people, planning meals and eating a variety of foods can be overwhelming. Having the same meals every day can be a way for them to have a routine, so I generally give people the benefit of the doubt just in case; otherwise yeah, we all need a bit of variety in our diets. I know right now I need me some veggie spring rolls every week or I'll scream 😂

I just watched the show Everwood from 2002-2006 and was shocked at how progressively thin the women on that show got. It was scary. Same with Ally McBeal 1997-2002 it was like they were trying to have 10-year-old boy bodies! It was a dark time for women in Hollywood and it affected/infected us all. Glad those days are gone.

I would be really interested to see you review some of the communities on Reddit such as r/1200isplenty, r/1500isplenty, r/omad etc, I follow them more for meal inspiration and just out of curiosity but I've heard people in other subreddits critique them as being covers for ED.

I can remember of the Ally McBeal era, Courtney Thorn-Smith saying something like “I got tired of eating a salad with no dressing and then running 5 miles.” I love fasted cardio but I can’t imagine doing a Jennifer Aniston workout and then not having some carbs with breakfast! 😟

I eat the same breakfast every day and change up lunch, dinner, and snacks weekly. I do that to cut down on decision fatigue. It works wonders for my schedule. Although I eat the same breakfast every day, which is black coffee, and yogurt with nuts, I change up the yogurt and nuts for more variety.
