@someonesour
@someonesour 2 жыл бұрын
@@Reutviv even then,those that are in need plastic straws are most likely to WASH them and make them last. Bamboo are extremely hard to clean and if you have any physical disabilities in combination to those that stop you from using paper,glass is a breakable material and may cause injury,silicone allergies etc. If you can use other straws that’s good but,there’s a lot of reasons why other types of straws may not be suitable for some people,and there’s ways to REUSE plastic as to not be wasteful.

i’m convinced that people who recommend using paper straws have never actually used a paper straw
@misseselise3864
@misseselise3864 2 жыл бұрын
i also want to add that there’s no evidence to support the claim that paper straws contain gluten or gluten byproducts (per the national celiac association). the material used to make wheat-based straws is the byproduct left over after the grain is harvested which do not contain gluten. plus the straws don’t “break down” during use so there’s no risk of ingesting any of the product

It's plastics in general. And steel/glass straws have bend designs that are permanent reusable and EXACTLY what Jess needs. They can be washed forever taken outside and the bend doesn't move/revert. Single use plastics in all forms are absolutely harmful. We should all send Jess some rainbow steel/glass bend straws and see how she likes them. Thin ones, please!
@thespankmyfrank
@thespankmyfrank 4 жыл бұрын
@@sersastark No, they're not what she needs. She's been over this before (just watch her video on plastic straws). The straw needs to be bendable, and glass/steel are not. (Plus they are still not okay for people who might suddenly bite down due to for example a seizure, imagine your teeth vs steel, yaaay.) Jess also has silicone straws but even though they are bendable they don't stay that way. which she needs them to. On another note, how about focusing on the corporations dumping plastic and other trash in nature, instead of individuals just trying to live?
@Yandolito

@@sersastark as far as I know she has one (she tested different types of reusable straws in a video but I'm not sure it's still up). She kept two kinds. The one you're talking about I think she uses for travel, as well as silicone straws. But none of them are well enough suited to her needs. Please read up on who plastic straws were invented for and you'll quickly find that most of the reusable solutions aren't good enough for the majority of people who need them. The "can you hear your own thoughts?" thing... The "internal monologue" has been discussed a lot recently in my social media circles. It seems that some people can 'hear' words in their mind, others don't, they have to speak aloud to hear how something sounds. This is similar to the "mind's eye" where some people can actually visualise things. I cannot, I just kinda know how things would look but I can't "see" it in my mind.
@idunno966

Stop. I don’t know, I think I can “ hear my thoughts” but I don’t know if I’m imagining that as well. Like if I sing, I know I’m doing it, but is it sound? Or am I imagining it? Wtf. STAP. I am also like the person commenting before, I am literally talking to myself whole day. I’m different languages, sometimes I don’t even know what language I was using to think. Omg this makes my head ache.
@darkacadpresenceinblood
@darkacadpresenceinblood 4 жыл бұрын
Actually I think when peopl are talking about their "inner voice" that's never your original thought. That's just you subconsciously making the thought into a sentence, which everyone does to some level, but also everyone has thoughts that don't become sentences. I also talk to myself in my head, a LOT, but that's not all of the thoughts just some that become sentences. ... Did this whole thing make sense or am I horrible at explaining?
@nerdywolverine8640
@nerdywolverine8640 4 жыл бұрын
@@darkacadpresenceinblood that makes sense, for some that translation is automatic and part of expressing yourself to yourself, like for me, since I'm a very precise and word-oriented person. Also because of the way my brain stores things the word is so heavily tied to the concept cluster that they're essentially one and the same and it's easier to call up the umbrella term rather than the full collection of memories, concepts, and ideas linked to it, so while it might not technically be the original "root" thought it might as well be. Then other people just never bother to translate their thoughts because why would they, it's extra work (for them). I imagine people like my sister are just better at holding a bunch of info into one unified concept or feeling or image than I am. What you're explaining sounds like a middle ground between the two "extremes" or modes of internal expression--most people I know lie heavily on one end or the other.

