Today we welcome Dr. Jim Fadiman. Jim is a psychologist, writer, and lecturer who has been pioneering psychedelic research since the 1960s. He is recognized as “America’s wisest and most respected authority on psychedelics and their use.” Jim received his bachelor and doctorate degrees from Harvard and Stanford respectively. Apart from psychedelics, he has also been involved in researching healthy multiplicity for over 20 years. His newest book with Jordan Gruber is called Your Symphony of Selves: Discover and Understand More of Who We Are.
In this episode, I talk to Dr. Jim Fadiman about multiple selves. The DSM says that having multiple personalities is a disorder, but Dr. Fadiman challenges this notion. In fact, he believes that the opposite is true: the multiplicity of selves is both normal and healthy. It’s not about having one “super self”, but unifying the different parts of who we are. We also discuss psychedelics, its effects on mental health, and how Abraham Maslow would have viewed these mind-altering substances.

Haven’t watched this whole interview yet but I wonder if Fadiman and Dr. Dick Schwarz have discussed Internal Family Systems?

We talk to ourselves until we don't. Now, I see that this is an issue. I have become very contradictory in the last several years... No, contradictory in a different set of rules. I was artistic, and enjoyed and produced art. Now I'm productive but do not produce art but I produce a modest living. Sounds weird but/and it is weird. I try to do a thing then something stops me with an obstacle I can not move. So I try another thing and it happens again. I have a long list of projects blocked by one or several of myself's, I need to change that some way.

Have you tried „talking” to these parts of yourself and asking them why do this to your projects? There’s a good chance that they just want to protect you (to the best of their knowledge). Sometimes those parts don’t have direct access to the overview of the effects their intentions have over your life in general. I found that „talking” with my selves helped me understand the deeper reasons for my self-sabotage and influence it in a positive way.
