He's like seething at points and betrays his psychology with the theater count and concerns of being "upstaged."
@numskul

@@illnickdotcom seemed more like he was responding glibly to the question. And the upstaging comment seemed like inside joke with the actress, hence the wink at the camera. I got the impression that Chevy was talking down to Jim the entire time, including the question about the seats, which comes off like a real insider prick brag only someone in-the-business would make. The whole interview seemed like an attempt to make Jim seem out of place or like he didn’t belong. The crack about “kids love ya”… repeatedly calling him a hillbilly with that stank on it. Jim was able to judo roll all of it. Water off a duck’s ass. Maybe you’ve never had an entitled slob with connections and status talk down about your humble roots, but we know it when we hear it.

This is pretty rough to watch. I get the feeling that Chase did not prepare for this interview at all. He calls the Beverly Hillbillies the Clampet's. He then takes various shots at Varney, intended or not. To his credit Jim Varney played along and ignored them. Chase has some pretty funny movies but he is pretty awful and disrespectful

Chevy comes off as condescending toward a man who is equally talented, and very likely more humerous. I've laughed at Chevy time and time again, but he has been swallowed up by history. Jim Varney is timeless, and even if Jim had grown tired of repeated typcasting as a result of Ernest, Ernest and his associated skit characters are brilliant and endure the test of time, similar to the Three Stooges.

Don't agree on this one. Chevy was just really stiff outside the boundaries of scripted comedy, and his interactions with live humans illustrated that. The sad irony is that some of his best comedic moments were total improvisations - unscripted, but executed within the confines of parameters the writers (which he sometimes was) laid out for him. Love Chevy, heard he's a prick, but he's also a national treasure, and to see him pseudo-pander to Jim Varney was cringeworthy. Jim was a rare dude. How about that dulcimer playing? Who the hell knows how to play dulcimer these days other than maybe Jeff Mangum?

I don't think Chevy is being condescending, I think he is more frustrated with trying to perform in the talk show medium so is coming off uncomfortable. Needless to say, his show didn't last long.

I do agree that Chase sucked as an interviewer, but "swallowed up by history" is a bit harsh. Vacation, Christmas Vacation, Caddyshack and Fletch are still talked about, about as much as Ernest films are. I do agree that Ernest P. Worrell is clearly more timeless than Chase's characters though.

I can’t tell if Chevy is serious or not, but it’s kind of hilarious how he keeps insulting Jim at every turn. You HAVE to believe Chevy really respected Jim for the body of work he had created at that point, so this has to be all in good fun, but some of his barbs hit a little close to home! Geez! Haha. I feel like I’m watching an episode of The Office, cause this was pretty awkward. But I can’t stop laughing! I sure hope Jim knew how beloved he was. Even as a kid, I recognized his voice in Toy Story. Loved the guy.
