I don't know about wall mart bikes but bearings on proper quality wheels are perfectly fine at 70mph. Some racers reach 75mph on steep downhills of Tour of Switzerland and brake like madmen before corners. I personally regularly hit 60mph on wheels with more than 10000 miles on them and regularly inspect my bearings. Sprints at the end of a flat race sometimes break 45mph. I don't know where you are getting your 35mph. Any datasheet from bearing manufacturers ?

And thus ends the saga of Jeremy the Jet. From being akwardly attacked to the bottom side of a Radio Flyer wagon and streaking across the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, to being boxed and sent together with a modified sled to challenge the threacherous snow and ice in the frigid Minnesota to reach The Angle, he now gives it all in the dry and scorching heat of Death Valley, California. He did his best, but sadly his best was not enough this time. Let us pay our respects the only way the internet knows how to. F. But this is not the end, for like a phoenix, one more shall rise from the ashes and continue the saga of jet powered vehicles. Let his name be Jerome the Jet, and may he propel faster and stronger than his predecessor!!!

Next time you might want to try putting some kind f nose cone or something on the bike. This will do a few things. It will make the bike more aerodynamic, saving fuel and also allowing it to go faster, and it will also somewhat protect you if for example a car kicks up a pebble, you suddenly aren't hit with a rock at 50Mph or something.

It would also help having two intakes for the jet on both sides outside of Wind Shadow. You can also mount metal netting on these intakes so you don’t need the intake shield directly in front of the jet.

That Walmart bike is sketchy for so many reasons. I could go on but in summery: Cheap wheels and tires increase rolling resistance. Cheap frame decreases rigidity and increases weight. Gears and derailleur can be clunky and not smooth. Brakes may not be super reliable in an emergency situation. And as many others have stated a full suspension setup could be good. (may not be super necessary tho, a good hard tail may be enough) Also don't be afraid to buy a good used bike as a starting point. You can get really good parts for cheaper than a new bike. Great video and keep it up!

You should get a turboshaft engine this time. Couple the output shaft to a bldc motor to act as a 3 phase generator, rectify that into dc, and suddenly you have a super light generator. Even the smallest rc turboshafts can output 5kw or so, so maybe it would be good as a ridiculously overkill hybrid? Or heck maybe just stick a prop on it and make a turboprop bike lol.
@davelowets
@davelowets Жыл бұрын
A bicycle with a propeller, yup, safe as hell... Also, using a turboshaft to run a generator, then converting it to D.C., then using the D.C. to drive a motor, to drive the wheel, would be an awful lot of conversions with a lot of loss at each one. I think he's way better off just using the thrust from the turbine directly.

You think it's easier on the earth to use fuel to drill for oil, use machines operated by more fuel to suck it out of the ground, use more fuel to transport it off the ocean by a ship, use more fuel to deliver it by a tanker truck to a refinery, use more fuel to convert it to diesel fuel in said refinery, use more fuel to deliver it to a gas station, use more fuel to have someone drive to the gas station to get it, use more fuel to drive it back home, then FINALLY use that fuel to BURN it in a turbine, than it is to use batteries?? Awesome project, I hope you can finish the ride. I've driven that stretch of road to teakettle junction and racetrack playa a few times and it's arguably one of the longest stretches of horribly washboard road I've ever done. It regularly tears up car suspensions and shakes parts loose. Every time I've done it there have been disabled cars abandoned along the route. At least in a car, good suspension and soft tires are the key, then you have to find the right speed to more or less 'float' over the corrugations. I've seen cars melt their shocks ( there's an Edmunds video on YT where they test a Honda pickup on the road and damage the suspensions of both pickups they bring, including their TRD chase truck). Overbuild all the mount points and expect to break stuff. Dual, long travel suspension and wide, soft tires are best, a long with a comfy seat and a shock-absorbing seatpost and bar mount. If you were sore before getting to that road, it'll get so much worse. Alternatively, start farther south to get your 100 miles without that road. Good luck!

Being a steam guy and thus only familiar with steam turbines I have heard that jolts and bumps are incredibly hard on the bearings in the turbine (thus the reson the majestic steam turbine locomotive was a failure). Although this may be different for those infernal combustion turbines it couldn't hurt to put a shock absorbing device on the turbine mounts in an attempt to reduce ware.

Maybe have the jerrycans be attached lower to the ground to reduce the high center of gravity.

I ride that aria all the time and have done it on crappy wall mart bikes as well as the expensive rentals from furnace creek. When you work there you can ride them for free so I used to indulge a bit. Tip on the rangers ride at night if you're riding something crazy , there is no one around at all you can ride down the middle of the road if you want. As long as it isn't new years or something were the rangers are prowling around looking to make DUI busts. About any normal night though it's like after an apocalypse or something you'll be the only one down there.

I’m from central Alberta where the temps rarely get to the 90’s. But even I know better than to set out at 9 am on what’s going to be a hot day. Get yer butts out of bed and beat the heat at daybreak, you get two or three hours of cooler temps.
