Foreigners try Malaysian Food in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, Malaysia! Including ayam percik (bbq chicken with gravy), laksam (fish based soup noodles - similar to laksa), nasi kerabu (blue rice with fresh ulam or vegetables), and sup daging (beef soup)!
We started at Siti Khadijah Market to try laksam for breakfast. Unfortunately Steve wasn't too into the fish base, so he explored and found some sup daging. We really love trying new Malaysian foods and making a Malaysian food vlog!
We were planning to g to Yati Ayam Percik restaurant to continue our Malaysian Food tour in Kelantan. But we met with the Tourism Board of Malaysia, and one of their guide (Semutar Guide) brought us to Singgora Guesthouse! This kampung style guesthouse is extremely picturesque! Check out our drone shots in Kelantan. We tried ayam percik, smoky kampung beef, ikan celup tepung, pickled garlic, nasi kerabu, budu and a lot more! Very delicious, and homecooked Malaysian food! Definitely a must-eat.
The owner even hooked up Steve with a semutar! A tourist feeling more like a local everyday!

Hi Steve /Ivana. The blue flower made to color rice in nasi Kerabu has a name. It was mentioned in Gordon Ramsey's (the international chef) many trips to Malaysia. If you not seen it, better see it for yourself. The name of the flower is mentioned in the middle of the video. If you have not seen it, see for yourself. If you wonder why ayam kampung (village/rural chicken) has tougher meat, it is because rural chicken roaming around at free will. Unlike poultry chicken they are more like institutionalised chicken. Living and growing all their life in specialized compound, sometimes never see the outside world. So poultry chicken is not moving around so much. Just eat, sleep and keep growing indoor. Rural chickens are more adventurous, facing and fighting back predators ( so true, I was lucky to saw one event years back. A cock fending off a snake to protect the flock. And winning!) And they are smarter. So their muscles are firm and solid. That is why rural chicken has tougher meat. More healthy to eat. As for frog fruit, different state or ethnic has different name for it. As for Selangor based, primarily Javanese ethnic origins, my folks call them Nam-Nam fruit. Loved by the kids at my village.

In Malaysia, if the laksa broth is not thick, then no Malaysian will buy it. Laksa broth in Malaysia comes in few variances, according to the places it is served. Laksa broth in the north doesn't have curry paste in it and it is more like soup. Laksa broth in Johor is creamy and added with curry paste. Laksa broth on the east coast states is creamy and doesn't have curry powder. That's why the colour is white or murky. Laksa in Sarawak has a very distinct feature and 🍤 taste. Laksa and laksam are actually noodles made from rice flour.

Rose laksam is my Favorite place. The lady serving you are the owner. She also sells the laksa. Should asked her what are condiments (unless you had asked.) It was cucumber jullien cuts not young mango. For spicier add the chillies & belacan mixed in the bowl infront Ivana. Mark Wein ate there in his last visit.

Nice of you guys going back to Pasar Siti Khadijah top floor to try the local dishes sold there as I suggested. 👍😋 Ivana observation is correct. Laksam broth is thicker and creamier cause there is Santan (coconut milk) in it. That’s the main ingredient that makes it different from Laksa broth. It’s ok if you are not into it, Steve. I am not into it also but I like Laksa. Nice eating outing. 👍👍😋😋🤤🤤😃
@JetLagWarriors
@JetLagWarriors 3 жыл бұрын
But laksa also has coconut milk in it, right?
@saifulrizan8067
@saifulrizan8067 3 жыл бұрын
No. Both have fish but only Laksam broth have coconut milk in it. As the old lady said the top broth pot have Santan (this is the broth she put in your Laksam plate) and the young lady said Laksa Penang , Laksa Lemak (to differentiate between the two broths) which means Laksa Penang broth is used for the normal Laksa and Laksa Lemak broth (Lemak=fat/creamy) is used for Laksam. There is also a third type of Laksa which is called Laksa Lemak which basically used the normal Laksa noodle but with the Laksam broth. So Laksa Lemak broth is used for both Laksa Lemak dish and Laksam dish.

Ayam kampung = free range chicken that eats whatever food it finds and always full mature adult chickens (4-6 months). That's why the meat is a lot tougher than modern husbandry chickens (45 to 60 days)

Steve, another method of our way eating sour mango is by dipping it in sugar + soy sauce mixture. that could be the trick for you to eat since you are not into rojak sauce. Just take sugar, put soy sauce just enough to make the sugar granule turn black, then mixed it. Then take the mango and scrub the mixture onto the mango and eat.

Laksa and laksam both have fish base sauce on them so will be amazed if Steve actually love it. Singgora is a really exclusive guest stay for you to enjoy kampung scenery and atmosphere. It’s actually quite hard to have Ayam Kampung in the city as this type of chicken is grown without additional food to increase the meat volume. My favourite combination of nasi kerabu is having it with grill beef, pickled garlic, solok lada, fish cracker, and fried fish in batter. Don’t forget to have breakfast at pok mat pulau pisang and have their honey teh tarik.

I agree with you about the sugar in the drink, in Malaysia most people put sugar in the drink by default, you gotta remind them several times about no sugar or less sugar in your drink and it's best to remind them when they are in the process of preparing the drink 😀😀

Great to see you guys enjoying Malaysia & your videos re-awakened the local tourism scenes of Malaysia which we tend to forget as many Malaysians are vacationing overseas before the Covid-19 pandemic came by.
