Foreigners try Malaysian food! This time, our Malaysian food tour was joined by ‪@KenAbroad‬. (You can check his video here: • KUIH FEAST (Trying ton... ) We tried Malaysian kuih at Pasar Siti Khadijah Market in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia.
We tried to find as many Malaysian traditional kuih or treats and delicacy such as kuih jala mas, kuih akok, kuih puteri mandi, kuih badak berendam, kuih cek mek molek, kuih tahi itik, kuih pulut bakar, kuih lompat tikam, kuih bah nangka, and more!! BUT the market was so overwhelming and busy that we couldn't pick all the kuih that were recommended by you guys. Anyway check out our video for our Malaysian food reaction. We can say that Malaysian kuih is one of the must try food in Malaysia!

Some tips when eating Malaysian treat/kuih especially the sticky and mushy types are you should eat it with a hot drinks instead of cold ones because cold drinks will harden the kuih texture when you drink when kuih in your mouth but it will melted with hot drink and make it easy to swallow...most of the kuih are intended to be eating during in the morning or evening because people need to do heavy-duty job such as farming ,so sugar and starchy type of kuih are common in Malaysia so people stomach can last full until lunch or dinner *Less sugar hot tea(teh o panas kurang manis) are the best drink to combine with kuih actually or hot teh tarik(pulling tea)
@ForkMeeNoodle
@ForkMeeNoodle 3 жыл бұрын
The cassava usually people eat it with shaved coconut or deep it with sugar and drink with hot tea or hot coffee(hot drink will help a lot), it was a staple food during japanese invasion where rice are hard to come by in that time so cassava are planted in every household because it was easy to harvest and no need care at all, it's like how potato works in medieval time on the west, you can cooked it in different way or you just can eat plain after boiled it or make it as any dish like cake because it rich in nutrient and carbohydrate plus it fulfilling too.

Ivana correct again with her observation and taste. (A cook/chef mind is amazing). 👍😃 The first Kuih, Apam Beras is steamed to make it and the white there is coconut flesh shaving. The Kuih (Lepat/Bingka Ubi) Steve & Ken said have fish flavour, have none, it is made from Tapioca as Ivana said. Try more Kuih. There are many more to sample. 😋👍😃

Most of the Kuih you guys tried are common kuih that can easily found elsewhere in Malaysia, with exception to Akok, as it’s originally from Kelantan. To taste authentic Kelantan Kuih, try Jala Emas and Puding Raja. Let’s see if you handle the sweetness. In Kelantan & Terengganu, Friday and Saturday is the weekend so expect crowds in local market as they going about replenishing stocks at home. The final kuih (yellow ones) you guys at is fermented tapioca. Some parts of malaysia take the fermented tapioca and deep fried them with batters. Really awesome having it hot.

1. It is illegal here in Malaysia to hijak the prices especially when they already in display. 2. It is haram for muslims to increase the price just someone is a tourist or super rich driving a ferrari. It is okay tho to give discount or free meal as they are considered as charity. That is why you won't see people selling and asking more money especially to tourists. Veggies on Tour said the same thing you said too. They went to eat at a restaurant and thought they had to pay extra. To their surprise, they did not have to pay more at all.

Intriguing reactions to the kuih! Normally most people would just say nice, sweet, salty, sour, pungent or bad, but you are actually savoring, analyzing and experimenting all the flavors in the little snacks for breakfast. 👍 Didn’t know the kuih is so cheap in Kelantan. It is usually RM0.90 a piece elsewhere. And there, it is homemade and usually by the women. Aren’t you having too much kuih in a morning? But despite that, a well earned credit must be given to you for the amazing analysis of the local cakes or snacks of Kelantan/Malaysia.