First of all, please allow me to say how sorry I am about your husband. I know how difficult it is to watch someone you love deteriorate. And please allow me to say that caregiver/compassion fatigue is a real concept! So to hell with those who fail to see how difficult this is for you on the daily basis. I honestly think that Jessica having a 'carer' is what helps eliminate compassion fatigue in their marriage. I hope where you live can help fund homecare or that you can afford the services yourself, because it really makes a difference! Even if it's just 3 days a week or an hour everyday. Of course we care for the ones we love and it's truly a privilege to be there for them when they need us most, but it's okay to ask for help along the way. All the best to you and your hubby, you lovely lady.

This is a good one. I'm in my mid 20s and my parents help care for me but it's caused huge strains in our family. My grandparents think I'm just being lazy (because someone in their mid 20s is totally gonna fake having less independence). My parents understand how bad things are because they see it constantly, but it's mentally and physically exhausting for them and it makes me feel guilty that we can't afford a carer. But if I try to do more than in already doing on my own, it puts me at risk of falls/other injuries. Don't ever feel ashamed about needing to hire a carer to help you. It is hard enough to take care of yourself mentally and physically when a loved one is going through a health crisis. It's damn near impossible to take care of them, too.

Some people “hear” their thoughts in their head like an ongoing narrative, others process thoughts without that sort of inner narrator. I think the question about "can you hear your own thoughts" assumes you've been deaf from birth, and don't have a practical concept or any experience hearing. A bit like a question for people who have been blind since birth may or may not be able to imagine what the color green looks like. When you have thoughts, do you "hear" them or "see" them or some other model of communicating with yourself in your head. That's what I think that question is asking.
@jasper5222

That's how I read it as well. A bit like when people ask "when you dream, can you hear?" I have a hearing impairment and if I'm actively thinking about something (e.g. saying internally to myself "I need to go shopping"), I can hear because I know what my own voice sounds like as it wasn't a from-birth thing and I'm not "profoundly deaf", but if my mind just wanders, I tend not to, especially if I'm daydreaming or if my thought/dream is not me (e.g. a person I've only recently met)

I can actually offer some insight into hearing your thoughts. The first bit is few people actually can hear their thoughts, which means most people don't have a voice in their head rambling over the information being given to them. Secondly, being able to hear your thoughts is a common sign of Neurodivergence. Which to give a brief explanation as to what that means, it refers to people who's brains are structured differently. This is commonly associated with autism but can apply to other mental conditions as well. So in short if you can hear your thoughts you are likely Neurodivergent.

I think many people completely agree that disposable straws should be widely available to those who need them. They just don't want straws to be virtually thrown at anyone. To answer the question about hearing the voice in your head, Hank Green just recently made a video about this. There is a large part of the population whom think in linear sentences, speaking to them selves almost conversationally, leading from point to point linearly. Others may think in a cluster of concepts, and these clusters can branch and connect to other clusters of conceptual ideas. There may not necessarily be words attached to it until you begin to try to communicate what your thinking. Personally, I think with a combination of these. Just day to day, and particularly when I'm watching a lot of KZfaq, I speak to myself the way someone may address an audience. Leading from one thing to the next with sentences. This makes me an excellent communicator day to day, able to get messages across very concisely or easily figure out another way to say what I mean if someone doesn't understand. However, when I'm thinking hard about something, being creative or being emotional, I realized recently that I start to think more in those abstract clouds of concepts and emotions. This leads to why it is really hard to communicate my emotions, or write creatively, and particularly why I have a hard time managing my "negative self-talk" because when I'm being negative or hard on myself is when I'm not actually thinking with talk or words.