the first one you ate is called Apam Beras and it's made of cooked rice blend together with rice flour and plain flour, 2ndly you ate the malaysian donut just a simple donut kampung, 3rd is the Apam Pisang and of course is made of banana, then the extra green one is called Puteri Ayu made of plain flour and some other stuff (it's texture is apam like) topped with fresh coconut ..and for your info all the kuih called apam is steamed. moving on, the one you ate that wrapped in banana leaf is called Lepat Ubi (ubi kayu is tapioca/cassava, it's grated and then they squeeze all the juice from it, the stuff that left is stir into melted gula melaka and then they wrap into the banana leaf and steamed). then the green red and yellow thingy you ate is called Kuih Peria ( glutinous rice flour filled with red bean paste n then steamed). then you ate the stuffed donut (it's filled with red bean paste, sorry i don't remember the name for that one..haha) and lastly is called Tapai Ubi (again its tapioca/cassava that is fermented so basically it's fermented tapioca/cassava)..then the bonus part is called Jering Kukus or steamed jering, is eaten with shredded young coconut. actually i don't eat jering because it's gonna stain your urine. when you pee, your pee will stink.hahaha

When it comes to food, not too worry. The vendors won't overcharged whether you are local or tourist because food is a blessing. For retails items such as T-shirt, electrical goods and so on, they won't overcharged, but you will not get the best bargain price. It goes the same for local people like me who just don't know how to bargain either. - My favourite kueh are Kueh Talam, karipap pusing (spiral curry puffs) and pulut panggang.

Yeah! You guys tried the “jering rebus”. It’s very healthy, minus the sugar infused shredded coconut. Though most of the kueh you guys had are typical Malay kueh, except the “akok” which is a Kelantan staple. Next try out the “tepung telur” stuff, mostly the yellow type ... jala mas, buah tanjung, nekbat, taihi itik (this one is egg white). Enjoy your stay in Kelantan guys

The last one is fermented tapioca. Can eat it like that. Also can fry like goreng pisang or make thick coconut milk source like bubur..better. Its got alcohol in very low percentage that cant make you drunk or something even you eat lots of them huhu. Its complicated need to read paper prepare by scholar to understand whole detail about alcohol in Islam. that s why muslim can eat it. Just like tapai pulut (fermented glutenous rice) during hari raya, Same process.

Good job sampling those kuehs. Out of the bunch of kuehs, i only like akok & tapai ubi (fritter version is da bomb!). Cant go wrong with pasar khadijah. Perhaps, if you have time, have a part deux of sampling traditional kelantan kuehs (some followers have suggested a list eg lompat tikam, tepong pelita etc). If u dont know how they look like, no prob, just tell/read out to the sellers what you want. Oh i challenge you guys to eat ETOK lol. Cant get any kelantenese than this.

1) Apam Beras - steamed rice flour mixed using either tapai nasi(fermented rice) or yeast. but from the way Saiful said it taste acidic/sour, i think it is made traditional way using tapai which is much better. And taste good with shredded coconut. 2) Normal Donut 3) Banana Cake/Muffin 4) Puteri Ayu - steamed sponged rice flour with shredded coconut toppings 5) Steamed tapioca with palm sugar - not sure what its name, looks like Lepat Ubi but normally lepat ubi is fully covered/wrapped in banana leaves 6) Looks like kuih koci but without banana leaves wrapping. Kuih Koci is a steamed sticky rice flour and filled with fried palm sugar with coconut or red bean paste and wrapped with banana leaves. I read others say its called Kuih Peria 7) Pau Goreng - fried pau with red bean filling 8) Tapai Ubi - fermented cassava/tapioca What!!! you eat jering just like that with shredded coconut. Never seen people do that. hahahaha..... Jering(Malay), Jengkol(Indonesia), Dog Fruit(English) scientific named Archidendron pauciflorum. In Malaysia normally we eat as ulam/salad or vegies and dip with tempoyak/budu/sambal belacan. A young and fesh jering is much crunchy and better to be ulam or fresh salad. The one you had is the old jering which is quite hard to chew and also the smell is quite strong. For old jering normally we cut in small slices makes it easier to bite and cooked. There is another type of jering called jering tanam or jering cambah. Jering Cambah is the old jering to be put in soil just like you want to plant it for a week or two. It taste much crazier and smell more powerful. If you go to wet market and saw opened jering with the inside skin color yellowish turned black and some already has some root; that is the one. if you urine, the whole house can smell it, much powerful than petai which your urine will smell in the toilet for a moment. There is also another type of smelly bean called kerdas smaller than jering and taste quite the same. But this jering, kerdas and petai is good for health, can help lowering sugar level in the blood.