A series of the how to dress vintage would be appreciated because I prefer your vintage style since it looks like it's a bunch of different eras mixed with modern style rather than just one specific era. Not going to lie I just also like the poofy skirts 😔😂🥰

I personally hear thoughts in my head. It’s kinda like I’m having a conversation with myself. The way I think is pretty strange, probably because of my adhd, and I always assumed that everyone thought the way that I did. I think (mostly) in the second person, it’s like there are three of me in my head contemplating every decision I make. It’s practically impossible to describe with words of this planet, but yeah, I think with a voice in my head. I also get visuals of prominent thoughts, but not all thoughts cause I’m constantly thinking of multiple things at once, and the only time my mind really isn’t at full speed is if I’m playing my viola. Brains are weird.

Nora Wall Sometimes my brain keeps talking to itself and it gets on my nerves because it just won't stop. It's annoying, especially when I'm trying to sleep. Totally random, I know. I can't be the only one.

Watch this video to learn about Jessica and Sign Language, instead end up on the phone to my doctor to ask if I can be tested for POTS as I match everything she said and have had these odd symptoms for years with doctors saying it's anxiety, or ME, when nothing actually has matched 100% till now! Thank you, Jessica

Thanks again for bringing your voice to people with disabilities, including those of us with invisible disabilities. I know yours aren't always invisible, but teaching people that appearances can be deceiving, and to have more empathy for others (it's not hard, just believe people with disabilities, folks!), is really important! ❤️

Does Clara use signs when she talks with you? Does having a person do sign interpreting while making a video cost a lot of money? Is it difficult to coordinate? Do you find that some interpreters are better than others? What traits do you find most helpful with interpreters?
@ig-nat-ius1891
@ig-nat-ius1891 4 жыл бұрын
I'm obviously not Jessica but costs of interpreters are easily findable online. Usually they will be booked for a certain time and be paid by the hour. They can be costly to hire but they also don't typically make that much money. When Deaf folks travel it can be extremely difficult to find interpreters in the applicable languages. For example, if I can only communicate in ASL and if I am going to Australia, I might only find an Auslan interpreter. Folks with Hearing traveling companions who know English and ASL might opt to interpret for me but that can be limited. If there's a non signing language barrier that might require 2 or more translators/interpreters. Like Spanish to English to ASL. Many Deaf folks are multilingual so the interpretation may even be Spanish to LSM (in Mexico) to ASL, using a Deaf translator. That's a big tangent but I feel it's more worthwhile to post that info than delete it?

Interpreters are a limited resource and you generally need to book them an amount of time in advance. This means folks who need them do not have the same privilege of spontaneity. Many interpreters are better than others in skill as much as personality and vocabulary, but pretty much all of them have to be certified in their languages to do their job professionally.
@Jesswithlessstress

Great questions...to answer one. I believe she has mentioned in one of her videos that she has a somewhat regular interpreter that she will have help her. When she is not available Jessica will hire others as far in advance as possible. Even so, she has had many occasions where one is not available.

You also generally need to book multiple interpreters. Asking a single interpreter to sign for an 8 hour day would be extreme. They often have to work in a team, allowing their colleagues to rest as interpreting and signing places them under an extreme mental load.

Hiya! Sign language interpreters are very expensive indeed, and they book up well in advance so you have to plan it very well! I have two trusted interpreters who I prefer to work with, because they've been with me for years, so we have a great understanding of each other. Clara knows very basic signs which is useful when we are out and about, but I mainly lip-read. xx

yes, as far as i know most abled people think their thoughts as themselves speaking to themselves, i for an example can never clear my mind completely so my thoughts never stop talking, making it quite hard to fall asleep. i also know this is also pretty common

How interesting. I had this conversation with a friend recently, and I'm amused again that I thought it was much more common for people to see words spelled out (makes it devilishly hard to get puns, for sure) or in pictures, like I do. I do also "hear" my internal narrative as well, but it's not really my voice? Like right now, it's Jessica's, and tomorrow it might be whoever else I with a pleasant voice that I listened to for a long stretch, like the one time I watched a lot of QI and then had to read a technical manual and Stephen Fry was the one reading it to me in my head, but mostly it's just... another voice. And it's definitely secondary to the text words.
